n an emotionally charged 11-minute-long news conference Friday afternoon, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla announced that his office, the Ohio Attorney General's Office and various other law enforcement agencies are now investigating a particular cell of a loosely organized computer-hacking collective known as Anonymous.

"Say what you want to say about me. Do character assassinations like you do and you're going to continue to do," said Abdalla. "But when you start doing a hatchet job on innocent children, putting their names out on the computers and the Internet, on Facebook, I'm coming after you. Simple as that.

Just......LOL.

I know nothing about hacking, but are we not talking about the same people that do way more than just google search information?:floorlaugh:

I am so happy to see so much support for this victim, and so many willing to raise their voices against rape culture.

For those who despair against "the youth of today", take heart from these young women and men who are committing themselves to this issue. Contrast with the Sherriff, the Chief, the coach, and all the older generation folks involved who are still excusing this type of criminal behavior.

I wish I were closer so I could go lend my support in person!

How about a charge against the so-called sheriff?

Clear as mud. There seems to be a small disconnect between the AG's office and the Sheriff.

If ever there was a start from scratch case, this is one. My very first thought when the video was released by Anon was about the Sheriff having a copy already thanks to the zip drive.

There is no question in my mind that the family has a copy of that zip drive. That is what I would do. I think. Unless I implicitly trusted LE to do the right thing. Which clearly didnt happen here. IMO.

Someone needs to come in and shut everything down in order to save this investigation. Who cares if the victim txtd someone-wouldnt you be in complete disbelief? And how unconscionable is it for the defense to start releasing that stuff as well?

Fine, dont try it in the media. Dont comment. If the investigation was solid, the sheriff wouldnt be hanging himself in the media trying to defend the indefensible. He would be giving controlled press conferences perhaps, but not this. At least I havent seen anything like this when the investigation was solid.

You are caught dude-you cant make this right. Either cop to the issues and step aside or SHUT UP.

jmvho.

Anon said that everything the sheriff said on that interview was a lie. The twitter war happened last night. The sheriff threating anon and anon constantly releasing "uh oh" information on the sheriff. I think the sheriff picked the wrong group to have a war of words with. If the information released was true, I would suspect hearing about the sheriff quitting. From listening to this sheriff, it is my opinion, he really doesn't need to be a sheriff.

From the CNN article above, it is my understanding that when this first happened, 3 of the boys were offered a deal to testify against the 2 that are charged now. Maybe that is why nobody else has been charged?? A deal!:banghead:

There is a huge protest today. On twitter, there are hundreds of people car pooling from all over going to it at 11am today. They have a DJ and tons of donations of food and coffee. Also, there are reports of supporters for the alledged rapist being there. I hope everybody stays peaceful. Tons of media are already there.

You get the "Understatement of the week" award!

Talk about throwing gas on a fire. This guy has no clue what he's up against.

Please do not use the names of minors involved in this case unless and until they are charged as adults. You may use initials and you may link to articles with their full names, but you may not post their names on Websleuths at this time.

Thank you!

City officials will update the site as new information becomes available.

City leaders know that many people outside Eastern Ohio are interested in this matter and people from other states and countries may not be familiar with some basic facts about the background of the case. This site is not designed to be a forum for how the Juvenile Court ought to rule in this matter.

I wonder about the parents of these monstrous kids. Especially if they try to keep them out of trouble for the sake of their "futures". What does that say about the adults? That it is more important that these boys have a blemish-free future than to join in in trying to determine what causes young men to behave and think like monsters? And making sure there is punishment for those who do?

Someone is raising these kids, apparently in such a way that they feel untouchable, coaches, parents, etc. disgusting, scary and likely going on everywhere.

I agree... I don't think this is an "isolated"incident... I think it represents the mindset of way too many communities!:banghead:

Umm-there seems to be some relevant information missing. Like, the parents of the victim presenting LE with a zipdrive of the evidence needed to prosecute the case. There seems to be missing the original adult charges-kidnapping included. There is no explanation of the kick to juvie.

At a minimum it should be mentioned that these charges were originally adult charges-jmvho.

-Nothing in Ohio’s criminal statutes makes it a crime for someone to ridicule a rape victim on a video or otherwise say horrible things about another person. Further, nothing in the law allows someone who says repugnant things on Twitter, Facebook, or other Internet sites to be criminally charged for such statements.
Fair enough. I guess we can assume, however, that admitting to participating in the rape or disseminating photos of the victim or video of the crime is prosecutable.

Just trying to keep this straight in my mind.

-Rules governing prosecutors and law enforcement significantly limit what they can say to the news media or the public before the case goes to trial. Violating those rules can result in the charges being dismissed against the people charged in a case.
-With respect to other charges that could be brought aside from allegations of sexual assault, prosecutors and police have up to two years (for misdemeanors) and up to six years (for felonies) to bring charges. Often, charges are deferred until after a trial, to evaluate the sworn testimony of witnesses at the trial

I am going to believe that the first paragraph above applies to the Sheriff. In case he is following here, he should shut up according to the AG.

Secondly, I personally feel strongly that the comfort the second paragraph might be attempting to offer sounds like a really, really, really long time for a victim to have to wait to have people who committed crimes against her charged and brought to justice.

I think I am losing my objectivity here.

Just to revisit some of the earlier media on this case:
Abdalla said the Jefferson County prosecutor's office filed a motion for a discretionary bind over as a possible first step that could see the two high school athletes who are accused of kidnapping and raping a female juvenile tried as adults.

Assistant Prosecutor Sam Pate said Monday afternoon the motion filed earlier in the day will require a preliminary hearing to be held by the visiting judge.

"If probable cause is established at the preliminary hearing, then the court will order an amenability hearing into the background of the two juveniles. The court would then determine if the defendants should be tried as adults or as juveniles," explained Pate.
