OMG it's her mistake but she feels they tricked her? She wasn't listening when they read her the Miranda for sure... oh people...

She was eventually saved by a passing boat and called 911 after reaching land to report Viafore missing - she worked as a volunteer gardener on the island.

Ahh, I didn't know she called from the island. Maybe that's what the telescope neighbor saw, some inconsistencies in that phone call. Perhaps Vincent was already dead, she killed him on the island - she did volunteer there and knows the island and the castle, calls police, and she pushes him off the island in his kayak (or hide him on the island or so close to shore), goes out in to the middle of the river, falls in the water and gets "rescued".

Yes she was very familiar with the island.

I find it very curious that they lived on the east side of the river, yet decided to drive across the bridge to the west side of the river. Then to make the hazardous crossing to the island only to have to cross again at sunset.

That scenario seems very strange to me. It is very easy to park on the east side near the island. They went out of their way IMO.

What could be her motive? Any ideas? He was supporting her. Could it have been some type of fraud?

Also, if she was married twice, why does she still have a green card?

He was supporting her as an article said. It reported that he was supporting her since she had quit her job as a bartender. I do not have a link but searching her name with key words like bartender and "quit job" may bring up the article. I do not know how long he was supporting her but there were also indications that she wanted to get her real estate license, was perhaps an aspiring photographer and had volunteered on the island as a gardener.

I don't know the time frame of all of that but that is what i remember from my extensive reading.

More reasons why this case against her has to be very tight. The defense attorney will ask why she would kill someone who was supporting her and who was about to marry her (and thus continue the support).

Not saying she didn't do it, just saying the evidence has to be good to convict.

Ms. Graswald, a native of Latvia, kept her married name despite divorcing Mr. Graswald’s son in 2009. But online and with Mr. Viafore, she used a different last name, Lipska, said Kimberly Popovich, a longtime friend of Mr. Viafore.

Ms. Popovich said she was not sure that Mr. Viafore had known of her prior marriage. She said he was taken by her, in part because she was 11 years younger. Two months ago they had traveled to Eastern Europe.

On Wednesday, the authorities said, Ms. Graswald went to Bannerman’s Island, known formally as Pollepel Island, to lay flowers in honor of Mr. Viafore. Investigators were there as part of their search efforts, and it was while they were speaking there that the most glaring contradictions emerged.

The Orange County district attorney, David M. Hoovler, would not say whether there was a life insurance policy, a will or estate, that was set to go to Ms. Graswald after Mr. Viafore’s death. Of her possible motives, Mr. Hoovler said, “Not going to speak of it.”

You are correct (as usual SwampMama)
The NY Times did an extensive write up. I actually found it via the comment thread in the WaPo article, and posted the tweet (snip & link) on 5/1

:bump:

New York Times tweet:
Murder Charge for Woman Who Said Fiancé’s Kayak Capsized in Hudson River http://nyti.ms/1DFnn23

From linked story:
[...]

Beside a photo posted to Mr. Viafore’s Facebook page on Jan. 26, of the couple kissing on a balcony in front of a golden sunset, Mr. Viafore wrote: “The wedding’s going to be in Europe on the Baltic Sea, but we plan to do a Hudson River Cruise Party with whatever friends want to party with us!”

But since his disappearance, Ms. Popovich said she recalled clues that something was off about her. Mr. Viafore, who held a well-paying job as a project manager, had been supporting her since she quit her job as a bartender. And she said the story of a reckless kayaking trip was out of character for Mr. Viafore.

“Even though he had that side of him that was kind of an adrenaline person, he always took precautions about himself,” Ms. Popovich said. “When this story came out that he was on the Hudson at 7:30 at night in those choppy waters, 30 degrees, it just didn’t jibe with me.”

Her brashness may have led to a break in the case.

I first assumed they launched near the island on the east side of the river. Turns out according to police report they launched on the west side. There's a picture on the NYT link showing the search. I feel chilly just looking at it.

She was placing flowers on the island when police arrested her. I wonder how she got there? They make it sound so easy to access. It's not. When I was there about 10 years ago, there was warning signs all around. It seems things have changed since then.

I suspect those telescope witnesses saw something incriminating.
It could have been timing, location actions.

She hasn't confessed and they don't have a body. She must have really bungled some statements for LE to be confident enough to arrest her. I wonder what she said?!

JMO
Arrest her and charging her with 2nd degree murder, I'm really curious to know what she said!!!

I don't know what her motive could be (yet), but I do know that being on the water at night in a kayak is pretty damn reckless. Has anyone from the boat that rescued her spoken out? I'd like to know how much boat traffic they experienced before coming up to Ms. G. in the water.

The Latvia-born Poughkeepsie resident said she felt tricked by police and made a mistake when she continued to talk to them after being read her Miranda Rights to remain silent.

She said that she and Viafore had been planning an August beach wedding and that she had hoped to have children with him.

According to Graswald, police have accused her of tampering with her fiancé's kayak to make him drown.

He is believed to be dead, but officials are not commenting on how he may have died or a possible motive.

:tyou: for posting this updated link JerseyGirl

I went through the images and embedded videos:

These are from the 1st embedded video (containing the partial interview with the accused)

Another WSer mentioned (? @BunnyHop?) the location of the Island. These two versions of the map help to show how true this really is.

It's VERY reckless. I was talking with co-worker earlier so take this as hearsay/rumor because I don't have a link yet, but he said she is not on his insurance. He also said the rescue boat "just happened upon her" so to speak.
I suppose he's listening to local TV stations.

As far as boat traffic, I would imagine it's sparse. Perhaps a few avid fisherman.
I live on a lake, and there are very few boats out in April.

There are barges out there as well.

:tyou: once again JG!

This jumped out at me:

(Snip)

Graswald formerly lived in Connecticut, where newspaper accounts show her winning honors in local photography contests. Records show she married twice there and divorced at least once.

ETA: granted it is the DM, but so far, they've been fairly accurate. I'm reading this with less than the usual amount of salt :moo:

Kimi, google map Cold Spring NY. Bannerman's is north a bit. Cold Spring is a charming town with many attractions. I have sat on the water front many times. Looking south you can see West Point.

Just north of Bannerman's is Beacon--very artsy, also a destination.
Right next to Bannerman's is Break Neck Mt. It attracts many hikers. Cars park along route 9D to access. You can also access the river along 9D.

I just can't understand why they chose to cross the river and launch from the west side, when they live on the east side and so many more attractions.

I also can't understand why they would have chosen to start out so late in the day.

I think she's in court tomorrow, so hope we find out more.

  • #137
I was thinking about how she could have tampered with the boat. Someone mentioned drill holes, but that would have been evident to him.

What if they had a fight and things got nasty. It looks like his boat has a storage hatch with a cover. What if she loaded it with rocks. That would make it hard for him to maneuver and perhaps unstable.

What if the witnesses saw this?

ITA. Hopefully the court appearance will reveal more. I will start on a google map (wish me luck, I'm mobile) and switch over to my laptop tomorrow to edit with whatever further points of interest become available.

Do we have an approximate address for them?

I have to reread the thread. Is the exact launching point known?

If you, or anyone else would please chime in with points for me to add to my map, that would be great!

:gthanks:

I can't really see how could she have tempered with the kayak either.
I also can't understand why would one commit such a crime in a place where could've easily been witnesses.
The fight getting out of hand or maybe him falling to the water and she not helping him make more sense to a 2nd degree murder charge. MOO as always.
