People being detained and "exported" by ICE

"Arresting an international student at the University of Minnesota because of a DWI suggests an expansion of ICE authority, according to one immigration attorney.

The Department of Homeland Security told the Associated Press that the arrest followed the revocation of the student’s visa because of a past DWI offense and is not related to campus activism.

.... attorney David Wilson, who has represented other student visa holders but is not connected to this latest case. “This is an expansion that has not been recognized in the law.” "

Oh, I hate this! It so much reminds me of how people were rounded up by the nazis during the second world war. It is a great evil.
Indeed it is!
It reminds me of how the Japanese were rounded up and sent to US internment camps in WWII. Althought not like Nazi Germany, these were also in harsh places with few natural resources.
Yes, that was a terrible injustice. Anyone who has ever visited Manzanzar in California is aware of the terrible conditions.
However, because of Trump’s widespread attacks on federal employees, law firms, the CDC/NIH, press, etc, I think the comparison to Nazi Germany is more apt than the internment of Japanese during WWII in the U.S., although both are horrible.

"A wide majority of Americans –– 70% –– oppose impeaching federal judges who are slowing down President Donald Trump’s agenda as the idea continues to gain traction among Republicans in Congress, according to a poll released Thursday morning.

In addition, 83% say the president must obey US Supreme Court decisions, the Marquette Law School poll found. (That view holds across party lines, including 78% of Republicans, 82% of independents and 90% of Democrats.)

At the forefront has been US District Judge James Boasberg, who has blocked the Trump administration’s ability to use the Alien Enemies Act to quickly deport some migrants. Boasberg’s move last month led to Trump calling for his impeachment."

"Justice Department attorneys will appear before Judge James Boasberg on Thursday to make its case for why the Trump administration did not violate his orders halting the use of the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelans the government has accused of being part of a gang.

While other judges around the US have considered in recent months whether the government violated their orders in disputes over federal funding and transgender rights, Thursday’s hearing goes much further as it’s the first step in Boasberg potentially holding officials in contempt and possibly ordering sanctions."

This is the result of the hearing, so far ....

Boasberg said during a hearing Thursday that he’s still weighing what penalties he could impose if he does hold officials in contempt. But courts have broad power to issue fines or impose jail time on people who defy court orders. Boasberg could even try to order the administration to demand that El Salvador return the deportees to the United States.

Boasberg did not indicate which officials could be subject to contempt. But he said he believes the administration was attempting to avoid legal scrutiny when it sent planes full of Venezuelan nationals to El Salvador despite urgent legal efforts — and Boasberg’s own order — to halt any flights carrying people being deported under an unusual invocation of wartime authorities by Trump.

During Thursday’s 40-minute hearing, the judge grew increasingly irritated after receiving vague answers to his questions.

Boasberg could even try to order the administration to demand that El Salvador return the deportees to the United States.
I hope Judge Boasberg orders the return of the deportees and throws the book at everyone involved. As the judge figured out, the government was rushing these flights to beat his hearing, instead of slowing down and waiting to see what he’d say. The government KNEW what they were doing was illegal. For shame!

"Faith communities speak out on deportations, await Friday hearing on “protected areas” lawsuit.

On April 4, a judge in Washington, D.C. will hold an initial hearing in Mennonite Church USA v. DHS, a historic lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s rescission of a policy that protects certain areas – including houses of worship, schools, and hospitals – from ICE enforcement operations.
The suit was filed on behalf of over two dozen religious groups representing millions of Americans. Various iterations of a policy limiting ICE engagement in houses of worship and other protected areas has been in place since at least 1993.

Faith leaders and allies are gathering this evening in Washington, D.C. and around the country for a “Sensitive Locations, Sacred Spaces” interfaith prayer vigil. See more about the rescission of the protected areas memo here, and find a livestream of this evening’s vigil here.

The hearing comes as faith communities have continued to speak out in support of refugees and newcomers and in opposition to the administration’s increasingly indiscriminate immigration enforcement efforts. A new report estimates one out of every 12 U.S. Christians are vulnerable to deportation or have family members who are."

I received a Smart Traveller (govt) update today on travel to the US. It firmly emphasises ...

"Entry requirements are strict. US authorities have broad powers to decide if you're eligible to enter and may determine that you are inadmissible for any reason under US law. Check US entry, transit and exit requirements. Whether you're travelling on a visa or under the Visa Waiver Program, ensure you understand all relevant terms and conditions before attempting to enter the United States."

This is a new emphasis for Aussies, and I think this is in response to the things that are happening now at the US borders.

And now he’s in prison in El Salvador where he could very well be targeted by the same gangs he was fleeing. And they have no way to bring him back here. Right. SMH

Just a thought.

"Starting in 1934, it was illegal to criticize the Nazi government. Even telling a joke about Hitler was considered treachery. People in Nazi Germany could not say or write whatever they wanted."

This is where it all sums up for me.

The 14th Amendment, Section 1:
1743736484929.webp

Not only are individuals being "deported" without their guaranteed right to due process IAW the 14th ammendment to the Constitution, which the US Supreme Court itself has ruled:
The Fourteenth Amendment prohibits states from depriving any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. The Supreme Court has held that this protection extends to all natural persons (i.e., human beings), regardless of race, color, or citizenship.

But these individuals, in many cases, are not being "deported" at all to their home nations such as Venezuela without benefit of due process, but are being "exported" to an El Salvadorean, a different nation entirely, CECOT (Center for Terrorism Confinement), where some of them must face the reality that they will ever be released.

You are quite correct that this more closely resembles Nazi Germany and their deportations and exportations of the unconvicted and the innocent to 'other countries' for 'lock up', labour exploitation, experimentation and eventual deaths in millions of cases in extermination camps without due process.

Unconvicted of actual crimes, at the very least unavailed of their right to due process --- not deported to home, but exported to a foreign CECOT prison. And, even when this adinistartion admits "a mistake", but too bad we have no ability to get him back. This should be ringing alarm bells everywhere.

Who are they coming for next?

Shameful IMO.

I have NO respect for anyone who isn’t absolutely infuriated by these illegal exportations. There is no excuse for this. So don’t give me stupid excuses about crime by illegal immigrants, etc. Most of the crimes here on WS are by U.S. citizens. The government even said these people had not committed crimes here (except for crossing the border). Musk was an illegal immigrant, but the “right” color.

My heart goes out to the families of the ones who have been sent to this horrible prison. I can guess why the administration says they can’t bring them back. They’ve already paid El Salvador $6 million to keep them for a year. I’m sure there are no refunds. So whatever Judge B rules, the administration will ignore, causing a constitutional crisis.

And yes, who are they coming for next?

End rant.

I often think of victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants, and I think of the victims' families. Often referred to as Angel Moms or Angel Families. They have victim-advocacy organizations.

They are generally dismissed, disrespected, downplayed, or ignored by mainstream media. It's hard for me to find a news story about them that doesn't do that.

So it's good to see something being done about the problem of illegal immigration. The last few years have seen so many come in unchecked and unvetted.

IMO
That's odd to me, because I think it's exactly the opposite. That thousands of people are murdered every year in the US and they are nameless and faceless because their killers were homegrown. Killed by a parent? A friend? A spouse? Whatever. S*** happens. Yada yada. But killed by an illegal immigrant? The outrage is off the charts. Why? A killer is a killer is a killer. And I completely disagree with your interpretation that these unfortunate victims of illegal immigrants being disrespected and dismissed as a complete fiction. Prove it to me, with legitimate sources because I can't find any. And most of those victims that I can find were the victims of vehicular manslaughter not murder.

I have a feeling our rants are just beginning and will only get louder! IMO
