"I don't think it was an initiation – I know it was an initiation, my son told me it was an initiation," Mr Johnson told Fairfax Media.

Even before his name became known worldwide — before authorities said he and two other boys killed an Australian college student because they were "bored" — the boy known as "Bug" had changed.

Slightly OT but when I moved to a rural redneck area I really noticed how the young males dressed and acted the same as the grown men. You just don't see teens wearing baggy pants or going "goth". The teens are all younger versions of the older men, they dress the same and act the same.

I believe the reason for that is the culture and lifestyle, hunting, fishing, outdoor activities are a major thing here for just about everyone. The young kids start to participate in those activities and clubs with the adults and as such socializing and being mentored by much older males is natural, they stay in those mixed social groups and when they are grown and have their own kids the cycle goes on.

Their relationship with the older males whether it be a dad, grandpa, uncles, etc....is more complex as they are also buddy's that go out regularly and have fun together. The young kids feel compelled to prove themselves and their skills so they are seen as competent and respected by the older males that they socialize with.

It is interesting to see how that effects the youth. Like I said while I am sure the teenagers do engage in teenage type antics amongst themselves but they have strong ideas about how men look and act and they pattern themselves after that even during the "rebellious" years.

Do you think this doesn't happen in non-rural, non-redneck areas? They might wear saggy pants (well, maybe years ago) and chains, but every day I see young guys working and learning with older guys. Maybe not hunting or fishing lol, but they are working on cars, houses, having family/friend/neighborhood gatherings. These things aren't unique to white rural rednecks!

Um, that is exactly what these three did!

:waitasec:

Yes, which is exactly why I highly doubt they ARE in an actual gang. Because actual gangstas don't roll that way.

& this downplaying of crips is appalling. They are on our government's watch list for crying out loud.

Dear gods. Men who are good role models come in all sizes, shapes, flavours, orientations and wardrobe choices. The end.

I know goth kids who have grown up with goth parents. Lovely family. They keep pet spiders. The dad - and the boys - all wear eyeliner and sometimes maybe a cape. But they are NICE people and the man of the house is a REAL man raising his kids right. He's a great role model.

The world has come a long way since masculinity was all buzz cuts and beer and square shouldered hunting parties. Well, for most of us it has.

burbqueen, cheers for your insightful posts and I wanted to ask -- is it at all possible these boys were sort of 'fringe' to a gang, as in, in the process of becoming gang members, junior members or something like that? When I think 'wannabes' I think of skinny white boys with spray cans who need to pull their pants up. Worst crime - tagging a train, maybe pulling a knife on some old lady at the train station before running away. You know? Not guns and the like. Maybe it's just because I'm an Aussie and have no clue, lol. :B

These parents have to know, when you kid walks out the door dressed like a gangster and flying colors, you have to know! I know I did not have to deal with social media when my children were growing up, but we do with grandchildren (2 are 16 years old)!
My kids are racially mixed, and never refer to themselves as one race or the other only as American's!
I would surprise each one of my kids at school on lunch, with a large pizza and a six pack of soda! It was not only to be nice and enjoy my child's company, but it was to meet the kids they did not bring home! My kids always say expect the unexpected from both parents and that is how the raise their children! We were always in the shadow's because the devil is in the details!
To become a pack of dogs, you have to hang out with a pack of dogs! If any of these parents have other children they should be picked up and put in foster care, after all they have proven that they raise murderer's, how could anyone do worse?

Exactly!!! These parents need to be looked at. They are minors and apparently they werent on SM or checking on where their kids were at during the summer. Come on now. I dont feel sorry for them.

As for the gang stuff. Im not trying to downplay. All I'm saying is anyone can start their own set of gang, but be fake. Being a gang is not about tattoos or pictures or none of that. It is about what you do and who you know. So if they are a part of a gang what did they do before to put their set out there? Who were their rivals? Were they affliated with a larger crip gang? and please dont tell me the leader was some 17 year old, good grief. All I'm saying is I need background information on these little idiots before I ready to claim they are a real Crips.

Pranksters are little teenage bullies that we use to make fun of when I was in my 20's. They wore the clothes, claimed some neighborhood, even carried guns, but when you ask them who is their OG? Who you wit cuz(affilliated set)? They would stutter and say just me and some homies. Which meant his high school buddies or neighboor hood friends roillin around in someones moms honda. LMAO! Claiming crip or blood and no proof can get your killed. See you can do that in a small town in Oklahoma and not get caught. Do that in Dallas. Chicago or New York for instance and you will get caught up real quick.

Wannabees dont have to be white!! Usually the wannabees are in some small city or town and they watching too much TV or listening to too much music. They are bored, neglected youth that want feel they belong to something important so they start a gang.

I hope they get tried as adults, go to real prison and get the snot kicked out of them by real crips.

And yes there are tons of gangs and gang members all over this nation and no, they dont randomly shoot people on purpose cause they are bored. Teens do crazy stupid stuff like this.

Course the difference is in some urban areas 30% of the grown males have spent time in prison. They ARE the role models! They are also a whole lot more likely to overlook or make excuses for bad behavior in the youth.

Ahhh - well, GL, thank you for explaining.

Makes me wonder though - how'd these kids get the impression that was what being a Crip was all about? Or do you think maybe this was some regional, or personal, perception and hatred they've projected onto the 'Crip' personas they wanted?

Just trying to understand.

ETA: And sorry - but I do think this actually was a hate crime. It makes sense that they were probably 'wannabes' then, from what you & burbqueen have said.

ausgirl you dont count! LMAO! Kidding, Kidding! People get the impression of what a gang is like by watching TV, movies, music and what they see on the internet just like most people. Or one of them may have had a relative or something that was down with a gang. You can be down with a particular gang but not initiated in. Happens all the time. Them choosing crips is a no brainer. Crip is the most easily recognized street gang. I was a blood, surrounded in Dallas by Crips everywhere. IN the 90's it was the thing to do. gangster rap dominated. Artist wore flags all the time, now not at all. To be honest, being in a gang isnt such a big thing to do anymore except in the worst urban neighborhoods. Its all about making money now. I remember when people wouldnt even sell to someone of another gang. Now it's all fair play when it comes to stealing and dealin.

I agree with Gardenlady. Bloods or crips are not ethnic gangs. There is actually an organized group of white bloods. I think the same for crips too. I still once again dont understand how race factors in this when one of the...perps was white or biracial? So to say crips are hatin on white people is odd since one of this group wasnt black. Im just waiting for someone to offend me with a bi-racial comment.

Obviously these guys wanted to go to jail. Thats my theory. Cause this was the dumbest bunch of bottom feeders to think they would get away with this.

I like, totally count. =P

Thing is, BQ, these kids were posting white hate everywhere, so it's probable in my mind that at least one or two of them had some racial issues going on.

If that attitude is not representative or typical of the Crips then that might be a great clue that they are indeed wannabes, as has been said.

If they were only pretending to be Crips and going about violently recruiting other kids to their fake gang, I'd imagine some people they'll meet in jail might surely object.

With a bit of luck, they will.

Stop personalizing the posts. Everyone gets to express their own opinion. If others think they can explain or clarify, that's fine. BUT telling others they are thinking or feeling incorrectly, is NOT fine.

Ive only heard about one of the guys having something a pic with black power on it on one of his SM sites.

If I can express my opinion then where did my post go? Just curious.

The shooter is the one with the black power on his fb. The youngest one is the one with the I hate 90% of white people and the knocking out 5 woods after trayvon court on his twitter...amongst lots of other things.

This is exactly what I was trying to get across. THESE three guys might have racial axes to grind (though i dont see it yet in this crime) but generally speaking, gangs do not (see all the reasons we gave above - its just not what they're about). So IME, I'd say these guys are posers, wannabes, whatever, but aren't affiliated with a gang.

There is no movement among gangs to come attack white folks, which is what it felt like people were afraid of. Just like any other crime organization (various versions of the mafia, for example), they are more a danger to themselves than to the public at large.

And yes, if these dudes are wannabes, there likely will be some other dudes in prison who will be glad to disabuse them of their aspirations lol.

Can we get off the "what makes a real gangsta" baloney? The way I see it, a real person with his whole life ahead of him was gunned down by three teenage thugs. I don't really care whether some people consider them genuine gangbangers or not when the painful reality is that they are cold-blooded killers.
