Family of missing New York woman asks Shania Twain for help

Learned from the foxnews article in the above that there was no cellphone service at her camper. Wonder if her camper showed any signs of burglary.... though appears she was more the target. Being so rural, getting others to search for her might be difficult.

It gives me hope to see a picture of a large crowd of people looking for Rachael.

Candlelight vigil for Rachael Mattice

WELLS, NY--One look at the massive outpouring of people dressed in her favorite color and there's no question - the hope for the safe return of Rachael Mattice still burns bright.

"This vigil is to keep family up and keep them positive. We're praying, and we don't pray, we're not the praying type, but we're doing our best," said Rachael's aunt Tracey Collins.

great comments as always !!!! OK --city girl in me is thinking--------what type of "camp"----is it hunting or fishing ? I am thinking of what amenities there are and also--what would be of value to take--is there a TV, microwave etc. Very possible someone/ones were squatting there. She would have seen that tho, a light on and probably heard noise. She would then, to my thinking, have texted or called her folks to tell them what was going on. Noise travels at night--is it possible a neighbor heard something, anything unusual or are neighbors too far away? I am leaning toward abduction. She had just become a home health aide? Is that what I read on her FB? Maybe that is where we need to start---who she met at school, who her employer is, etc.
She looks like a really lovely girl---am sending a lot of prayers--angels around this beautiful girl--Keep her safe and bring her home to her family.

Thank you for the welcome.
I used to live off of route 29 in Fulton county and I can say at this time of the year we would see an influx of drifters up and down 29. As for the winter there was constant reports of break ins at seasonal camps. So yes it would be very easy and does occur. We would know when the weather was getting better because we would see the same people walking towards town. It used to make me wonder where they stayed all winter. They never caused us a problem and they were never thumbing for a ride, just kind of like they were out for a long hike. I always thought of the famous Adirondack hermit http://noahjohnrondeau. Most inhabitants in this area are very resourceful, even if you live in one of the bigger towns.
The winter weather can make life even more miserable and difficult as its not unusual to get lake effect snow for four days after a nor'easter just dumped a few feet on you. And it's worse up in Hamilton county. There is only about 4000 full time residents in that county. A snow machine is a must! And they can be hard to afford.
The area took a huge hit during the recession, businesses left, people their homes, changing laws in the years following made huge local employers leave the state, Beech Nut moved and had a mix up and local money was lost from there. My husband and I used to drive to Albany or further every day to be able to pay our high school and property taxes, bills and mortgage. But we could afford to. Most out there do not make the hourly wage or salary to cover the sometimes over $5 a gallon gas to get to work. And I am talking about Fulton and Montgomery counties. Hamilton county has even less work, is further from the more job rich areas and has less resources.
This situation really scares me and I'm trying to think positively about what could have happened. There are a lot of bears in the area. Under normal conditions they are nothing to worry about, just observe from a distance, keep trash and food locked up, don't leave bird food out in good weather months. Maybe she came home and spooked one, which in turn spooked herself and in the dark ran into the woods. Maybe she is outside the search grid with a leg injury, but surviving. It has happened. I was hiking a couple years ago in the area near Dexter Lake and a helicopter was flying just above the tree line, turned around and flew back over me and I wondered if they were looking for somebody. I couldn't really see them through the tree tops but I figured they were using infrared so I waved. That night I checked the news and sure enough we had a missing elderly camper. They found him ALIVE 8 days after he went missing. He was outside the search area, with a leg injury. http://http://www.uticaod.com/article/20140717/news/140719572 So it is possible. And if it truly was 9:30pm on 06/22/16 that she went missing as opposed to 7:30am 06/23 (just an example), it would have been dark and easier to scare. I don't care how well you know an area, how long you've lived there, how unshakable you are, dark woods can scare anybody in the right circumstance. This is just my very wishful brainstorming.
Sorry for being long winded. No matter where I live in the world this will always be home to me. I wish I was there right now.

A lot of people that live in the more populous areas of New York have "camps" in the Adirondacks. A camp is for everything from family functions, fishing, hunting, on a lake, in the woods, on top of a mountain. They could range from a piece of land to pitch a tent on all the way to a great camp with many buildings. I had a camp on Sacandaga Lake growing up, our neighbors were from Manhattan and they came up every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Seasonal homes mostly. Some very rustic and some all glass and modern.

I live in Albany County (not downtown but in the suburbs) so I don't get up that way too frequently. We have good friends/family that live in Johnstown/Gloversville so we do head west at least once a month. I have traveled as far as Wells and even Speculator, but did not stay long. We've camped in Galway and we've taken several fall foliage tours through the Adirondacks. Even though I can't say I know Wells very well I can say I know what type of place it is. To the person that asked if there are cameras -- I doubt it. In recent articles it says Rachael's family camp is a "camper" so it's probably an RV as opposed to a seasonal house type thing.

I don't get a good feeling about this case and I feel terrible saying that because, even though I don't know Rachael, I know people who know her. After you've been on WS for a while I feel like you can kind of tell which direction a case is headed. I hope I'm wrong. It's good to see you posting liona. I'm glad you chimed in with your local insight to help others kind of get a lay of the land.

I'm also confused as to why her camper door would have been left open. Could she have been forced in and then carried out? :( I feel like there will be physical evidence in this case.. tire tracks, foot prints, finger prints... things of that nature. I'm confident LE has already gathered what they can. I'm glad to hear they began an air search for her.

Hopefully today brings answers.

ETA: I can also confirm there is very little/no self phone service in these parts. We were driving up there looking for fall foliage this past fall and got lost because the GPS on my phone stopped working. We had to drive quite a ways before I could get enough bars to find our way out.

So do we have a map of her property? Can she see her camper from bottom of hill? Would she know if another car was up there? Or would someone have to hide their vehicle off property and sneak up to the house to lie in wait. But then how did they take her away? Walk her back to their car? Why not take hers?

Also, they are saying she stopped in downtown Wells before heading to camp. For what? Cigarettes, milk? To visit a friend? Who was it that saw her? I would start right there. So many different scenarios running through my brain. I'm mad because she called her mom to say she made it home. It's not fair. She seems like such a fearless young lady to be staying In the woods alone. Did she have a boyfriend? Also if the intent was to assault and murder her, why not do it there and leave her? It was heavily secluded. Could someone have wanted to abduct and keep her alive?

Gah. This is so frightening. I can't stop feeling sad when I see her elf like twinkling eyes in her pix. I keep hugging my 20 year old daughter who also thinks nothing could ever happen to her.

Something to do while thinking about this case. I saw the address of the Wells property on the previous page and wanted to imagine what it'd be like around where Rachael went missing. It looks so secluded! Anyways, I found a nice looking camp for sale nearby.

Trying to google where her campsite is...

It seems to be the Mattice property at 172 Hernandez road. When I map it it just shows very dense woods. I don't even see road access to property. Must be a dirt tract. She was so brave to stay there alone.

Property records indicate this us the family property that they are searching today. I've never posted a map before so apologies if I've done it wrong. On Tapatalk. Looks like deep woods. Is it where she was staying? I dunno. But this is where they were meeting to search. Off to work soon. Hope she is found, unhurt...
Just bringing this forward.

Thank you for this link! Updates are posted there. Not sure if I am allowed to post them here. (considered rumor?) but there was a couple of things that seemed new to me, about dogs and an unauthorized G F M site.

As an aside, I've noticed the street that the camp home was on spelled three differing ways! On map sites like google maps, it's "Hermandez" (with an m), a camera shot of the actual street sign on a video of the candlelight vigil it read "Hernendez", and on real estate sites, "Hernandez".........Hermandez, Hernendez, Hernandez! Which is it?! Gosh.

Strange the K9's could not track her.... is it possible she never made it back to her campsite? Taken someplace prior and car then driven back and left at her campsite as a ruse? Okay, far fetched, but why no scent for the dogs (Wonder how many dogs were used?)....

I just noticed from some of the real estate sites (trulio, etc.) that the lot size is 101 acres...hard to tell where the home is in that much acreage. So many trees! I wish there was a satellite image from the fall when it might be easier to see where the driveway and house are. It looks like there are some homes on Black Bridge Road which may also abut the property on the west side. ... Don't know how relevant any of this is though, it seems likely she's not there.

Rachael has an amazing support system. Looking at the pictures from the vigil you can see how loved she is. Her family and friends really are pulling through to get this out there. This is large area but very small town. What I mean by that is a lot of people know a lot of people. Spread out between the 3 counties of Fulton/Montgomery/Hamilton. I'm not very social but my husband was born and raised here also and his family and friends span across the area too.
That being said because there isn't a lot of work in the area I wonder if there was some jealousy about the new job Rachael got. Maybe there was some competition for the position by an acquaintance that was jealous of Rachael's entire situation, loving, tight family and friends, great new job in a desperate area. Maybe this was the final straw for a distant aquintance. This is all just speculation but could the missing item be a gun? Because even though I hike the woods alone, I always carry. Even when I was Rachael's age. Especially if I was living in the woods alone. As I did.

From this link:

So, if you run a motel about a 200 hundred miles from where Rachael was last seen, please keep your eyes open for Rachael and if you remember seeing her in the past few days, maybe with someone else, please let the police know.

That seems awfully specific. New York City is approx. (give or take a couple depending on route) 200 miles from Wells. Where is this person getting their information? I have not read anything alluding to a hotel in the main stream media as of yet. If this is just rumor I wish they'd acknowledge it as such.

I took it to mean that that even if your 200 miles away keep an eye out. If someone strange is staying at your motel, etc. I could be wrong, maybe they have someone in mind and this is a hint?
