Biegenwald was the boogeyman for us. None of us was allowed to be walking at night and this was hard pn a summer night at the beach when you want to hang out with friends. There was a fire at a rooming house in Point Pleasant NJ, I can't remember the year....Biegenwald had lived there prior and had problems with the owner. He was seen watching the fire....many people died in the fire. In the same town there was an older woman who he had done work for in the house. She was found dead, in a trunk inthe the attic.. Another neighbor of his, next town over, that he commuted on the train with, was found dead at 8 months pregnant....it was a brutal and bloody murder. There were so many times he was around when there was murder. Was this victim, Sylvia, a brunette?

How grusome. And what a haunting memory of childhood! Have you looked at the MurderPedia site? Are these deaths reflected in his bio or were they never prosecuted?

No, see page 1 of this thread for a photo of SL. She appears to have been blonde or perhaps strawberry blonde. MMQC could say more definitively.

This is O/T sorry, but do you remember the name of the pregnant woman?
I wonder where he was from 1974 until 1977?

I am trying to remember her name....She lived in Point Pleasant Borough. I hope I have time tomorrow to research. There were quite a few missing girls at the Shore in the early 70s. I recall Biegenwald so vividly because he used to cruise around the small Shore towns in a big old car...maybe a Cadillac . He would just stare at girls. My dad being military and a big guy always said to point him out to him if we saw him. Maria was an athletic girl who played soccer at her school and her legs were chopped off with something. Her Mom said she hoped that her daughter was at least able to struggle as hard as she could. Betsy just went out to the store on the corner and never came back. She and her Mom are buried near my parents

Thanks...I saw that later. Two things made me think of Biegenwald. Location and the engagement ring. I will have a chance to read more of the thread later.

Hi MMQC, I'm wondering if the name Richard Biegenwald was ever mentioned in this case. My dad was stationed in New Jersey and we lived down at the shore at this time when she went missing. Two girls from our area were found buried in Biegenwald's mother's backyard in State Island. His m.o. was to pick up girls walking on the road after dark.

Yes but it really did not go anywhere.

Re the part BBM: Oh, I see where you're going with this: Are you thinking that bc Biegnewald "collected" and stole jewelry that the engagement ring could have made SL his kind of target? Makes sense. However, the engagement ring is a source of some mystery on this thread. One of our verified insiders, MMQC, told us in Thread 1 about a convo (link goes to original post) she had with a brother of a friend of SL's BF/F a few years after SL disappeared, in which this brother of a friend of SL's BF/F claimed that the ring was still in SL's BF/F's possession. Neither VI has actually seen the ring since SL disappeared though, as far as I know, thus the mystery.

Hi, MMQC. Music books? Did you play an instrument too? Apologies if you have already told us this ...

Yes, both SL and I were in the Jr. HS orchestra. I played the french horn. I also played the accordian but not in the orchestra...LOL

Our hair color depended on the season and the amount of SUN-IN we used. Blonde to strawberry blond.

Well that just makes me want to see a school photo! LOL. Pretty cute.

Were you older when you played the accordian? It's hard to picture a little girl managing one of those big old things. My brother played accordian too :)

Do you have any pictures from those days, MMQC?

LOL, The only reason we were in the music program in Jr. HS was that we could read music. I played the accordian for about 4 or 5 years. I think I started at age 9 or 10. My brother played it so it was in the house. Although I had one we rented that was pint sized. Then I graduated to a used womans accordian. It had padding on the inside over the bellows so it would not pinch the you know whats! So sad that got ruined in a flood in my parents home about 15 yrs ago. Including me no one remembered it was in the cellar. I thought it was in my old bedroom closet. OH WELL. now I'm looking for a used one. I found one at an estate sale but it was almost as bad as the ruined one. I'll find one yet.

LOL, pictures? Nope! NONE. Not even my Jr. HS yearbook. I had a pity party one day shortly after my mother died and decided that since we never had any children I asked myself why am I saving them. SO....I had a nice fire in the wood stove and burned all my year books and grade school photos. I get in those moods and just tear up stuff and burn it. Well, at least the house was nice and warm that day!

BBM1: ROTFL! :floorlaugh: Who'da thunk?!
I hope you find one. I know someone who bought a used accordian on ebay -- a certain kind (I got a long explanation from him but don't remember a word of it!). He had to have to worked on though.

BBM2: Too bad about the photos. I would think it would take a real foul mood to make you do something like that! I am the opposite ... a terrible packrat -- you can't even imagine the stuff in my attic!

Out of state for my daughter's graduation, but will be back this weekend. Wishing everyone a nice Memorial Day weekend!

Hi-I am back again, and checking to see if there is anything new. While sitting with my mother, I was reading some things on Websleuths-one case in particular got my attention. It was the disappearance of Anthony Tumolo in Philadelphia many years ago. He was a kid who disappeared after an argument with his mom, and the police decided that he just ran away. What is it with these police officers who think all of these disappearances are runaways?! It is bizarre to me, that it used to be so common a notion?

MMQC I am wondering if your high school class gets together for reunions? My high school class is notoriously difficult to assemble – we managed a 30th reunion and it was wonderful to see some people I hadn’t seen, and so sad to acknowledge the ones who died. Among all the tragedies, no one just went missing from my youth. –Sylvia’s story makes me want to shake the trees!!! You have reignited the flame for Sylvia’s cause here and that tells me a lot about your indelible bond with her. –She is not forgotten. I really hope for a breakthrough in her case.

Sylvia’s story has me revisiting this time period of my youth - I am reading Patty Hearst’s memoir, Every Secret Thing – I remember feeling scared that something like that could happen in 1974 when it was news headlines. What a harrowing abduction it was – I am glad she wrote about it. It illustrates the uncertainty of life, how nothing is a given, and how in a split second your normal life can cease to exist as it did the day before. She was lucky to have made it out alive.

Thanks, J-Mo!

Really/// LE always dismisses these - because there's a 70/30 split - 70% of the time the troubled young one returns. Thus, LE has an enormous propensity to not activate resources for such.

STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS

There are so many cases - that remain open - one I saw on 48 hours was about an 18 yr old male from Florida - Klee. He disappeared in 1977 - last seen with his best friend (whi had just slepot with Klee's girlfriend). Klee disappeared and nothing happened for 30 years - developments revealed the best friend had been confronted by Klee that night - and bf bashed him with a rock - he then put the van in neutral and 86'd the van - with the body in a canal. The bf was never charged - not even with manslaiughter - the prevailing LAW at the time 0 be it 77 here - applies. The statute of limitations for manslaugher, in FLA , in 77 had been four years.

Do we know what types of statutes we are up against with re: to New York state? I will have a look- this could be somebody's golden ticket.

I remember the Klee case...you know, I always assumed that there was no statute of limitations on a killing, but I guess that isn't true-murder might not have a statute of limitations but I never considered manslaughter would have one. That might be why there wasn't any real interest in finding Sylvia after a while, if the police thought that BF/F might have killed her without meaning to. Where would this information be found?

OT: I'm from south Louisiana (Acadiana region) and our beloved Cajun/Creole music centers around the accordion and fiddle. There are a few artisans that make those instruments. I'm sure you could get leads on used instruments. Although most pass down their beloved instruments.

Well, with the Jody Arias case on hold until July... we still have to endure another high profile case in the Zimmerman-Martin case (it looks like Zimmerman robbed the snack food stand, btw).

I am going to whipout the pen and write Tricia and Kimster to see if they can mention Sylvia's case on her radio show. Tricia's show is gettng more and more popular... and knowing the facts of Sylvia's case - I am confident there will be an abundant number of listeners willing to be proactive with us and explore potential courses of action.

Wish me luck - will keep you informed.
