RaffertyLFP: The Free Press has heard clearing of courtrooms NOT due to security sweep - some other reason. [via Twitter]

If it was a security issue, the first person out in the US would be the judge. The baliff would make sure of that - it is their job.

I think legal manuvering here - and I am hoping that if MR is guilty, he has decided to cop to it and a trial won't be necessary.

Questions about why the delay in the #Rafferty trial? OPP officers blocking the windows and doors to courtroom.

HOWEVER:

CTV London ‏ @CTVLondon
Half an hour has passed and still explanation for clearing the courtrooms. No increased security visible.

I wonder where the lawyers and judge are? In chambers? Still not a reason to clear the courtroom though IMO. :waitasec:

They said they were still in the courtroom -- not the jury though

Well if this delay is due to some wrangling or protesting by the defence team already then this might be their way of protesting that this went straight to trial without a preliminary hearing. We might be in for a long haul here. :banghead:

I'm told that in the US, they would only clear the courtroom if the defendant was speaking, there were security issues, or there was a child witness (but all parties would have to agree, and apparently it's really rare).

What does an "in camera hearing" mean?

  • #79
In camera describes court cases (or portions thereof) that the public and press are not admitted to.

I don't imagine we are going to hear much today.

an "in camera" hearing is when they go into judges' chambers (at least in the us) . The court reporter also attends
