Toledo community to commemorate Kei’Mani’s birthday Friday

The 7th grader was described as a sweet girl who was a joy to have in the classroom.

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Kei’Mani Latigue would’ve turned 14 on Friday, March 28. Community organizers are inviting the public to gather to commemorate her birthday.

Community members plan to gather at Wilson Park on Otto Street in Toledo between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday night for a candlelight celebration of life. An invitation said people are encouraged to bring out their cars, slingshots and bikes as part of the event to honor Kei’Mani. Another flyer said a balloon release is planned at 6p.m. Friday at Ohio Skate on Opportunity Drive.

Meantime, local businesses are teaming up Sunday to raise money for the teen’s funeral services. Wheelin’ on the Rocks is holding a benefit and poker run. The main event will be at Wheelin’, with other businesses participating in the poker run -- Kickstand Saloon, Daffy’s and Corner Saloon. All donations will go to Brown Legacy Memorial Funeral Home.

Keimani came to school with injuries regularly.

“She would have welt marks on the back of her neck, back, and stomach,” she said. “She was constantly bruised. She was fearful of going home.”

so which is true, the abuse allegations predate grandma's custody or are recent? Both things have now been reported.

I believe grandmother is the bio mother's mother. Godmother is a different lady who had custody of her from 9 months old to approx. five years ago. Godmother then gave custody to grandmother.

One of Kei’Mani Latigue’s former teachers told 13 Action News school staff from Bennett Venture Academy reported concerning things the young girl said to Children Services on multiple occasions -- adding that Kei’Mani was with a different guardian at that time. We’re still working to confirm who Kei’Mani’s guardian was at the time.

She told 13 Action News that she and other staff members called Children Services to report concerning things Kei’Mani said. The former teacher said Kei’Mani had come to school with visible injuries, adding that the young girl was with a different guardian during that time.

So I am super confused. Iit had been reported by grandma on camera that grandma had custody for the past five years? Did she and godmother trade Keimani back and forth between their households? Who had custody of Keimani last year when she was reportedly coming to school bruised and frightened if not grandmother?

This has to be one of the saddest sickest cases I have read.....13 year old trying to make it despite the brutal circumstances in her life...loved Hoops was an honor student and ..taken by her own family.....the only standups that were helpful were the teacher and Dad's GF....rest in peace they can't hurt you anymore in heaven....
