OR - Kyron Horman, 7 yo Second grader, Portland, 4 June 2010 - Part #5

Regarding open houses and events at schools, the security is usually lax. I am not surprised by that at all. I am a photographer; and, I often go w/ my best friend to take photos of her kids at award programs and such. I do not have kids in that school; and, I have never been checked or asked to sign in or anything.

What surprised me is that during the noon news they were saying that Springfield (2 hours south of Portland) has the auto calling for absent kids and it doesn't go through until after 6 PM. It didn't sound like they planned on changing that either!

The principal of Skyline Elementary School also spoke at the news conference and said things are returning to normal.
"Yesterday was really hard. Teachers were distraught. Today, things are settling down a little," Principal Ben Keefer said.
Keefer also said attendance at the rural northwest Portland school is improving. On Tuesday, 38 students were reported absent, compared to 45 on Monday.

Today's presser is about half way down the page. It doesn't include the 'criminal investigation' part. I've been unable to find a video that includes it.

Raw: Skyline principal talks about Kyron

@00:30 towards the end of the video stream, a reporter asks the Principal about 'any strangers inside the school Friday morning' and just after that he says "Criminal Investigation" and the reporters start asking about adults being required to sign in and out, etc. and that's when Capt. Gates abruptly ends the P.C.

Unfortunately, I think we just learned more than in any other briefing.

I think so, too. I think this has been a criminal investigation almost from the beginning. I think the authorities are just "putting up with us" and going through the motions with the press conferences because they have to - not because they think it will help much.

It saddens me to think it and to write it, but I believe they are only seeking tips at this point in order to help them locate little Kyron's remains.

An odd thing to say. imo.

Here's why; the coastal area is closer, Hwy 26 goes from Portland to the coast, and central Or, is a mountain range away.
Does someone he knows live there in Central Oregon?
Lots of people from Southern Oregon know him, why not say that?
I'm just wondering, that all.

I have no idea. I didn't think about it that much while I was listening. Hmmm.

A friend of mine, is fb friends with a cousin of Kyron's and there is family in the Seattle/Tacoma area...not an implication, or an accusation, just some info.

I must admit this made me chuckle.
He was told not to discuss what it was by saying what it was.
He's either not real smart, or he wanted to tell what was really going on.
I wonder why, he possibly didn't agree with LE about not informing the public, and decided to go against them, and tell us anyway.

Whether he did it on purpose or not, I'm sure he got at the very least a lecture.
Will he be arrested, or fired?
I hate coverups.
moo

I confused!!! why would he be arrested or fired? I sure he not use to be in front of press.

I wanted to say something along these lines too, our school is completely indoor (all class rooms connected by halls, no reason to go outside except recess) and though there are rules in place that EVERY visitor, be they parents, friends, outside staff, photographers, anyone, the MUST sign in, however, it is so so easy to not sign in if it is busy for some event, I am sure a lot of people don't do it, when there is even a little crowd at the front desk, it is impossible to enforce, unfortunately.

So back to the black truck. Are we still thinking it's a credible reporting?

Yes, I think it is true that this truck driver almost collided with a black truck and momentarily glimpsed a child that resembles Kyron.

Unless he noted the license plate number, that information is unlikely to result in much help, unfortunately. There are lots of black trucks driving around with children in them.

SEARCH FINDS NO NEW CLUES, but are searching a more specific location....oh, boy....this doesn't sound good.

comment from this article

How long til they consider that he may have been abducted, and if so, are they going to expand their search to include Forest Park? Plenty of parking areas there, within a 5 minute drive of the school, where an abductor could do whatever dasterdly deed he/she had in mind and drop the boy off near a trail and do it all in relative obscurity.

Some comments on another site are driving me crazy!

Alot of comments are in regards to Kyrons "CSI" shirt!! Well, I for one HOPE Kyron watched alot of CSI programs with his step-mom... He may have learned alot from them!!

My son is also 7 , born one month after Kyron. He was been watching Greys Anatomy, ER, Dr. G Medical Examiner & any surgeries the learning channel offers... He LOVES Dr. G: Medical Examiner .... he knows his respiratory system, like the back of his hand ... his interest in this field has always been there (IMO). Yes, I am the one who had the channel on, he is the one to choose if he wants to sit and watch it, or go play instead. He also has had NO interest in cartoons...

As a parent, are we not supposed to nourish the childs natural interest??

My son WOULD NOT sit and watch cartoons at the age of 2-4 - he would only watch, as he calls them "doctor shows".

Should my son ever go missing, I am going to be put under the bus!!

Fantastic! Thank you so much.

Transcribed:

Reporter: Were there any strangers inside the school Friday morning?

Principal: You know I appreciate people wanting to ask questions about that day, and there's a ongoing criminal investigation, and I'm being asked not to provide details that would compromise that.

More transcription in a minute.

Prime News just said a student reported him by the door at 9am. Did i hear that right?

A possible explanation for the above:
The link for the Central Oregon news station was posted here as a source for the PC video.
That may have been a local slant added to the story, not a specific request from the Mult Co Sheriff.

I just watched & transcribed the video from this link. I don't 'see' the Sheriff cutting the principal off or hustling him from the podium (all 'editorial' judgments we posters are putting on neutral actions). Reporters start to ask the principal specific questions. He says, I won't answer specifics but if you want to speak in general.. the Sheriff then cuts things off, but I can see it as cutting the reporters and questions off, not the principal for saying 'criminal investigation'.

Reporter asks specific question about adults signing into the campus that day. etc etc

That item has been circulated, but not confirmed by LE.
Oddly enough, CNN is the source I trust least on this story. The Fox12 station seems to have grabbed it. KGW will have the most raw video. And, they have probably the best journalists, but Kyle Iboshi from KOIN seems to have been doing a good job too (KOIN just prepackages too much of their regular news). KATU usually does the best job with local news but aren't doing such a good job on this story.

IIRC, Gates wouldn't give specifics on that. So I guess we don't really know at this point.

I agree, Charleston Gal. I wonder if any RSO's in the area drive a black truck. I am sure the police are way ahead of me here and checking that out.

Maybe LE cut the principal off because of the signing in procedures, rather than the criminal investigation part.

After all, they have FBI profilers there. That implies "criminal" doesn't it?
