I am very confused for why you are bringing race into this. Most of the guys involved in this scandal, except for one, are white. The victim might be biracial, but that doesn't matter at this point. She is still anonymous. What does that have to do with the amount of coverage?
Also, I know what case you are talking about in the second paragraph, and it did get a bit of national coverage. It's most likely that the victim in the Richmond gang rape case was black or Hispanic, since that's what the demographics of that city show. The media probably did ignore that case because it happened in a crime-ridden area.
Also, I am confused when you say that the victim went to a private school, and then: "Rich? Not the Mitt Romney characterization". Um, the media doesn't like to report on rich teenagers/children who are victims of crimes? :waitasec:

What does race have to do with this? It
might be a factor. The mainstream press is largely liberal, that's just how it is. We saw that 92% of the press voted for Bill Clinton, and probably more voted for Obama.
As part of this backdrop, the press
loves to discuss racism charges anytime they can. Remember Tawana Brawley in the 1980s? She reportedly was abused and raped by a pack of wild, white police officers. It was the coast to coast story for weeks. All a farce. (Al Sharpton's claim to fame.) Likewise, when the alleged Duke lacrosse players were vilified from east to west. False. Farce.
The Richmond, CA case was horrific, but got little coverage outside of the Bay Area. Why? There is a case in the Redwood City / Palo Alto area that had the police "shocked" as some very young girls who were brutalized and raped at a young age. Veteran police officers of 30 years say they have
never seen anything like it. Little coverage. From what I can glean, it is a brutal attack and rape of illegal immigrant on very young, illegal immigrant girls. The press and public don't seem interested. Why?
I think one of the most gruesome crimes I have heard about was the rape, murder, and torture of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom of Knoxville, Tennessee. The national media ignored it. Many contend that the crime fit no political agenda, thus it wasn't covered. (Reverse racism.)
Anyhow, the press doesn't like to cover cases where a black man (or youth) is charged with a brutal crime, especially when committed against a European American. It's just something I have seen through the decades. This case gets a little complicated, as I've heard the girl and second attacker might be biracial. I've also read that several secondary participants might be black. The only reason this story has caught fire is b/c of the Internet, crime bloggers, and Anonymous.
This story fits no neat agenda, and there isn't a clear-cut political agenda.
I have no proof of this, but it sounds like this crime might include economic status, connections, and envy, which is harder to quantify. And race can often parallel these issues. It seems like there are rumors that those with connections, and money, are getting off.
