My hope is that this is what he has been hearing from others to help him get through this. Along the same lines of “he/she was too good for this earth” and “god must have needed them for something bigger”. A bunch of blah but it helps to keep thoughts positive and heal, for some people.
When we lost my sister in a horrific way at a very young age, the family received a number of platitudes such as "Everything happens for a reason," etc., which were unintentionally very, very hurtful.
Fortunately, a friend recommended 'When Bad Things Happen to Good People' by Harold Kushner.
Additionally, there are several good articles on the web which cover both what NOT to say to someone who is grieving and what to say that will not bring unintended pain to the person.
JMO
