Silver Alert activated for 83-year-old Betty Counts

Prineville police seek public's help to find missing woman, 83 - KTVZ

On July 4th, 2021 at about 7:00 AM, Sgt. Wilson took a missing person report on a 83 year old female named Betty Counts. Betty's husband reported her as missing after she left their residence in Prineville on Saturday morning, July 3rd, after a minor argument. Earlier, she had mentioned possibly visiting a friend in Eugene Oregon, but prior to leaving she said she may visit her granddaughter in Kennewick, Washington. Betty had also mentioned visiting a family member in Montana. (It was reported Betty was not taking medications nor had she been diagnosed with Dementia, but does forget things sometimes and may have early onset of Dementia.)

While investigating this case, Sgt. Wilson spoke to the reporting party again, about two hours after taking the initial report. Sgt. Wilson learned the reporting party had spoken to Betty over the phone after he had reported her as missing. At that time, Betty reported she was in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho at some point, and got turned around while looking for fuel to return home. He encouraged her to call 911, but she didn't think she needed help. When he asked her for a landmark she said she saw a sign that said "Moscow this way." Since that phone call no one has heard from Betty.

After Betty was assigned as a missing person, we received a call from the Ephrata Police Department. They claimed to have received a 911 call from Betty on July 4th at about 1:03 AM. It was reported to them that she was in a white "fusion" in the US Bank parking lot and she was lost. She claimed she was trying to get home, but didn't know her address. Betty was offered a room to stay in for the evening, but she refused and just wanted to know how to get to I90. Officers reported she left the area headed south out of Ephrata.

We have had a 30-minute ping set up on Betty's phone, but her phone has been off for the majority of the day. Det. Vollmer is working with the FBI to try and navigate her path up to our last phone contact with Betty, and also working on tracking her financials to better concentrate our efforts in the areas she may be in. Betty is listed in LEDS/NCIC so if she is contacted again she will be taken in protective custody to be reunited with her family.

If you locate Betty or see her vehicle please call police immediately.

PPD Case #21000943, and case agents are Sgt. Wilson and Det. Vollmer. You can reach them by calling 541-447-4168, or by email at [email protected] or [email protected].

Yes, I'm worried about this sweet lady. I hope she's off on some grand adventure, but we all know that's unlikely. : (

Did you ever feel like you just want to get in a car and head out to search for someone? That's how this case makes me feel. Ten days missing - this poor lady (and dog). Her poor family must be beside themselves. Where are you Betty?

Yesssss! I have that feeling quite often, especially after "walking" around on Google Maps. :D I find myself saying things like, "I bet no one looked here" or "This is where he/she/they are. I just know it!".

Counts is described as 5-foot-6-inches tall, with gray hair and about 165 pounds. She was traveling with her dog, Max, a white Lhasa Apso. She hasn't been diagnosed with dementia and isn't taking medication, but she may have early symptoms of dementia.

I'm so concerned for this woman. I am not seeing any updates. Prayers for her and her family. I can't even imagine.

A search of her name on FB reveals posts from family that they are sharing as recent as last night. After all this time and the first article saying she was in Idaho, there's no telling where she might be. And the fact that she's not bought more gas since the 4th is concerning.

You're right. Betty not buying any gas is concerning. I'm really worried about this woman. I feel terrible for her family.

It's very troubling there hasn't been any news on this lovely lady. I was looking at a map of where I think her last contact point was (Coeur d' Alene). Looking at the Google map, it would seem there are little towns all along the routes in all directions, despite the rather remote terrain. As such, I can only speculate that she ran out of gas and is off road somewhere. This is so unsettling. Betty, where are you?

This situation is so terribly sad. I really feel for Betty's family and friends. I'm worried a woman of her age traveling alone could easily become a target.
I wonder if her dog is microchipped? That way if he/she were found perhaps the little dog would be scanned at a vet or shelter.

Hi everyone, long time no see. I’ve been away but trying to-come back. I hope y’all are safe and well.

“Since our last post, we have received a lot of citizen tips and possible sightings that various agencies assisted us on. We do not have any new information on Betty’s current location. What we do know is Betty was last seen and positively identified at a Plummer, Idaho Quick Stop, at 0708 am, on July 4th.

Betty was the only person in the car, didn’t seem distressed, and was riding with her white dog Max. She left that location headed South on Interstate 95.

The last phone ping we received was on July 4th at about 10:00 am near Troy Idaho, approximately 68 miles South/Southeast of Plummer.

We have not received any more credit card transactions since the fill-up in Plummer. We did receive possible/unconfirmed information that Betty may or may not have a small amount of cash in her possession.

We included a map to estimate how far Betty could have traveled on a full tank of fuel after leaving Plummer, Idaho. At a maximum fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon (highway), Betty could have driven 480 miles on one tank of fuel. At a minimum fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon, Betty could have traveled 360 miles. With the map included in this post, we estimated the maximum range (480 miles).

Thank you sweetie. I’m so happy to be back. I feel like I’ve been gone for so long. Real life and all that jazz, ya know…

I hardly know where to begin. I think I’ll try to find some of my old threads I started, catch up and update. I always feel a bit responsible for them and I’ve been lacking in that area. I’m gonna do better and prioritize my time, I think, to get back in the swing of posting. And trying to stay out of trouble…
