Dancers.... that got me thinking she may have been a dancer at a gentleman's club.
Wouldn't she shave her armpits though too? I just find the shaving/lack of shaving so strange.

that's why I think she was a sex worker, or the killer did it.

Agreed. Or, as someone mentioned above, maybe she had maintained her pubic area for her partner--so it would make sense she wouldn't shave her underarms, but it seems she would shave her legs, too, if that was the case. Hard to say.

Since it was first mentioned that there is possibility that she might be Brazilian, I have contacted my Brazilian friends for advice and searching through their national missing websites since. It would be great if more people had a look too.

http://www.desaparecidosdobrasil.org/Home/desaparecidos---c (database of missing adults in Brazil)

I have also researched missing from Poços de Caldas, city of 140,000 in the mountains of southeastern Brazil, state Minas Gerais, from where majority Brazilians in Mount Vernon came from with thought that our JD could be new arrival from there.

Unfortunately for such a high populated country with extreme crime rates and violence many missing are just not listed.
Of course there is no certainty there she really is Brazilian...

I have also looked into crimes in the area with similar MO and possible perps but about that at different time.

Shaving - as per her Namus (https://identifyus.org/en/cases/10229) she had Brazilian wax done. I might see guy shaving woman on occasion (whatever), but waxing? Absolutely No, too messy and complicated. Also, waxing is done mainly because hair start to grow back only after one or two month. While shaving legs and armpits, well that's job for every 2-3 days. The point is she could be well groomed all over just a few days or a week prior to her demise.

She might have done waxing at the same time when having fake nails done...

That is true and totally makes sense.

(About the waxing v. Shaving the pits ).

If it was a Brazilian wax, why did they say "shaved"????

I think it was just a wording of whoever made Namus profile. Rather than stating recent waxing, to be better understood it is stated as shaving and at the end statement of Brazilian wax. I do not think it would be added there if it was not the case. Of course it is just my assumption.

Body hair - recent shaving of pubic hair/Brazilian wax. Unshaven arm pits.

Namus says "recent shaving of pubic hair/Brazilian wax. Unshaven arm pits." A dancer would probably shave their armpits.. In one thread I think it's the unidentfied woman from Longview TX, there's a poster who was a dancer about this time maybe I will message her and ask her to come read this thread (need to remember where she posted). There's really so little info on this case, yeah sure she could have been a dancer, streetwalker etc. I definately agree with Jess that he knew the area and felt comfortable spending time posing a body in a street he knew would be quiet at that particular time and the very fact that he was that comfortable at all just screams multiple murderer at you. Obviously when you frequent sites such as this it's inevitable that you will find some disturbing content but this case just disturbs me alot more than most.

Maybe we should go back and list the facts:

Young, pretty girl -
good teeth - prolly means a reasonable stable upbringing in most people's eyes, although if that's the case how come nobody misses her?
Brocolli? Maybe she was healthy living, she seemed in decent physical shape.
Drugs? Did she take them herself? Like we discussed cocaine was readily available but expensive during this time period.
Fake nails.
6 hour post mortem time which means she was posted early morning sometime more than likely?

We got stuff to go on.

Far-fetched, but maybe she had a rhinoplasty performed?

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/m/merritt_launa.html

Very far-fetched. Launa could have lost some weight and grew a few inches over 5 years.

Charley Project indicates she had gotten into trouble for prostitution. She disappeared the day before she was scheduled for a court appearance involving this.

Just an update, News 12 Westchester (NY) told me today that if I don't hear back from them within a week, to reach out again re: MVJD. Hopefully they can help re-air this story... going on 28 years this Feb. our JD is still unidentified :(

The cocaine - it was expensive back then, but 1988 was also during the crack epidemic in NYC and the surrounding urban areas - I don't know enough about toxicology screens to know if cocaine would pop differently from crack in a test, since they are two forms of the same drug.

Teeth - she might have been a chronic runaway or wild child, and the parents gave up looking - look at the Grateful Doe/Jason Callahan case (so happy this was solved!!) - mother did not report him missing for 20 years.

Broccoli - this combined with the cocaine is screaming stripper/dancer to me - I know a woman who basically fits everything you've listed here and she has spent the majority of her life dancing in topless clubs in the city. Good teeth, always on a diet, cocaine use.

Crack and cocaine show up the same in a urine sample, so I imagine that they would show up the same in a blood sample as well. (I see a lot of drug tests at work and it shows up as COC in urine, and I'm not about to ask which one they do.)

They probably assumed from her teeth that she was a cocaine user and not a crack user. Crack is smoked while cocaine is snorted, and the crack can be very erosive and damaging to the teeth. Cocaine will begin to cause damage to the walls of the nostrils instead.

Thanks for the info, Catherine! You're probably right that she was snorting cocaine. I know crack can damage teeth, but I assumed it would take awhile if you're a fairly new user. I also have serious doubts that she was from this area and I don't know if crack was a thing in other states in the mid 80s.
