Philadelphia — Gunfire killed three people and wounded at least 11 others in one of downtown Philadelphia's most popular entertainment districts late Saturday night, authorities said.

Police officers were patrolling the area on South Street in downtown Philadelphia when they heard multiple gunshots and witnessed several suspects firing into a large crowd just before midnight, Police Inspector D. F. Pace said during a news conference.

An officer shot at one of the suspects from about 30 feet away, but it is unclear if the suspect was hit, Pace said.

"You can imagine there were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend, when this shooting broke out," Pace said.

Authorities have identified the three people who were killed in this weekend' mass casualty shooting that left nearly a dozen people injured in Philadelphia.
Gregory Jackson, 34, Alexis Quinn, 27, and a 22-year-old black man whose name was not released pending notifications, city police said. All were pronounced dead at hospitals.
Jackson was identified by those who know him as a boxer, "vital as ever," whose name in the ring was "Japan Jackson."

Outlaw said five guns were used by the shooters after a possible "physical altercation." One gunman was likely shot and wounded but escaped police, she said; another suspected gunman, who may have been involved in the physical altercation, is likely among the three people killed.

The other two victims are believed to be innocent bystanders, Outlaw said.

"Our hearts are heavy today with the passing of Kris Minners, a second-grade boys' resident advisor at Girard College and member of our union, yet another victim of senseless gun violence. Our thoughts are with Mr. Minners' family who woke up this morning missing someone at their breakfast table, his colleagues who will be without a friend, and with his students who will be without a mentor and a role model," said the union in a statement.

As a side note: that’s not a typo; Girard College is a boarding school for grade 1 to grade 12. Students receive a full scholarship covering tuition, boarding, and more. It has a very interesting history, especially on the estate side. Stephen Girard specified that the school serve only poor, white, male orphans and the current study body reflects the dismantling of those restrictions. I’m sure his second graders are absolutely devastated by his death.

“Police also issued an arrest warrant for a second man they are searching for in connection to the shooting. They have not revealed his identity but said he will be charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy, violation of the uniforms firearms act, possession of an instrument of crime, tampering of evidence and obstruction of justice.”
