I wish they had left a note or something, if that was their (or the Kelly's) cave at one time.

**sigh**

That's exactly what I was thinking Taximom........no note left. AND who of the three made the HUGE 'Y" sign! James, don't think so.........maybe the two others before they left? I don't even know how many people it would take to make that in the! Freezing cold and would take lots of energy.......

We're back to square one. I'm so disappointed. Their poor families...Prayers to all of them.........and prayer's to the rescuers...

I hope we will be able to find out how many sets of footprints were found departing from that ice cave!
I hope they were all reunited!

Someone needs to invent a lightweight, bright-colored cloth or object that those lost in these conditions can use somehow to alert searchers. Something that radar could pick up, or something with GPS functioning. I can't believe there aren't better ways for those lost to communicate with searchers in this day and age where we can dock at the SpaceLab! :behindbar

Maybe there is something out there already that climbers use for emergencies and these climbers didn't have it?

Taximom, there are such things called "PLBs" (personal locator beacons), but for whatever reason these fellows didn't carry them. My guess would be they didn't want the extra weight. And, I've heard that many climbers don't think they are all that reliable.

IF it were me, I'd be carrying one! Easy for me to say though --- never having climbed before.

I figured there was already something out there. Then it should be mandatory or you are find if you are finally found alive and you didn't have one.

I guess my adrenaline is shot. I really hope they are found alive, but it seems that not much consideration is given by risk-climbers for potential search and rescue missions.

(ducking) I'm sure I'll get flak (sp) for this comment, but it's just my opinion. **sigh**

No need to duck from me, Taximom. I tend to agree with everything you said. I go from being just heartsick and hopeful to angry that these guys attempted this climb. I realize its their passion, but still --- it puts so many others lives at risk.
Besides worrying the dickens out of their families.

If they were my sons, when they were found - I'd hug and kiss them to pieces and then give them a butt-chewing for doing what they did!

**sigh** is right. Now Fox News is reporting that the ropes were not a 'signal' but were actually a climbing device. (IMO, just the fact it was left behind, IS some type of signal. Trying to keep the hope up!)

New snow cave located! BODY Inside! Deceased!

Taximom.......Ya' know I said the same thing early on.
I think if they can make nice slimline cell phones ....someone should be able to make one of these locators with lightweight material.
The climbing site is quite angry about the talk about these locators.........
One of the men said that "with what they weigh, at like 5lbs. it slows a climber down and in that case is a hinder to a good climb"........
Its just our common sence that tells us that......every single climber needs this.......no ifs, ands, or buts.........
I really think......in all these years.......and in the improvements in cell phones, that.......just why isn't there a nice, slimline, locator......weighing no more then my cell phone. It would be imperative to have one.
Everyone is so frustrated.......and .........all these ........what if's.......come up. But, it is so important.....to get this problem solved for all climbers.
So .........oh my........we might as well share the load about this together.
We want them back so bad.........and then we want this situation to end.
(taximom, liz, Me......together on this)
Oh too sad.........one found dead.....can we find the other two in a cave I hope

Just wanted to add that he was found in a second snow cave. They are not saying who it is yet.

  • #575
Interesting, this body was found in a second cave.

Maybe they WERE trying to get themselves down.

  • #576
Finding the body in a second cave makes you wonder if after the first climber died, the other two left him and tried to make it down.

  • #577
I can feel that we all are stunned..........
Lets think good thoughts and pray for the two others.
We still have a chance of two miracles........
Miracles do happen.....
I know our hearts are broken a bit........but, we have to think about
the chance to find the others...... Prayers are good...........pray.

I wonder why he would have left the first cave?

Maybe they were trying to move him further along with them.

The body is probably that of James, the injured climber. I wonder what happpend that he was injured. He called his family last Tuesday (?), rather disoriented, I believe and said the other two had gone on. A very sad outcome.

I wonder if the second snow cave was bigger--enough for three people, while the first one was only big enough for one. Perhaps the two who left came back, dug the bigger cave, moved James to it with them. When he died (if he is indeed the one that was found), they abandoned the cave and attempted a push down the mountain.
