I'm new but I heard about this when it first happened as I am a Long Island resident. I thought my first post here should be my three top theories:
Ok...here are my three theories:
Foul Play Theory:
Mayer was involved with the mob. He was snitching. Just like in Donnie Brasco he gets a phone call to come to a "meeting." He leaves work early, stops off at the scrap metal place, has the face that will haunt his wife, stops home to say a goodbye but she is not home, so he drops the money, wallet and phone off and heads to the train station to meet his "friends." We know how that story ends....
Suicide Theory:
Ida hasnt earned money since 2007. He has been supportive through the legal troubles but they are living beyond their means. The money is running out. They're going to have to sell the house. Ida is depressed because of the loss of her career. Robert is depressed because he is not earning enough to support his family. He doesnt feel important anymore. He comes home get his gun, drops his stuff off, drives to the train station and parks his car where he thinks it will not be vandalized. He knows that if he kills himself, his family wont receive the insurance money so he walks deep and deep into Edgewood Preserve and into the tunnel system so he would not be found. He figures everyone will think he has gone missing and in three years his family can declare him legally dead and collect on the life insurance policy.
Took off Theory:
His whole life has been a lie. He can been talking to his boyfriend again against Ida's wishes. He loves his family but he cannot put up with the charade anymore. He cant come out. His family and children would never understand. Him and his boyfriend decide to start a new life in another part of the country. He is not worried. He is skilled. He can get handyman jobs off the books.
