Perinton, N.Y. (WHAM) - The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is asking for help to find a missing couple from Perinton.

A missing persons' report was filed on February 5 for Robert Ross, 73, and his wife Mary Ross, 72.

Robert had a medical appointment scheduled for January 30, but has not been seen since. Investigators said he did not show up for subsequent medical appointments.

Deputies contacted Ross' son, who lives outside the Rochester area, and subsequently began a missing persons investigation.

The last time Mary Ross was contacted was on January 29 when Mary spoke over the phone with her son.

No time of day given for the "ping".

Odd time of year for anyone to spend much time in the Charlotte neighborhood who isn't from there, businesses get very little traffic during the Winter time, in fact some shut down for the season. Perinton to Charlotte would be roughly a 35-40 minute drive by car, 390 to 490 to the Parkway to Lake Avenue, assuming the cell was in the possession of one or the other who are missing.

Going the other way, someone could have chucked the phone into the river or the gorge, either at Turning Point Park or north of there. Accuweather says it was 40 that day, with a low of 4 that morning. Or, they were on the other side of the river, but a tower on the west side of the river was pinged. Lots of stolen vehicles end up in the river, dumped from Seneca Park or close to it.

From the 13Wham link:

Family and friends are at loss to explain this disappearance, and understandably distraught. They tell 13WHAM that Robert Ross has stage four brain cancer.

Ross is growing more worried for his father's health. “We thought, ‘How much worse could it get? He's basically had between six and 18 months to live because of the cancer diagnosis.’ So we have six to 18 months, so we'll take every day we can get," Ross said. "And then, poof, he's gone. They're gone. He was her caretaker, and then it transitioned to her being his caretaker. I don't know what else to do. I really don't.”

Any chance they could have ended up in the river?

I wonder what his medical appointment revealed. Could it be a eminent terminal diagnosis and perhaps the two decided to go out 'together'?

New York State Police assisted with the air search in Charlotte by mid-morning but did not locate the pair, deputies said. They plan to next use drones to assist with the search near Lake Avenue. As of midday, the sheriff's Marine Unit was operating a drone by the Genesee River near St. Paul Boulevard.

St. Paul=east side of the river.

The couple's cellphone pinged to the Lake Avenue area of Charlotte in Rochester around 3 p.m. on Jan. 31. But no activity has been tracked since then. The last time the Ross' had any financial or credit card activity was at the end of January, deputies said.
"I don't know why they'd be in Charlotte," Bobby Ross said. "They were there twice in 27 years. Maybe Mary was driving and got lost."

So many older couples seem to be going missing lately.

I was thinking the same thing. Kind of frightening. I wonder if it happens more frequently in the winter months?

Robert and Mary Ross were reported missing after a social worker at Strong Memorial Hospital notified authorities Monday that Robert had missed three appointments for cancer treatment.

Robert, 73, recently was diagnosed with brain cancer. He and Mary, 72, had made arrangements for treatments before they went missing.
According to their son Bobby Ross, his father was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma, an inoperable brain tumor. He had between 6 to 18 months to live.

According to the Democrat & Chronicle, police searched the Charlotte area and Lake Ontario shoreline on Friday but ended with no new information. Mary's cellphone last pinged to the Lake Avenue area of Charlotte around 3 p.m. on Jan. 31. But no activity has occurred since.

Odd place to go, unless they wanted to go out to Charlotte Beach to walk?

Edited to add- there is a canal that runs through Perinton/ Fairport, as well as Schoen Place in Pittsford that runs along the same canal. Plenty of places to walk by the water closer to home.

Today I watched the son on video say Mary had a friend that lived near the river. Yet the news last week quoted him as saying they weren’t familiar with charlotte?!?! The police also said they withdrew money at a charlotte ATM. I don’t think they are in the area....I think the cash was for traveling to their final destination

I want to be sensitive but I think I'd probably keep driving with my SO too had I gotten that diagnosis. We'd drive wherever we wanted, say whatever we wanted, eat what we wanted, do or not do what we wanted... But, yes, I'd call my family so they would not look for me.

I hope there is news soon.

His father and step mother went missing, things do not always register in your head because you turn into a panic state initially. Then you start putting things together in your head. Then he remembered about her friend.

They'll be searching near the boat launches later this week.

http://13wham.com/news/local/scuba-crews-to-search-river-again-for-robert-and-mary-ross

Deputies said the last ping from their phone is believed to have come from the area of boat launches in a Charlotte marina.

Lt. Chris Fay, Commander of the Scuba Team, said each search they conduct is different. It all depends on whether crews have an idea of exactly where to look for a piece of evidence or a drowning victim. He said as the weather changes from day to day; so do the conditions out in the water.

Submerged in the murky and cold waters of the Genesee River, a diver searched the water for clues.

"The last known location, I believe, was pinged by the phone, was in the area of those boat launches. So really, it's a process of elimination at this point," Lt. Fay said.

But why go through Charlotte? It's not on the way to anywhere. Unless they were going to get on the Lake Ontario Parkway and head west along the lake to one of the other parks. I believe one of the news reports said the money withdrawn was not a large amount. Maybe for gas? But why not just use a credit card or debit card for gas? Why cash?

Random thoughts...

1) four cats left at home starving

2) Robert recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. And he had been Mary's caretaker, and now she'd become his. Implying that she had some sort of disability or illness as well. But apparently she was ok mentally, since plans were being made to place her in charge of finances, etc.

3) A couple years ago, a young male student from RIT went missing and was found (after the ice thawed about a month later) at Charlotte pier area. Apparently had jumped in or fallen in. I think the assumption was suicide -- history of depression. This was widely in news in Rochester area at the time. So, if one were contemplating a double suicide, that location may have come to mind. Except their car hasn't been found, which means (unless they decided on another location) they'd have had to drive off a boat launch (there's also a steep pathway at Turning Point park, going from the parking lot to river, that would be wide enough to get a car down. But you'd only really know about that if you had visited the park...this couple being from Perinton...unlikely...unless Mary had happened to go there with her friend)

Well, the Erie Canal is frozen over now in the Fairport/Pittsford area, so that wouldn't be an especially satisfying walk. Lake Ontario is not frozen at all now, except for a few ice volcanoes right at the shore. The river is also not frozen over in the area close to the lake (further into town it is, or at least it was). ETA - footage from yesterday's WHAM report shows quite a bit of ice buildup now in the river just south of the customs' building -- where there's a lot of small boatslips. I think the last time I crossed Pattonwood bridge (just south of where that footage was taken) was about 2 weeks ago, about the time the couple went missing, and I didn't see any ice at all at that time. And, btw, that scuba diver is a champion in my mind!

I checked the weather for that day -- pretty cold -- single digits in morning, and it would have been upper 20's around 3 pm on Jan 31 (when the phone pinged in Charlotte). So, kinda cold for a walk, especially on the river or lake, because it gets really windy on the water. I've been wanting to go down to Charlotte beach to see the snowy owl(s) hanging out there right now, but only made it to parking lot and driving along lake shore -- just too cold to go out on the boardwalk or pier (at least for me)

Speaking of weather...it's supposed to warm up considerably in next two days, into 40's and 50's, so that will make searching a bit easier.

The Perinton couple missing since late January do not appear to have left the country or even taken a drive on the Thruway.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has checked with Border Patrol and with airlines, and looked at toll records to learn whether Robert and Mary Ross took a trip and, as Capt. Samuel Bell said, “forgot to tell somebody.” But there’s been no indication of travel.
The couple drives a white 2017 Kia Sorrento sport utility vehicle with New York state license plate “BLUSTERY,” deputies said.
They never did anything out of the blue and everything was planned out meticulously."
He said it appeared that the final call was made to the University of Rochester Medical Center's surgical center.
Bobby Ross said he had planned to help his stepmother take over the family finances and set up medical proxys this week. The pair had set appointments with a local attorney and financial planner as well, he said.

https://www.democratandchronicle.co...-nothing-and-then-i-hope-they-find-something/

clip on son Robert showing more of the search area. He said the last phone call was made from up on the hill (I guess he means Lake Ave) from the boat slip areas just south of the customs building (in the clip, the customs building is the tall rectangular building next to the river)

Interesting comments below this clip about several incidents in area where people accidentally drove off into the river. Also a comment from a long-time colleague of Mary about her never leaving the cats unattended
