A source tells NBC10's LuAnn Cahn that Smith is a contracted exterminator. They say he was scheduled to work at Ketunuti's home last Thursday, January 17, but she canceled.

Smith showed up for the appointment anyway, according to that source, and the two of them went into the basement and had an argument over what was covered in the contract.

Dog didn't bark and isn't hurt - she's naked, waist down - hogtied and burned - that tips me more toward a familiar perp presently, boyfriend/ex boyfriend/crazy stalker-killer/ etc.

He/she is inside when Melissa gets home, locks the dog in a room, attacks her once she's in.. My guess is, she was taken to the basement right away either knocked out, maybe weapon- or terror-subdued, it's more private down there, less sound carrying.

At the risk of sounding plain crazy, I once asked a family member (in the name of crime solving! I swear to god) to hogtie me while I struggled. It's pretty damned difficult. Impossible, really. So I know the perp subdued her already when that happened. She's bound with tape no less, which is tricky -- it sticks together a lot (yes we tried various bindings too) -- so I'm guessing she was well and truly not moving when that happened. Gun at her head, knife at throat, or knocked out.

Even a passive dog is likely to become aggressive if their person is mishandled. Large dog is locked up somewhere for sure, and as I said, probably before she got home.

In any case,the perp was still in a high rage by the time Melissa was tied, which takes time and effort. Maybe he raped her, maybe he couldn't get it up. Then he kills her.

This perp wanted to punish her even more after that, or was just crazy high on drugs. I am leaning toward 'punish'. This seems a little too organised for crazy high crackhead violence.

Those are just some thoughts, anyways.

I hope they get this monster, and the green needle would be far too kind.

Yeah..

Ketunuti was found dead on Monday, burning in the basement of her house on Naudain Street in South Philadelphia.

... right. It took him four days "to snap"? This was a PLANNED murder. Cold and calculated. And I am betting the part about him burning her in a "panic" is a sloppy pile of BS too.

I'm really surprised there's no domestic violence.

And I am betting a fifty (sorry to be so graphic here... ) that he burned Melissa to hide semen or saliva left on her upper body.. He didn't bind her like that and strangle her, without getting a sick thrill from it. Not after four days of building up to the attack.

ETA: Another fifty says his lawyer will try to plead temporary insanity or something - since he "just snapped" and all.

Police say Jason Smith, 36, of Crescent Lane gave a statement laying out his involvement. He has been charged with murder and abuse of a corpse, said Capt. James Clark of the Philadelphia police homicide unit.

I agree with you Ausgirl. He was hiding something! I wondered if he was trying to cover up fingerprints that may have been on the belt ,he used to strangle her.

I feel so badly for her devastated friends & family. Her parents are trying to get here, some sort of red tape delay..

Saw the presser. The officer said:

"Jason T. Smith confessed to police that he killed her."

"No sexual assault."

"He stalked her all the way to her home."

They have surveillance video showing him entering her home. And an hour later, coming out.

"She let him in. She had an exterminator appointment with him on day he killed her."

"They got into an argument. That's when he struck her."
