NZ - Philip Smith jailed for killing father of boy he abused, Wellington, Dec 1995

Hope we can get a Spanish speaker on this thread now. That would be really useful.

Ha! I just checked twitter to see if police had the sense to get the news out there in the language people actually speak in Chile. They haven't, but in the last 10 mins a Spanish speaker has begun tweeting and linking the story to others, in Spanish. :)

They are now saying chile was just a stop over on his way to Brazil. This is just crazy!!! I'm so embarrassed to be a New Zealander!

Phillip Smith's long history of terrifying and abusive behaviour

I now believe no member of the victims' family is safe until he is caught. And he is highly likely to become fixated upon other victims. And will be an extreme danger to them - and their families. Authorities made a really poor decision in letting this one go free, in my opinion. Some poor child in Chile is likely to pay the price. :(

Jeez, I missed that. Brazil? Mind you, he might find himself a target if he tries to hustle his way around the streets there. Unless some dang fool has provided him with cash - in which case I hope they get thrown in jail.

So now the msg has to get out there in Portuguese as well. Sigh. :(

He's making authorities look foolish, in my opinion. They're in Chile asking for help, while he's swanning around in Brazil.

'Fugitive murderer Phillip John Smith has flown to Brazil after spending a few hours in transit at a Chilean airport, police in Chile say.

Earlier Prime Minister John Key said he would be personally alerting the Chilean president about runaway prisoner Smith when they meet at APEC this week.'

*That's NZ prime Minister, by the way. :/

I never like to be harsh but....isn't resigning in disgrace the least this buffoon can do? A New Zealand citizen was murdered protecting his little boy who was raped by this criminal, now on the loose, thanks to authorities? The bereaved family again living in fear, and the Prime Minister thinks it's a JOKE??!!

'The Prime Minister was asked by our political editor Barry Soper what he'd say to the Chilean President when they meet at APEC in Beijing tonight.
"I'll just let her know, you know, there's someone out there from New Zealand she may not want to invite round for lunch," Key said.

Barry Soper's told Mike Hosking he was surprised Mr Key laughed throughout the comment, and he's betting that comment will land him in hot water ... especially given the horror of Philip Smith's crimes.

"The family won't be happy about that at all, and it's an injudicious comment, to say the least," Soper said.'

The killer himself has sent a message saying he's no threat. So I guess that's all right then.

'Fugitive murderer and child sex offender Phillip John Smith claims he poses no threat to his victim or the victims’ family after fleeing New Zealand while on temporary release from jail, according to his lawyer.

Auckland human rights lawyer Dr Tony Ellis, who had represented Smith several times for appeals since 2002 and at his 2011 parole hearing, said he was unsurprised Smith had contacted him after fleeing New Zealand last Thursday afternoon.'

More info in article, above...no words for what I just read, in regard to his attorney's comments throughout, for one. For real????! Just unbelievable. There's representing your client and then then there's just letting this guy loose on society and...can't fathom what I read! [And referencing Post #15 by NZlander "cpaz33" -- good gosh, just the attitude already, can see exactly what NZ is up against, in terms of justice/safety].

This guy is evil personified, it's certainly not NZ's finest moment. He is now claiming a prison officer helped him escape.
The one small satisfaction we are getting is laughing at him, because he is terribly upset because corrections have taken his hairpiece off him, and made him appear in court without it. evidently he is getting a hard time in prison, as many other inmates are paying the price for his escape, with their leave being cancelled.
