The shopping bags are one of the most hotly debated aspects of the case. Regarding them, I have three hypotheses.
1- Meet up
In my opinion, this is the most likely scenario. Based on the items she bought—bedsheets and lingerie, for example—I would say she was very likely planning to meet someone, either at a hotel or at a house. So the destination they ended up going to may indeed have been another person’s home or a hotel.
2 – Lost/Destroyed
Sneha may have lost them while going to another establishment, or she left them somewhere, or—after she became the victim of something sinister—they were destroyed (this hypothesis does not exclude the first one, since it involves foul play).
3 – They were in the apartment
If this was not properly verified, and if Sneha had many items, it is possible that the shoes, bedsheets, and lingerie were taken into the apartment that night, and that she unpacked them and discarded the bags. The call (?) her husband Jon received in the early morning may have been related to this—her informing him that she had left the purchases there but was going out somewhere else.
The least likely scenario is number 3. Number 2 may have occurred in conjunction with number 1. However, one factor that lends some credibility to number 3 is the rain that was falling in New York that day and the proximity of the stores. It would not make sense for her to carry the bags around the city unless she was planning to meet someone—which is what I believe happened.
