Family of missing man near Blue River Reservoir offering $10k reward

In addition to offering a reward, Sprenger's family is asking anyone willing to help with the search.

"I’m hoping this gets people out looking," Sprenger's mother Marge Brugman said Wednesday. "I don’t care who they are or if they go over the same area 10 times."

She added that the area of concern is from the Blue River Reservoir area to his residence near McKenzie Highway and that her son was an experienced mushroom picker.

There were no updates on the search as of Wednesday, other than it still is active, Lane County Sgt. Thomas Speldrich said.

Going mushroom picking? Experts share tips to stay safe as more disappear

According to investigators with the Lane County Sheriff's office, they see about 150 callouts for missing people every single year. And just in the past two months, they've seen 10 lost mushroom pickers.

In Lane County, search and rescue crews are looking for Shane Sprenger, 47, who went missing while picking mushrooms last week near the Blue River reservoir area. He told his family he lost his keys to his truck and needed a ride home. His family found his truck, but he hasn't been seen since.

Sgt. Tom Speldrich of the Lane County Sheriff's Office said wandering off of a trail is not uncommon when looking for fungi.

"To find those mushrooms, oftentimes you'll walk off of the main roads and off of the main trails and paths, and that can lead to danger," said Speldrich.

Shane is still missing. His mother and sister are still posting regularly in local Facebook groups. He is a very well known and loved local man.

Starting on the day the was reported missing, the Sheriff’s Office began searching the areas where Sprenger was believed to be. Searchers included K-9 teams, deputies, and Search and Rescue volunteers. As the days went on, they widened their search pattern and covered a lot more ground.

Those efforts have focused on the areas off of U.S. Forest Service Road 15, including the Saddle Dam. They also searched extensively behind the former Lazy Days Mobile Home Park and a location generated early on by a phone ping.

His family is offering a $50,000 cash reward leading to the missing man’s successful location and physical recovery. Anyone with information on Sprenger’s whereabouts should contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4150 and reference case number 21-6268.

Shane is still missing.

This case is not as straight forward as it seems. I don't think I can post additional information as a local, but there are local pages that are public where you can see posts from his mom and other family about a truer timeline, as well as his missing page. This is not a simple case of a mushroom picker getting lost in the woods. I don't believe he was picking mushrooms at all.

New reports indicated Sprenger was working at a job site near the Blue Sky Market on the day he went missing. It’s believed he went home at 10 a.m. for lunch at 51160 McKenzie Hwy. He was scheduled to meet a subcontractor at the job site after lunch but didn’t return. All his tools were found still plugged in and were outside in misting weather.

Case of missing man remains open

I tend to agree with you.

His family said Sprenger - a contractor who lost his home to the Holiday Farm Fire, and intended to rebuild - was working at a job site near McKenzie Bridge the day he disappeared.

"By numerous accounts, he returned to his home in Vida, Oregon, at 10 a.m. and hasn’t been seen since," according to his family. "His truck was located 2 days later near Blue River Reservoir by friends and family who reported Sprenger as a missing person the following day on Friday, November 5."

Sprenger's family added "it was previously reported that Sprenger was thought to be mushroom hunting, but it is now thought that he intended to return to work to meet with a subcontractor and continue his work as he left his tools plugged in at the site."

The family is offering a $50,000 reward leading to Sprenger's "successful location and physical recovery."
