PA PA - District Attorney Ray Gricar Mysteriously Disappeared - Bellefonte 15 April 2005 #18

  • #721
He was see with an unknown woman at the SoS. That is the so called "Mystery Woman."

DZ initially thought RFG was out for a "wild weekend." Buehner suggested checking motels in the area for female registrants, and comparing their license photos with the description of the Mystery Woman.
Wow. Thanks for that, JJ. I’ve forgotten so much about this case.

Did RG have a weapon as a DA?

  • #723
Why does she kill him? (messy, time consuming, etc.) And why does the hard drive wind up in the river? He takes it with him on his "date?" Was he known to step out with mystery women?
See my above post regarding the laptop (and drive). See my above post regarding what DZ and Buehner thought regarding a woman.

Did RG have a weapon as a DA?
No. According to his nephew, RFG did not like guns. He could have easily gotten a concealed carry permit, had he wanted one.

In terms of foul play, probably the most likely scenario was a tryst that went wrong.

Just watched Dateline about this case-
random thoughts: -- he would be close to 80 years old now!!!
IMO this case reflects foul play
I don't know if the alleged sighting with a woman is credible. People always report seeing missing people and it turns out not to be the missing person. I recall when Caylee Anthony was missing and found deceased- there were many many sightings of her which obviously could not have been true
I believe it was possible he was followed and pulled over by another vehicle: The other person got into Mr. Gricar's vehicle, smoked and maybe chatted with Mr. Gricar- then that person got Mr. Gricar to exit his vehicle ( under duress), and get into another vehicle where Mr. Gricar was killed. This person destroyed the computer- ripped out the hard drive. I say this because there were no signs of a struggle in Mr. Gricar's vehicle-- no blood. nothing evidentiary. I truly believe Mr. Gricar was murdered. Of course we will never know for sure. I don't see suicide.

Why would RFG have the laptop with him; he did not usually carry it.

The route RFG took was on a back road, with long, straight stretches. If he were followed, why didn't he see that person? It was a 50+ mile drive. Further, RFG was known to drive fast and was observed driving fast when he turned on Route 192; someone following him would have to match his speed, which would be another indicator.

It is next to impossible for RFG to have been followed from Bellefonte.

A tryst: It's not impossible that a dalliance be entirely unknown, but is it likely? I keep going back to how they would have arranged to meet. Would he have used a burner phone back then? I find that a bit unlikely, in that one has to plan ahead to buy a burner. I can see it in an ongoing relationship, but at the start of one? I think it's a bit of a stretch that he was planning to meet up with someone, but NEVER called or received a call from that person. Murder for hire, yes. I doubt that's the way that affairs happen, though.

Did they meet somewhere in person and then only ever talk in person? That's a bit hard to see, too, in this day and age.

Perhaps it was online? Maybe he had a "secret" account, and was meeting people that way. Now that's a possibility.

1. Yes, it could be unknown. They did have burner phones and it is possible, and even likely, that the person he was meeting was from Centre County; that is due to the map. They could meet face to face in public areas, in theory.

2. A hit man would have shown up at the house. No need to follow him.

Did I read somewhere that Ray was spotted the following day too (Sat)? In the same shop area..

  • #731
If that is correct, what area was he spotted in and what was he doing?
Alone?
Car in same spot as Fri?

At least three witnesses the owner of the SoS and two employees there, said they saw him on Saturday between 11:30 AM and noon.

I am not sure about the car.

  • #733
So if he was in the SoS Fri AND Sat..where did Ray go Fri night and why come back to the scene Sat? I assume if his car didn't move, he rode with someone Fri evening to somewhere..only to be brought back Sat.

  • #734
I would be hesitant to return to the SoS Saturday. He already knew when he didn't come home Fri evening Patty would be worried and LE notified. He took a risk Friday of being recognized by people in the shops , which he was, as well as his car. It's almost like he wanted to be seen..he certainly wasn't being discreet. The computer was even destroyed in the same general area. I would think it would be more clever to get rid of the computer in another state or a much further remote spot.

This is a crime we truly wish could be solved. Being a District Attorney is a big deal in Delaware. It carries a lot of prestige and a powerful position.

Thank you, so much, J.J. in Philadelphia for the information you have shared.

It is beyond perplexing that DE law enforcement didn’t solve this.

What i love wings wrote, is very possible. Foul play.
If he loved Patty and his daughter… disappearing or unfounded-suicide would be cruel. Ray did not seem like that type of person.

Our hearts go with all those so profoundly effected by this disappearance.

Thanks to those who continue to seek justice.

When he was married to EG, they had a fight. RFG left and went to Cleveland; he was gone at least overnight. No one called LE.
Tossing the laptop someplace else would indicate that he was likely there. RFG was not well known in Lewisburg, which was not in the same media market as State College.

While there is a Bellefonte in Delaware, RFG lived in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.

I agree w/your post. I didn’t watch the Dateline episode; however, the Final Argument podcast is well worth a listen, very insightful, and it gave info not known publicly.

Ive forgotten so much about this case so perhaps I should not even respond but will go ahead anyway. ;)

iirc, some of my thoughts...

What stood out for me is that the DA took the day off from work.
Why? Wonder if someone contacted him and asked to meet up to discuss a case...
Perhaps this person told the DA they wanted to disclose crucial info needed for a case being worked by DA.
So they meet up at the shops location.
It’s private at this point- but of course DA still brings his laptop to document the meeting w/said person(s).
If the woman sighting is credible, maybe she was part of the set up to put the foul play into motion...

Unfortunately, I dont think the truth will ever come to light.

Sadly, like you I believe Mr Gricar met with foul play and is no longer with us
But as you suggest, we will never know the truth.

In fairness, he took part of the day off on Thursday 4/14/05.

This was a laptop RFG was planning to erase or destroy, and one that did not have wi-fi.

There were no notes in the office (or at home) about any case or meeting.
