OHP officials need your help identifying homicide victim in 1990 cold case
Updated: 6:37 PM CDT Jul 25, 2018

“Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are seeking the public’s help in identifying a homicide victim from a 28-year-old cold case.

On January 18, 1990, officials said a semi-truck and trailer driven by James Edward Taylor of Atlanta, Texas crashed on US 259, near Big Cedar, in southern Leflore County, Oklahoma. A black female passenger in the truck was killed during the collision. Troopers were unable to identify the female passenger (Jane Doe).

James Taylor said Jane Doe was a hitchhiker he had picked up 15 minutes before the collision, according to the OHP. Taylor’s sister told investigators Taylor had picked Jane Doe up near 55th and Euclid in Cleveland, Ohio, and she believed Jane Doe went by “Beth” or “Baby.” Taylor was subsequently charged with Jane Doe’s death, but charges were eventually dismissed. Taylor died in 2008.

Jane Doe was 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighed 87 pounds. She was believed to be between 25 to 35 years old, had short black hair, brown eyes, and scars on her forehead and upper left arm. Jane Doe had a scar on her abdomen, believed to be from a C-section. She was wearing a shirt, sweater, pantyhose, pants and belt; the only personal item found with Jane Doe was a gold-colored ring with a pink stone. It was discovered by OHP Traffic Homicide Investigator/Trooper Tim Baker at Evans and Miller Funeral Home in Poteau who maintained custody of the ring for the past 28 years and provided the ring to Trooper Baker.”

Anyone who has information is asked to call 1-866-OHPTIPS.

———————————————

Am I reading this correctly? - The truck driver claimed to have picked her up just 15 minutes prior to the accident, inferring she was picked up in Oklahoma? But the truck driver’s sister reported that he had actually picked her up long before the accident and from Ohio???

Why on earth would he lie to police and/or his sister? You’d think if something nefarious were going on, he would lie to police but he probably wouldn’t have also called his sister up and told her, “hey, I picked up this girl in Ohio...”. Seems a little odd IMO.

That is a ring I’ve not seen before... anyone know what that stone might be? It doesn’t appear to be costume jewelry...

It looks like a star sapphire. Star Sapphire Gemstone Information - GemSelect

She is now on the DDP spreadsheet with a top match of 84.5cM and four matches over 40cM. Looks promising.

I'm just looking at her admixture. Could she be African? From Africa, not African-American. More specifically Senegalese or Gambian.

For sure! I think 'African-American' just implies an American with at least some ancestry from Africa, so I don't think you could identify nationality from admixture. If she is an African national that would make things more difficult, as I don't think they have the depth of MP record-keeping as the US has.
**edit** I think the biggest hint would be if the truck driver (mentioned in post #1) had mentioned if Beth had spoken with any kind of accent. I don't see anything about how she spoke though.

To me African-American means someone descended from slaves brought over from Africa to United States. People from African countries would be Nigerian-American or Tanzanian-American, etc., so I wasn't implying her nationality, more so her ethnicity (which, according to Oracle was Mandinka). It would be highly unusual (dare I say impossible) for an African-American (see my definiton of the term) to only descend from one African ethnic group.

African-American seems to have a variety of potential definitions; one is what you brought up (descended from slaves), but there are also a lot of people brought over from recent immigration who use the term (or [blank]-American like you said). That's why NamUs uses the term 'Black/African American', to cover all their bases and not assume the UIDs origins.
This is a potential problem with all UIDs in NamUs, tbh; if they had gone missing from another country, there's a big possibility the match will be missed.
Her DDP is showing there's always a chance though! Top match is still 84.5 cM, but you never know when the right person will submit DNA and everything will come together.

On January 18, 1990 long haul truck driver James Edward Taylor crashed his truck on highway 259 near Big Cedar. Taylor would survive the crash, however his passenger would not. While in and of itself this isn’t an odd occurrence- the fact that his passenger would die while not having her identity known, is.
Taylor would tell authorities that he picked the woman up about fifteen minutes before the crash happened. However, Taylor’s sister told Oklahoma State Troopers that Taylor had picked up Jane Doe in Cleveland, Ohio- some 1.000 miles away from the crash site in Oklahoma. She also told troopers that she believed Jane Doe might have gone by either “Beth” or “Baby”, but wasn’t sure. Taylor was charged with Jane Doe’s death, however charges were eventually dismissed. Whether he actually killed Jane Doe or knew her identity at this point is irrelevant, because James Edward Taylor passed away in 2008.

Jane Doe is believed to have been between 30 and 50 when she died. She had an abdominal scar believed to have been from a c-section, as well as scars on her forehead and on her upper left arm. She was African American with brown eyes and short, curly black hair. She was wearing a long sleeved blue and grey striped shirt, a long sleeved beige sweater, blue corduroy pants, a tan fabric belt and pantyhose. She also had on a gold ring with a small pink or purple stone that she wore on her left middle finger. I have included a picture of the ring.

DNA is on file for Jane Doe, and I have included screenshots of the comparisons that have been completed for her.
If you have any information about Jane Doe’s identity, please contact Oklahoma Highway Patrol - Troop D at (918) 423-3636

I wish they stated what role they initially believed he played in her death.

Her manner of death was determined to be accidental, so I have to think that it must have been no more than negligence of some kind. Not sure you could describe even DUI, etc., as "accidental."

"Jane Doe West Alton" Remains were found by two fishermen in West Alton near the Clark Bridge. Remains were found in a suitcase bound by clothesline and anchored by barbells. The child had been deceased for a short period of time, likely within a few weeks, before being found.

This female was found in a sleeper cab of an overturned semi truck. She was a hitchhiker picked up by the semi driver in Cleveland Ohio - near East 55th and Euclid St - a few days prior to the accident. She was possibly named 'Beth' or 'Baby.'
