It was just a case of wrong place at the wrong time for Hoffman.

It was just a case of wrong place at the wrong time for Hoffman.
That is a very touching letter from the shooter's parents.
It is so hard to imagine that he woke up one day and decided to slaughter at the school.
So so sad for everyone
Tammy Bogh, a close friend of the Padgett family, said she never imagined his life could take such a violent and tragic turn.
"If you knew him, this is not him. We're all shocked," Bogh said.
Bogh was once a babysitter for Jared and she has been close with his entire family for seven years.
She spoke with Jared's father and one of his sisters, who are both stunned and suffering, she said.
"He was the sweetest thing and that's pretty much what his dad said. 'My baby boy, he was only 15.' I don't know what happened to him, but something happened to him at that school," she said.
Bogh said Jared became quieter in the last couple years, and she remembered Jared's father saying he was having a rough time transitioning into high school.
"His dad had said he was having trouble in school," Bogh said.
"And that's what [Jared's father] said: 'Please tell them my baby boy wasn't a monster. Because he wasn't - he was a good kid,'" she said.

In the diary, Padgett detailed plans to kill the "sinners" at his school, police said.
In searching Jared's home, detectives found a journal in which he described a plan to kill classmates. A source close to the investigation said Padgett called some people "sinners,'' railing against those who smoked cigarettes or took the Lord's name in vain...
His parents divorced in 2011, with Kristina Padgett surrendering primary custody of the two minor children, Jared and one of his sisters, to Michael Padgett. Felecia Padgett said the divorce surprised the rest of the family.
"It was a shock to me," she said. She said the five siblings, including Jared, were furious with their mother for leaving and even stopped talking to her, at least for a bit. Felecia Padgett said she thinks Kristina Padgett may have left the family because she eventually found their lifestyle too restraining. "I don't think she agreed with that type of life," Felecia Padgett said.
..."I was at their house every day," said Felecia Padgett, 26. ...But last Thanksgiving something changed, she said. Jared was not his usual friendly self at a family celebration at his family's house. Instead, she said he was quiet and withdrawn. Her father, who often saw his nephew, noticed a change as well. "My dad told me that for the last couple of months, he had gotten kind of quiet," Felecia Padgett said. "They didn't know why. My dad's girlfriend would try to interact with him and he wouldn't respond."
... At home, Michael Padgett set high standards, expecting his sons to be strong, Felecia Padgett said. He didn't want his children to fall into a bad crowd, turn to partying or experiment with drugs. "My uncle was worried about his kids being influenced by the world," Felecia Padgett said. "He kept them sheltered."
Well this sinner is enjoying a smoke right now, and all I can say is this type of rigidity doesn't appear out of nowhere. Sounds like a rigid upbringing, with at least one rigid parent, in a religiously stifling home that apparently the mother wanted out of. Combined with a worship of military and weapons , bad combo.
Gonna finish my cigarette now.

"Everybody loved him," said Stephanie Fields, an aunt. "The Jared we knew and loved was not the Jared of Tuesday morning.
Here is the thing about these statements. He was that person, and is that person of Tuesday morning. He may have not always been, but something shifted and he changed. And I would bet my life, that it happened over a period of time. These shooters do not snap, they methodically plan and they simmer to a boil over time. Like Klebold and Harris, Padgett kept a journal. I'm sure whatever was in there was enlightening and disturbing.
There were signs. They were ignored or missed. People are obsessed with keeping up an image to others and refuse to see what is in front of them, especially if it doesn't fit that image.
Especially this family, from what I am reading about all of the rigidity and control. Mom may have left because of it, the rest were angry with her for it.
This kid was homicidal and suicidal. They missed the signs.

Post of the day!
Here's what I think - they saw him as normal because he was probably rigid in his thinking and behavior about the exact things they were - authority, religion, etc, and they approved of that. To them, he was just showing the beliefs and values they raised him with.

The children of authoritarian parents:
Tend to associate obedience and success with love.
Some children display more aggressive behavior outside the home.
Others may act fearful or overly shy around others.
Often have lower self-esteem.
Have difficulty in social situations.
However, they may lack self-discipline. Unlike children raised by authoritative parents, children raised by authoritarian parents are not encouraged to explore and act independently, so they never really learn how to set their own limits and personal standards.
he does not like it when people disagree with him.
I would say most dont! If we add up all we know about him at this point overall he was liked, did well in school, had interests etc. As a teenager he had a couple of instances of being pissed- at least at this point that is the image I get
His "Sinners" issue makes me think about that one comment that one student made about him.
You had to be careful what you said around him, you had to be respectful. (Paraphrase) I thought that was bizarre the first time I read it, especially when speaking of a 15 year old.
Too much rigidity is not good.
People who come from extremely rigid backgrounds tend to be more repressed in nature. I know Diane Downs, John Wayne Gacy, and Osama bin Laden came from extremely strict upbringing.

Totally agree.
So did Eric Harris.
So did Ivan Lopez.
Never heard of Ivan Lopez coming from a strict family. I have read that Eric Harris's father was quite strict. Speaking of that, Betty Broderick, Charles Whitman, John Haigh, H.H. Holmes, Albert Fish also came a from a strict and rigid family. I could imagine Lori Drew, Kayla Narey, and Susan Smith came from that same background.
