People being detained and "exported" by ICE

Seems to be some sort of "cleansing" programme going on in the US. I've actually gagged typing that, what's happening in the States is disturbing to say the very least. It's something akin to Nazi Germany. It's outrageous and frankly disgusting.

Moo, jmo and imo
The United States is now checking "ideology" at it's gates. And checking "ideology" within it's borders.

There seems to be a deliberate targetting of those whose ideology, or free speech (and I do NOT include "hate speech" in that 'free speech') that does not align with Felon Trumps.

Ideology that has now erased from official histories the deeds of blacks and other visibe minorities, women (of any colour), Military War heroes etc etc. officially being based upon "anti-DEI."

This is also being experienced for those whose political ideologies do not align with MAGA values or P2025. They are all called out as being "lefties and communists".

You are correct - this HAS all happened before. In Nazi Germany.

I'll also note today that all the books on the Holocaust have now been ordered removed from the US Nvala Academy as being "DEI" thus non-conforming with the new American ideology as the current administration espouses it to be.

Indeed, who are they coming for next? What other histories are they erasing and/demonizing and dehumanizing?

Immigrants - check
Holders of proper Visas - check
Students - check
Arts & Culture (Kennedy Center etc) - check
Libraries - check
The (Re-)Education system - check
Visible Minorities - check
Political Opponents - check
Judicial Opponents - check
Holocaust Literature - check
Control of free-market Economy - check

Ignoring the constitution; ignoring court orders ... ...

Exporting persons unconvicted of any crime to 3rd-nation prisons (for a price!!) and claiming that 'export' was a deport to their home nation.

Exporting people to unconvicted of any crime to 3rd-nation prisons (for a price!!) despite court orders to cease and desist.

Deporting indivduals to home nations where their lives are at immediate risk despite court orders stating that is not to happen.
...

As a veteran I will not stay silent. Not in my lifetime. I will not forget.

IMO.

Your post, @Vern, about books on the Holocaust and other “forbidden” subjects being removed from the U.S. Naval Academy made me think of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. The government donated the land for the museum and does provide some support, but most has been financed by donations, including the building.

When I visited in 2018, I was moved to see that there were also informative displays of groups targeted by Nazis in addition to Jews, such as Roma, Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals, political prisoners, and others who were persecuted by the Nazis and their collaborators. In fact, when I expressed interest in a particular group, I was handed several pages denoting where I could find each display. The museum is such a gift to the country. It’s a sacred space in which to remember and vow “Never Again!” I would be so angry if DOGE messes with it. But with Elon having Nazi sympathies I guess I should brace myself. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Your service and that of many other men and women (and animals) over the years is very much appreciated. ❤️ thank you.
It's a sad day to see a country annihilate itself. The US constitution no longer exists, Donald and Co have dismantled it. The bill of rights is a thing of the past, America should be in mourning for what they have lost and what they are becoming.
It's a country led by cowardly and ignorant people, who live in fear of the unknown or what they don't understand, those people leading that country are put there by people who themselves who are clearly displaying ignorance and fear.
The past should never be forgotten and most certainly not be erased, it happened, whether we like it or find it uncomfortable. It's a disservice to those millions of people throughout time to have their stories erased because people don't want to admit that terrible acts have been committed against others and its a disservice to the present and future generations. Worst of all, this is coming from a country that built its identity on millions of people who have moved there from different countries and cultures, it's a country that's prided itself on being the land of the free and the brave. There is nothing free about America anymore, and many are not acting bravely.

I wasn't sure if this article has been shared here yet, it's from yesterday's 60 Minutes episode.

But this is the part that really stood out to me and frankly, should be a headline on every single news outlet.

Border czar Tom Homan has said that immigration agents spent hours conducting rigorous checks on each of the men to confirm they are members of Tren de Aragua. But, after cross-referencing the internal documents with domestic and international court filings, news reports and arrest records, 60 Minutes could not find criminal records for 75% of the Venezuelans now sitting in prison in El Salvador.

They have been going on and on about how they will be deporting the "dangerous criminals terrorizing the country" but in reality, they are just targeting people based on their skin color and ethnicity and immediately detaining them and sending these non-criminals to the world's most dangerous prison with zero due process. It's horrific IMO.

And another thing is, some of these people (an estimated 8% of them, so far) are getting arrested while they are doing the right thing and regularly checking in with ICE, as they are meant to do.

For years, immigrants of all sorts with cases in process, pending appeals or parole, had been required to regularly check in with Ice officers.
And so long as they had not violated any regulations or committed any crimes, they were usually sent on their way with little issue.
Now, as the Trump administration pushes for the mass arrest and deportation of immigrants, these once routine check-ins have become increasingly fraught.

I have always been concerned by the involvement of government in the USHMM, in particular the potential for politicized impacts. It has been unthinkable to the original private donors, but in the event that the US government was ruled by indifferent or malevolent interests, the exhibits and mission could be tampered with. IMO, it should have been a private nonprofit.

As you noted, the museum has exhibits and displays about Roma, Serbs and other people targeted for extermination. My thought is that the Trump administration and DOGE will indeed tamper with the museum.

According to Jayapal’s statement, surveillance footage showed the woman create a noose and tie it around her neck – but no medical response occurred for nearly two hours.

Chief Justice John Roberts pauses order for Trump administration to return man mistakenly deported to El Salvador prison.

And another bit of DOJ skullduggery in this case ......

A Justice Department lawyer conceded in a court hearing that Abrego Garcia should not have been deported. Attorney General Pam Bondi later removed the lawyer, Erez Reuveni, from the case and placed him on leave.

Yes, because he conceded an error was made.
So transparency and honesty (to a small degree in this particular case) are not things valued anymore?

The hard fight to show they are right - even when they are WRONG - is really the way it is now, it seems.

This poor man's life could be at stake, and certainly the livelihood and well being of himself and his family is, but "we are right, he should be there". When he shouldn't be.

imo

The problem isn’t violent offenders being deported — a vast majority of Americans agree with that policy. The problem is that this administration is using that in order to abuse their power, and to harass and deport individuals who not only haven’t committed any violent offense; they haven’t committed any offense at all except for exercising their freedom of speech in a way that the Trump administration doesn’t like.

It’s also worth nothing that plenty of studies have shown that immigrants, legal or otherwise, are less likely to commit violent crimes than native citizens. They are not a group that is inherently more dangerous than anyone else in this country.

Is Illegal Immigration Linked to More or Less Crime? - FactCheck.org
That study you quoted is over 26 years old.

No, I wouldn't. She technically didn't either .... "she had joined the many thousands who gathered on the road outside the stadium where the funeral was held, but that she "did not attend the ceremony inside the stadium" Link

But, either way, I don't see how that makes a kidney transplant specialist and professor at Brown University a terrorist or a threat to the US. I think the US has more nazi sympathisers and other internal radicals that it should have more concerns about than a kidney transplant specialist. imo

Now the US has lost a kidney transplant specialist and Lebanon has gained one. A US loss, a Lebanese gain.

I think the US needs someone with logic behind these decisions. Like maybe a fair-minded judge.

That study you quoted is over 26 years old.

Here are a couple of more recent studies. And I am unable to see a STUDY that says otherwise.

A study with the most recent data available ....

The American Immigration Council compared crime data to demographic data from 1980 to 2022, the most recent data available.
The data showed that as the immigrant share of the population grew, the crime rate declined.
In 1980, immigrants made up 6.2 percent of the U.S. population, and the total crime rate was 5,900 crimes per 100,000 people.
By 2022, the share of immigrants had more than doubled, to 13.9 percent, while the total crime rate had dropped by 60.4 percent, to 2,335 crimes per 100,000 people. Specifically, the violent crime rate fell by 34.5 percent and the property crime rate fell by 63.3 percent.
Debunking the Myth of Immigrants and Crime

A study from 2014 ....

The results from fixed-effects regression models reveal that undocumented immigration does not increase violence.
Rather, the relationship between undocumented immigration and violent crime is generally negative, although not significant in all specifications.
Using supplemental models of victimization data and instrumental variable methods, we find little evidence that these results are due to decreased reporting or selective migration to avoid crime.
DOES UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION INCREASE VIOLENT CRIME?
