This NPR article provides some detail about her essay:
Novelist Who Penned 'How to Murder Your Husband' Essay Charged With Husband's Murder

IMO, the snippets of her essay quoted in the article don't appear as damning as I first expected, based on the headlines I've seen. It's the well worn trope of "truth is stranger than fiction" that is an internet site's clickable dream.

The "how-to's" in her essay sort of follow the basic structure of what you'd expect as the result of a writing prompt, and come across to me as more "light hearted" than indicative of murderous intent. Just MOO. IMO.

From the linked article (link above)
"As a romantic suspense writer, I spend a lot of time thinking about murder and, consequently, about police procedure," the post read. "After all, if the murder is supposed to set me free, I certainly don't want to spend any time in jail. And let me say clearly for the record, I don't like jumpsuits and orange isn't my color."

The essay described a range of possible motives for murdering a husband, ranging from avoiding the financial hit of a divorce to infidelity by a "lying, cheating 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬," and even the possibility that the wife is a professional contract killer.

It also weighed the pros and cons of different methods: "Guns — loud, messy, require some skill. ... Knives — really personal and close up. Blood everywhere. Eww."

She warned against committing a crime of passion: "Most of the time there is a trail that leads directly to you. Each type of murder leaves clues. A crime of passion does not look like a stranger was involved."

Romance Novelist Who Wrote The Wrong Husband, Then Allegedly Killed Spouse, Is Sued by Stepson

February 20, 2019

"An Oregon romance novelist who allegedly murdered her husband last June is being sued for $1.7 million by the slain man’s son.

The wrongful death lawsuit against Nancy Crampton-Brophy filed by her stepson Nathaniel Stillwater claims the novelist “murdered and/or conspired with others” in the death of his father, well-known chef Dan Brophy.

“He doesn’t have any doubts she is responsible,” Christine S. Mascal, the attorney for Stillwater, tells PEOPLE.

According to the lawsuit, which was filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court Tuesday, Stillwater, as a personal representative of his father’s estate, is asking for $200,000 for his father’s pain and suffering; $500,000 for losses; and $1 million for Stillwater’s loss of his father....

But, in September, in a twist befitting her own romantic mystery novels, Nancy was charged with murder in Dan’s death. Authorities allege she used a 9mm handgun to commit the crime.

However, authorities have not revealed a motive or evidence in the case and they have not disclosed details on how they believe the crime occurred.

Nancy has pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail at the Multnomah County jail..."

Details of murder case against romance writer should become public in 2 weeks, judge rules (with clip)

Apr 5, 2019

"A Multnomah County judge said Friday that in two weeks he will lift a protective order that has kept many details secret in the case against Nancy Crampton Brophy, the romance writer accused of murdering her husband at the Oregon Culinary Institute 10 months ago.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Walker denied the highly unusual request by Crampton Brophy’s attorney to keep the details sealed from public view....

Walker agreed that he didn’t have legal grounds to keep the seal in place. He said he’ll lift it April 19, the day Crampton Brophy is scheduled to appear in court to ask the judge to set a bail amount to allow her release from jail. She’s been held in jail with no bail since September.

Among the information scheduled for release: a probable cause affidavit that outlines the prosecution’s case against Crampton Brophy and a list of physical evidence collected by police who executed search warrants in the case...."
