Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the 3800 block of Mount Pleasant Drive shortly before 11 p.m. for a report of a body found. When they arrived, they found 38-year-old Krystina Chambers suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest and head as well as 49-year-old Thurston Cooper suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Both victims were unresponsive and lying next to each other in a gully on the side of the road, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. Police also found three spent shell casings near their bodies. They were both pronounced dead at the scene at 11:12 p.m.

Police were called just before 11 p.m. when someone reported finding a dead body on the 3800 block of Mount Pleasant Drive, half a block from the historic Mount Pleasant Mansion, which has been closed to the public since 2023.

Police identified the two victims as Thurston Cooper, 49, of the 1500 block of Chew Avenue, and Krystina Chambers, 38, of the 500 block of Devereaux Avenue, said Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.

Cooper was shot in the head and Chambers was shot in both the head and chest, police told WPVI-TV and NBC10 Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the victims were shot “execution style,” according to CBS News.

"At this point, it appears they were both shot and killed execution style," he said, adding that it is “not only because they were lying next to each other.”

Small also said that medics and police discovered Chambers’ body next to Cooper’s in a gully by the road, CBS News reported. Three spent shell casings were also found nearby.

“It appears the shooter or shooters were standing very, very close to these two victims when the shots were fired, since the ballistic evidence was right there, just a few feet away,” he said

During Thursday’s press conference, police revealed that the suspects and victims had spoken inside Tellups Tavern on the 1300 block of West Olney Avenue earlier in the evening. Around 9:40 p.m. all four left the bar together and Cooper and Chambers were apparently looking for a ride before they were offered a ride by the suspects.

[...]

Police say they do not have anything ‘concrete’ when it comes to what the victims and suspects discussed in the bar, but say they believe there was some type of conflict that was resolved before they left the bar.

Please forgive my slightly OT post, but these murders are reminding me of a case where a man and woman with no known romantic relationship met up at a park and were shot and killed on a park bench. The murders I'm thinking of are still unsolved, I believe, and it was a popular case on the Crimes In The News board for years. Can anyone remember the victims names or any details about that case? Googling only comes up with this one.

This sounds familiar although I don’t think they were unknown to each other. I remember it being a man and woman and them reiterating that they were just friends. They were also found in a park. MOO
