Found Alive NY - Rachael Mattice, 24, Wells, 22 June 2016

Good thought on the key ring! Just guessing they were on two different key chains. Maybe her parents just gave her the key to the camp trailer so she hadn't put it on the same ring as her car keys yet. Dashing in to get something or put something away (like groceries), is all I can think of. If Rachael's mom is anything like mine, when I was young and visited my parents they always packed me a care package, including leftovers, to take when I left. Maybe she dashed in to put the food in the fridge?

Dashing in with some groceries or a care package makes sense. Are those items missing? I think she had the key to the camp because she had been living there for about a month her friend said. I guess she could have had a way to unclasp certain keys from her key ring...hmm...maybe they always hid the key or I wonder if the camp key was missing.

I would think if someone grabbed her before she actually got into the camp, then whatever she was holding would have fallen to the ground. Maybe she actually was the one to open the door without anything looking suspicious, and someone was waiting inside.

I have to keep reminding myself that the sheriff says everything looked ordinary. Am I the only one that is having trouble believing that?

At first, her mother thought maybe someone she was acquainted with took her, and in that case there'd be no need for LE to warn the community, and be keeping it quiet while they work on it. Bet they checked out who attended the vigil looking for odd behavior.

This is an insomnia post. Hope some of it makes sense.

I keep thinking about the car door and the car in the on position. Each idea I come up with is shot down while thinking about it.

I thought maybe she was unloading groceries and left the car running until she came back out. But I would think a young person with limited funds and such a long drive back and forth to town would want to conserve gas.

Then I thought maybe she was grabbed as she was getting out of the car but before even getting ready to get out you would turn your car off.

Nothing makes sense unless she was sitting in the car with somebody and he attacked her and carried her off without turning off the engine. That doesn't even make any sense does it?

A person pulls up, turns off their car then goes about their business. Unless they pull up and are going to run into the camper to get something and run right back out to go someplace else and gets held up between the car and camper.

But who the heck would she be visiting in the middle of nowhere? I'm hoping they have taken a really good look at all of her neighbors.

That makes the most sense to me. Runs home to grab something, leaves the car running and everything in the car since she will only be gone a minute.

Hummm that one sounds like the best. But how come the dogs didn't pick up anything???
The two open doors situation has had my brain hurting also. Could she have pulled up, and someone she knows came out the front door of camper, shes sits in the front of her surprised, or pissed? That person approached car and then...what? It still feels wrong.

Earlier I went with the grocery scenario too.

Actually, we don't even know if anything happened that night. I don't have a reason to assume that something happened to her that night until cops say her camp wasn't slept in. but could be hard to tell if she's messy.

Could be the next morning she went outside to warm up her car, and went back in the house for something and was interrupted.

Or was she leaving in the morning, realised she forgot something or turn something off and ran back into the house when boom whoever grabbed her did it then?

Or, did she have a romantic encounter that night that went bad? (Least plausible theory for me).

We need some hard points to build a theory around, and all of our information is flimsy at best.

She has some family in Wells, maybe even cousins or friends her age. It was only 9:15 p.m.

Go out for drinks and music? Visit a friend?

Maybe she just needed to get something from the camp and carry stuff in, her hands were full, so she left the car running with her purse and phone inside the car. (hmm...wait...separate key to open the camp door or is it on the car key ring left in the car?)

Also, no one has said they had plans with her, but it seems people who have talked to LE have been asked, as I saw mentioned on social media, to not share all the details.

Don't know much about the dog search, but I take it they didn't track her hiking off onto any trail? I don't know why the dogs wouldn't hit on anything, but her scent is all over that area from living there. Would dogs pick up on her scent if she was placed in a vehicle right away and driven off? The neighbor only noticed her car, but maybe they missed seeing everything.

This is a hard to figure out. Where is Rachael?

A thought just came to me when I tried to think about leaving my keys in the car while I went in the house. If they were on separate key rings I would leave the keys in the ignition if someone else was in the car. Like just let me drop this off (or pick this up) and then we can go.

There's also a chance the camp door wasn't locked at all times.

Is it possible that there is a wild animal involved somehow? She lives seconds away from the river. Maybe she was chased.

I am apologizing in advance as I'm certain this won't be well received but last night while searching along those lines (a wild animal) I stumbled upon this:

Again :sorry: everyone...but no stone unturned. :blushing:

On a more serious and less offensive note in hopes of finding a lovely missing girl, here are the wildlife that frequent the area. If it was dusk or even night when she exited her car coyotes, wolves, bear and moose could all be lurking about. I'm assuming that if she was chased and caught, there would be some evidence. However, if they weren't looking for it, or she was dragged away, this might appear as "normal" markings for the area. Just a thought, albeit unlikely.

Not sure because I am reading that camper was way into the woods. I'm thinking maybe visiting somebody closer say a mile away?

I just don't see her coming way up to that secluded place then turning around and going out again.

I have to believe her family, friends and LE know much more. Things they don't want told and maybe even have an idea what happened. Just have not found her yet.

Anybody tuned to any local groups that might be chatting or lack of chatting?

BTW this has always bothered me too;

Typically, Wendy said she would speak with Rachael two to three times a day by phone or social media, but she hasn’t spoken to her in days. Her last post on Facebook was June 18.

“It’s been awful. It’s been a nightmare. I’m numb. I’m in shock,” Wendy said. “I just can’t believe they can’t find her, and it’s not her characteristic to just take off.”

How could that happen when her mother said she called her 'on the way up' because of no phone service. I can't imagine she drove 6 miles back and forth to the vigil spot to call and chat with a friend two or three times a day.

I think fb is messing with you, I was able to pull it up just fine

Then it's messing with me too. Of course this isn't the first time. For some reason none of the searches I make on FB ever turn up anything.

I know a lot of times when I'm listening to one of "my" songs on the radio when I reach my destination I keep the car running until the songs over. Maybe someone surprised her while she was rocking out to the music, JMO

I notice a Rachel Lynn Mattice that is a photographer on Facebook, but it is not this Rachel? Is it possible she was claiming to be someone she isn't and finally thought running away from everyone was her only option? After all, she was planning on going to New York to be a nanny - that is fairly adventurous. Wondering if her parents thought she was living on their property, but with all the phone contact with her Mom it sounds like she was not actually at that property most of the time. I am just speculating JMO

So sad for this girl and you all have done some great thinking. Is it possible that she didn't disappear that night!? Not sure why this is assumed (though the facts are sparse) but if she disappeared the following day maybe it opens up more possibilities? Just started thinking about what that could mean --if no cell service, her mom wouldn't have been expecting to hear from her. But if she was LEAVING to go somewhere then maybe her stuff was in the car and she was in it getting ready to leave and then got out? Or it could have been staged. Def lots to think through.

After 9:00 at night, wooded area, maybe the car was left running with the headlights on while she unlocked camper door??

  • #213
Please disregard.

The only reason I would leave the car on and door open is if I was stepping inside to grab something I forgot or drop something off that would take less than 30 seconds. Another thought is that what if someone was hiding in her back seat waiting for her to come outside and leave? She starts the car up and the kidnapper pops up and threatens with weapon....Just some thoughts.

^^ (forgot about trailer door) Doesn't explain trailer door being left open though. Was her phone in her purse? Just curious to know if it looks like purse and or phone was tossed in her car as if she could have been trying to hurry up and evade a threat or if it was all neatly in the car. She could have tried to bolt out the door and was literally caught before she could put it in gear.

Having another thought about the camper and car door being left on.

Could she have been bringing things to the camper and was making a few trips back and forth and maybe left the car lights on for some light?

We need to check on the moon that night. Full moon or no moon would make a big difference out there in the middle of nowhere!

Maybe some light for her dog too after a car trip.

Maybe we should look into seeing if her car has the delayed headlights off feature that alot of newer vehicles have now. Was it ever stated that the car was facing the camper?

Lots of people on here seem to think it's very possible someone took Rachael.
I tend to think so, but it's been a mess of conflicting reports, IMO.

Well, I didn't believe Rachael texted she was going hiking at night, and I just saw a family member on social media wanting to spread the word that the news article saying she sent a text that she was going hiking that night is not true.

MOO, the family needs to appoint one spokes person to talk to the media and clear up some of the confusion. I'm sure many people close to her have a gut feeling of what they think happened, but nobody is sharing crucial details. MOO, if there's any signs she was abducted, please get the real facts out to the public now while you have media attention!
