Yes, I've tuned into those, but have never looked into them much further than what is available to click on, on the county interface. The one that was in our place (was not mine) had what we called crystals that you bought at Radio Shack for different stations/frequencies. Some crystals could be bought that you weren't supposed to have (not from Radio Shack) that gave you access to frequencies that the law would talk on, that the public wouldn't normally have access to. I think it would be hard to keep folks from getting into the various frequencies these days. The crystals you weren't supposed to have were sold at certain pawn shops back in the day, iirc. Kinda like the radar busters that folks used to put in your cars to alert them if a cop was around. They weren't legal to have (in your car), but it was legal to buy them. Most folks never got caught with radar busters, or the police scanners w/the illegal crystals in them, unless they were caught doing something else and got them confiscated then. The person that had the scanner at our place was just nosy. If they heard any little thing, they'd dial up everyone in the county.

Yes! And worse yet is some will get in their vehicle to check out the action. . .

What did the 3-year-old see? :notgood: I wonder if the killers debated killing him too, although he could not identify them...

The reward — set at $10,000 before the request — is now $11,365.

Is it just me that thinks the reward is at an odd number? I know the area is quite poor, so it seems like they are giving what they can, but to increase by exactly 1,365 dollars seems like a reminder that a year has passed and there has been no justice for the Rhodens and the Gilleys. :waiting:

It's disturbing that the reward for the murderers of 8 people is so low. I realize the one businessman retracted his $25,000 reward after it became known there were pot plants at the Rhodens, but is there no other wealthy citizens concerned about putting these killers behind bars?

I think it goes beyond the pot plants. The Rhodens did not have a good reputation (from what I've heard/know) .. for the most part people around here aren't even talking about this much anymore. There are a few posters up asking for info around town but that's about it. If it had been a prominent family in the community or a family that others viewed as purely innocent- the coverage, reactions, rewards and investigation would have been much different I believe. Just my opinion of course..

Thank you for the clarification, rsd1200. That's really fascinating. I've never heard about them before now. It does sound trying though to have your housemate with that noise on all the time.

I agree!
Once the pot plants were mentioned, people's perceptions changed.

This is why some folks (possibly the Rs) get into growin' a little weed. You can't o.d. on weed, so you're not going to kill anyone with it, it's safer than alcohol, and it helps them pay the bills in regions w/o much employment, and a high poverty rate (21.4% live in poverty in Pike County, OH).

SBM.
Well unless the weed is laced with something.
I guess that would be the only way it could kill someone.
But you're right, in most instances, weed doesn't kill.

Most growers wouldn't really have a reason to lace. That's typically something a dealer might offer, something someone dangerous may do to harm you, or a user thang. Your comment did bring to mind this other WS news item that was quite strange. Seems these folks were pretty into lacing and stole a brain, and stored it under their trailer, in a WalMart sack, so they could lace their weed w/the formaldehyde. They even gave the brain a name; Freddy.

Also, the announcement of Jeff Ruby pulling his $25,000 reward received widespread media coverage, and was a huge topic of conversation.

I think that this, along with the announcement of the pot grow operations and also the cockfighting changed the feelings of many members of the public about the murders.

Jeff Ruby is widely known and respected in the Tri state area, and when he pulled his reward I am sure most thought it was for good reason.

But there is no proof they existed. Not one picture of even a leaf much less a plant or grow operation. Why?

IMO, they (LE) wanted to shed the Rhodens in a bad light.
Why? I don't know.
I pers believe there were plants at some of the locations, but nothing like what LE was saying.

What about the W's?According to them BW and CR1 were best friends. With granny having that big horse ranch you would think she would chip in a few dollars for her son's best friend.

I know Ruby has done a lot of good things in the Tri-state area, and I'm sure he meant well, but it probably would have been better for him to have waited a bit to get all of the facts. With Ruby's contacts, he may know more than media (and, therefore us). My heart kinda sunk when he withdrew his reward. The grows were only at two places w/three adults, combined, living at those two places. The fact remains that someone murdered two very young mothers, a kid barely old enough to get a learner's permit, a mother/grandmother, and young father, who had no grows at their homes. They are still deceased, and it turns out that the why, seems to be much bigger than a couple of little grows (via Reader) on their property, but their family, and the public, still needs to have someone capable of committing this crime, caught, and locked away for the rest of their life/lives. What they are guilty of is much worse x infinity than growing a little weed, and they are still out there roaming around. I was very disappointed in how Ruby handled that.

The only proof is that DS said he found a "tray" of them while strolling about the property, after finding his best friend, and cousin, deceased, which then triggered him to call 911. When I think "tray", I think of a tomato plant tray or a flower tray with seedlings in their own little containers, within a "tray".

And the mother of her great grand daughter...

They could be horse poor. With 2000 acres, horses, dogs and hairy pigs, I can imagine that is a farm operation that is run daylight to dawn. Horses are a lot of work. They have to be groomed, exercised, trained and fed. Lots of $$$ involved in keeping the operation up and running.

My problem is the entire family moving and leaving the elderly parents without much needed help to run their ranch. Maybe they have good hired hands? I don't know. Just seems if GW the 3rd is set to inherit the horse ranch he would have stuck around to make sure the operation was being run correctly.

Outsiders who would like a piece of that pie (horse farm) have ways of becoming irreplaceable and taking advantage of elderly folks. Maybe GW the 3rd has a brother that has stepped in. I don't know. It would not surprise me at all that AW was a pot stirrer and very, very controlling. Just my opinion. :moo: :cow:

Just came across our news. I don't think it was from the rumored threat that Reader had spoke of, only b/c it states on the Boyd Cty., Ky. Coroner's Office link, that last year they ranked third in o.d. deaths, behind L'vlle (Jefferson Cty.), and Lexington (Fayette Cty.), the two major Kentucky cities.

Jefferson County has over 600,000 folks living in Louisville, alone.

Fayette-Lexington has a population of more than 300,000.

Boyd County, has only has around 50,000 people in the entire county, with 21,000 or so living in Ashland, and ranked 3rd.

When they said a "tray" I assumed it was no bigger than 12" x 24" with seedling plants in it. Why DS would have decided to take a stroll and find them is unbelievable. I think he knew they were there and checked to see if they were taken when KR was shot. I wondered also if he decided some of them should be hidden in his trunk before LE was called. Maybe some cash also. Did LE ever confirm there was cash at KR's house like DS said? I don't recall if they did...

I don't think there was much visitation or help between GWIII's clan and the parents/grand parents with the horse farm. I think they were estranged. Never any mention of the grand parents by any one until the property search.
