I’ve recognized that, for the past several years, I feel a “deja vu” of sorts.

The vitriol and violence reminds me of the rise of white supremacist groups in the late 80s through mid 90s.

The “cleaning up” of appearances and intellectualizing of the hate-filed rhetoric. The sly twisting of history. The faux engagement targeted at youth. The recruitment.

The systematic and insidious villainization and dehumanization of “other.”

“According to the synagogue's website, Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers usually leads its Saturday service. In July, Myers wrote an essay, titled, "We Deserve Better," for the synagogue's website, which focuses on several issues, including gun control. Myers wrote:

"Despite continuous calls for sensible gun control and mental health care, our elected leaders in Washington knew that it would fade away in time. Unless there is a dramatic turnaround in the mid-term elections, I fear that that the status quo will remain unchanged, and school shootings will resume. I shouldn't have to include in my daily morning prayers that God should watch over my wife and daughter, both teachers, and keep them safe. Where are our leaders?"”

(Was Myers one of the victims?)

Pres. Trump says gun laws have "little to do" with outcome of shooting at Pittsburgh synagogue: "If they had protection inside, the results would have been far better. This is a dispute that will always exist I suspect." 'Multiple casualties,' 3 officers shot at Pittsburgh synagogue: Officials

What a sad joke.

There was security inside, correct?

The police were shot, correct?

More guns wouldn’t have stopped this from happening. There were people trained in firearm use and defense on-scene.

All of this is gospel truth. Every single word. And it’s important we really hear all of it and internalize it.

Does any of that have to do with this topic, or are you just venting?

“This is a developing story. Some things that get reported by the media will later turn out to be wrong. We will focus on reports from police officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene. We will update as the situation develops.“

(I am impressed by this media sensibility on the part of NPR during a situation unfolding. It reminds me of what @liltexans said yesterday re: Darnell’s Gray case when the media was misreporting facts, that she will refer directly to LE for information.)

Furthermore, on what planet do we live where it's ok to target anyone for terroristic purposes?

On what planet is it a nothing burger? When it happens?

A political intent? Hello?

Let's look at antisemitism.

Let's look at the other.

What does history tell us?

Do you even know history?

Oh well, it's just a tweet...

I believe I’ve found the shooter’s Facebook. It’s just chalk full of pro-NRA stuff but I haven’t found anything antisemitic so it’s only a possibility.

“We had services going on in the chapel when we heard a loud noise in the lobby area," Stephen Weiss, 60, told the Tribune-Review.

Recognizing the sounds as gun shots, Weiss said that he was able to escape through the sanctuary.

KDKA reported that officers confronted the suspect outside the synagogue, and three officers were wounded in a firefight. One of the officers was struck in the hand, according to dispatcher, but at least one reportedly had serious injuries.”

Did they name him?

NPR is just reiterating standard journalistic protocol in situations like this. They’re reminding readers what the role of journalists are — they’re not doing anything different or unprecedented.

To the contrary.

That said, I also appreciate the reminder that stories update as situations like these unfold. It’s the norm, not the exception.

“Michael Eisenberg, the past president of the Tree of Life Synagogue, told KDKA-TV that the synagogue has never had threats or security concerns

“I’ve always had a very watchful eye because of what’s going on in the current climate, with the mail bombings… our security was that nobody has ever tried.

“Because like most other religious places we have an open door.”

Eisenberg said that the synagogue installed new doors so that people could exit more quickly following advice from homeland security officials. He said at least one person was able to escape the building because of those doors.“

“During a standoff, the suspect spoke multiple times about killing Jews, police dispatchers said on the radio.

He surrendered to police around 11 a.m. Dispatchers said he had a pistol on his ankle and another in his waistband, and had been injured. KDKA reported that he came out crawling.“

This is an extremist act of domestic terrorism and very likely a hate crime, imo.

History repeating. A protest for every cause, as they say, but mired in hate.

Strange fruit.

Church bombings.

Attempted assassinations.

Hate crimes jump for fourth straight year in largest U.S. cities, study shows
