Well, I guess I should say it was an assumption because both prosecutors, the court reporter and the judge looked her way. I'm sure both defense attorneys knew about it, so it wasn't them, and the prosecutor didn't look over his shoulder like it was someone in the gallery.

I assumed it was her, since I don’t think an attorney would do that.
The witness in question is in federal prison in Texas for fraud. Yep, birds of a feather hang together. Not just NB’s life of smoke and mirrors, but consider the whole 20+ years when she claimed to be married to DB. She even took his name and had an elaborate “origin story” of when she decided to marry him. He never married her until right before she killed him. Here’s the big fraud: she filed taxes all that time as though married. The penalties and taxes on that would run to hundreds of thousands of $$, and maybe jail time.

The tax info was in the opening statement of the defense. The fact there was no marriage was confirmed by DB’s mother and son.

Day 14. Defense is masterful at calling witnesses for the prosecution… One after the other. More tears at the terrible loss of the lovely DB.
Then, defense didn’t have enough witnesses on hand, so court had to end early. The judge is royally ticked.

So, consider the dimensions of NB not being married to DB.
No divorce was possible, so no “no fault” division of property.
If she just plain killed him, the house would have gone to DB’s son in the absence of a will. So, she had to get married and she had to get on that deed.

Now, the interesting thing about the deed….NB was on it for the first few years. DB appears to have taken her off. Or else, the mortgage was refinanced, and the bank decided NB was making no financial contribution to the household.
Also, subdividing the property would unlikely result in a net $$ gain. He told NB so way back when. So, all this defense line of a life plan to subdivide the property was bogus.
The finance expert witness was so scruffy looking, I’d not jump to the conclusion he was a reliable source for any info about money. I want my financial experts to look like they have some. Show me a tailored suit, a Wall Street (i.e. not Walmart) tie, and a good haircut, off the neck. Gotta be sharp and smart.
I guess defense couldn’t even round up a spiffed up insurance sales person to vouch that spending $16,000 per year on insurance when you’re behind on your mortgage is a smart plan.
If defense’s insurance case was remotely viable, they could simply have hired a local CFP to verify or called the CFP Board for an expert.
CFP = Certified Financial Planner. Many are fee-based, not commission-based, and would have had no problem offering up a credible, neutral, opinion on the insurance matter.
I used to be a CFP and insurance rep in OR. I also did stuff for the CFP board. That’s how I know this stuff….first hand.

Another factoid, just so we’re clear. NB’s wish for a condo or any housing other than DB’s home would have involved MORE $$$$, because of the price of real estate and rentals. Condos (evidently her goal) also have HOA fees that will escalate on you, just like a rental. This was certainly no “downsizing”!
The mortgage on DB’s home was only $250k or so, monthly payment around $1500. As of about 2002.

This trial has been blessed by two FABULOUS women police officers. Professional, extremely competent, and very articulate. Bravo to them.
The one defense called yesterday—Sarah Taylor—was masterful in not allowing defense to twist her words. They had called her because she put in a call from the scene that she heard footsteps “upstairs”. Defense wanted this to be some nefarious stranger lurking in the ceiling panels. In the next moment at the scene Taylor realized the footsteps were other police officers who had entered through a back door. Simple explanation. Taylor made sure the jury got this. Totally clear. Explained it, like, 5 different ways. Nuked a major defense point in, like, a minute.
Side note: Taylor is kinda petite, and she was almost swallowed up in police accoutrements, radios, cameras, bullet proof vest. All spiffed-up. FWIW I suppose you can’t but swagger in all that get up, she had the all-important swagger, too. Loved it.

What do you want to bet that prosecution took advantage of the day off trial to execute a search warrant to look for the missing Glock slide and barrel? I'm beginning to think everything about Nancy is a scam. We know the marriage was (they weren't married until right before the murder, even though she took DB's last name). The insurance polices were almost certainly a scam (she didn't tell the insurance companies about the existence of other policies). She called herself a writer, but all her books but 2 were dated the same year, and she really can't write very well. I wonder if she plagiarized...

LOL I turned on the live trial, saw and heard the woman in the witness box and thought it must be NB's sister. Word salad, voice tone, hurried speech, build, and face shape. Turns out, it's the clinical psychologist.
