Lopez had a very strict Catholic upbringing. The rigidity came in the form of a strict observance and adherence as we can assume JP also experienced. From what has been reported and his target being "sinners".

Never heard of that. I know who he is. I have read that repression can intensify mental illness and/or personality disorders.

Broderick and Whitman had very strict Catholic upbringing. Bin Laden, Haigh, Holmes, and Fish came from some extreme fundamentalist background. I get that impression with Drew and Smith. They are severely repressed.

There should always be boundaries and rules, but if someone gets too carried away, it becomes authoritarian. Permissiveness is not any better and just as bad as they feel they can do anything they want.

Yup. Known as the two most problematic types of parenting . The worst is indifferent. There but not there. Emotionally unavailable.

I wonder if it is possible if one parent is authoritarian, while the other is permissive. Hitler's father was very authoritarian, while his mother was spoiling him.

Another article...

He loved guns,” said Arellano, 15. “He loved to go hunting with his parents. I always assumed he was just hunting animals. Not half of the student body.”

Padgett’s political bent also was in line with the NRA. His Facebook likes include groups like “Conservative American Military Veterans Against Barack Obama” and “We WILL NOT Be Disarmed.”

Also, on the same day as the Sandy Hook massacre, Padgett’s brother-in-law, Andrew Cooper, posted some snarky advice for Obama on Facebook.

...His parents were divorced and he never got over it. “He said his mom left him, didn’t care about him,” said 16-year-old classmate Chava Hernandez.

...Rispler, who sparked the lightning quick lockdown of the school and its 2,800 students, was home recovering with his wife and two kids.

“They just stitched him up,” brother-in-law Jeff Nelson told The Oregonian. “I don’t think any bones were hit. It’s a blessing.”.

This really describes in detail the police response. It also appears seniors were already out for the year, so none at school, and that there were about 200 student in the gym.

http://www.oregonlive.com/gresham/index.ssf/2014/06/oregon_school_shooting_active.html
Two Troutdale police officers stationed at the school had been in the central building and made their way into the gym building.
Armed with handguns, they entered through the west doors, searching the hallways for the shooter, looking for signs of a threat -- screams, calls for help, gunfire. They hadn't had time to get their rifles, stowed elsewhere on campus.

They reported a heavy gunpowder odor near the boys' locker room and .223-caliber casings in the hallway before they left through the north doors to meet other officers.

Anderson and Wendland, who also hadn't had time to change into his uniform and was in jeans and a polo shirt, rushed to the gym building. They stood outside the north doors.

"I need at least five guys by the front to make entry, couple of rifles at the very least,'' Wendland ordered, his resonant bass easy to decipher over the police radio.

He got four and sent them in. Two were the Troutdale school officers who had already been inside; the other two were Gresham police.

"They made entry and we immediately heard gunfire,'' Wendland told The Oregonian.

That story really showed how the training of the responders as well as of the multiple lock downs the kids have experienced helped in this situation.

Once again, a teacher is a hero.

I guess Americans are accepting this as the way of life here for some reason.

Heart breaking

'He was the most loving person that I've met': Community mourns Oregon school SHOOTER in emotional funeral as they look for answers about deadly rampage

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2659646/Oregon-teen-shooter-laid-rest-questions-remain.html

I'm a bit conflicted about this. I think it's good to point out the good in this kid and maybe it defrays some of the fury people have about kids turning to violence. Maybe it is not always good to have funerals and burial places being secretive. But I get a bit of a 'going overboard' feeling about it all along with the go fund me stuff - there is obviously a huge congregation, as well as the wider congregation, that could easily have paid funeral expenses without a public fundraiser. I honestly feel Jared got deeper and deeper into a mindset that was unhealthy. I do have to wonder if any one close to him is considering what led up to this and helped make it a reality.

Strommer said he had never known Jared to use drugs and he wasn’t like “a trench coat kid who lived in the basement,” just a normal kid.

Unlike some of his classmates who said Jared was obsessed with guns, Strommer said he wasn’t aware of that.

This is so ridiculous to me. This statement about "drugs" and Jared not being a "trench coat" kid "in the basement".

This headline from the article:
Mystery shrouds Jared Padgett's turn to violence

Mystery does not "shroud" what may have gone wrong with Jared. It's pretty clear to me. An unhidden, open, and obsessive relationship with guns and violence which can be found with almost every single school shooter. This is not a new pattern. His facebook told that story, as did almost every single one of his classmates.

Really?

That statement and the headline are just clueless.

Heh. Isn't the brother in law quoted in the article the same one who challenged Obama to put more guns in schools?

Someone needs to close his trap and think long and hard about any encouragement his views and opinions gave The murderer.

Evidently, he isn't even aware he mixing his metaphors! Argh.

I agree with you, this is not much of a mystery. And, unlike Adam who not that many were aware of his obsession, this kid had it splashed all over the place. What is up with these people surrounding him. My bet is also that there is more in the journal...

At least the article at your link says this...

Public records show Michael Padgett has been arrested twice for driving under the influence of intoxicants, the first in December 2001, when he went through diversion, and the most recent in June 2012.
Public records also show a total of 10 traffic infractions unrelated to his DUIIs over the past 21 years. They ranged from speeding violations to failure to wear his seat belt.
But exactly how did Jared get the guns? That information hasn’t been released. At least 60 investigators from state, federal and local agencies are working to piece together the events that led up to the shooting, said Lt. Joel Wendland of the Troutdale Police Department.
Investigators have not released information as to how Jared Padgett got access to the assault rifle and handgun he carried into the school.

I want to know why they haven't released any sure information about where and how he got the guns.

You and I both.

My guess is it isn't going to be received very well. And they need to be forthcoming, because the parents of Emilio are entitled to an answer.

The guy in the article also stated that Jared was "Just a normal kid". I Feel that this speaks to the core of the problem.

I guess all of the things that Jared embodied, exuded on his facebook, and espoused to his friends is seen as normal by some.

I don't see any of it as "normal". Obsession is not normal, especially when centered around guns and violence.

Agreed. And Even worse, coupled with the other obsessions with guns and violence.

The more I read about this kid (and its admittedly little) the more I get the feeling that he may have had anti-social tendencies or be of the psychopathic typology of rampage shooter.

I say that because what stands out to me the most is that nearly every single person interviewed states that they are stunned that Padgett was the shooter. You hear over and over again "He was so normal" "He was so social" "He seemed like such a good kid". Then you hear about his neatness, his preference for order. You hear about him being a model in his Mormon Church, to the point that he was made a Deacon at 12 and placed at the head of the quorum of his church at such a young age. Everything stellar.

This is something RARELY heard after the fact with a mass shoooter. Usually, you hear how odd and off they were, strange, troubled, not how "normal" they appeared.

Pychopaths or people with ASP tendencies are skilled at impression management. They can easily hide who they really are or what they truly feel and adeptly. This keeps jumping out at me about this kid. This amazing level of impression management.

Just my opinion and observation and feeling.

It really does not matter now, but I just wanted to say that all "worthy" LDS boys become Deacons at age 12. And all "worthy" LDS boys become Teachers at age 14. The process is automatic barring any worthiness issues.

I am rather surprised he was not a Teacher as he was 15 years old. In the LDS church, something as normal (well, normal for some) as masturbation can cause a boy to not progress to the next level of the Priesthood.

Wiki Snips:
Deacon (Latter Day Saints) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"At the age of twelve, young Latter-day Saint males are integrated into the Deacons' Quorum. Twelve year-olds that are deemed worthy by a Bishop are given the Aaronic Priesthood and ordained to the office of Deacon."

Teacher (Latter Day Saints) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Young men who reach the age of 14 are integrated into the Teachers Quorum. Those who are found worthy by their bishop (in an interview) are ordained in a similar manner as Deacons, except that the Aaronic Priesthood is not conferred upon them again if they have already received it as a Deacon."
