I've wondered why he chose the Netherlands to receive the wire transfer rather than Aruba. Any thoughts on that--anyone?

I don't think he'd been living in Aruba for years prior to this extortion plot. He likely didn't have a bank account there that the money could be transferred to. He was still a kid with no income when he left Aruba I believe. He was only there a couple of months hanging around after his father's death and funeral at the time this was happening so it's unlikely he would have set up an account there just for this transaction.

He probably did all his banking in the Netherlands. Especially if he did actually receive any money during his attempt at human trafficking in Thailand as a business. MOO.

: "Happy birthday man I hope you had a good day & remember how important family & friends are. I won't bother you today but send me some money through Western Union tomorrow. The only information of mine you is my name Joran van der Sloot, the country Peru & the city Lima. I need this man for my ticket back so d it for me. Take care & enjoy your b-day."

Is this normally all the informatin you need to wire money to someone?

This June 6 article contains a report plus an 11 min. TV interview with Stephany's father, which unfortunately is all in Spanish. I'll put it on the translation thread.

In the report, it says that his first inclination was to confront Joran in the border city where Joran would be transferred from Chili to Peru, but his son talked him out of it.

"Ricardo Flores then said reflectively: "I do not want to poison my family, I do not want my family to live with hate and I want my family to know that the Lord gave me a difficult test, but it is."

The businessman said he now is making instrument of the Lord and said he hoped his daughter's death serves some purpose. "We accept with great resignation and we will not have hate," he said."

At mark 8:43 in the video, he starts to break down and eventually does. It is just heart-breaking. The video ends with photos of Stephany from when she was a child until now.

My prays go out to this gracious family.

I don't believe they said, just that he had a new attorney. Sorry.

NG: Richard Hermann is saying nothing about Natalee will come into evidence, Joran will get 3-6 yrs. because it was an "impulsive act". Alex Sanchez says Americans should be concerned about the Peruvian justice system because the attorney who was there during the confession was acting for the police dept. Michael Griffin is saying the confession isn't important because LE has the "evidence".

Delusional imo. (the part about Joran getting only 3-6 yrs. - I think he'll get many more years than that - maybe even life.)

Van der Sloot's life worth $50 in Peruvian prison?

Last Update: 10:20 am

http://www.cbs42.com/content/localn...n-Peruvian-prison/VOSZZgihvkaLc9rwHZXlUQ.cspx

snipped:

But in this prison, you can get anything -- you can get women, drug, weapons, you can get money. For $50, someone will cut your throat. If the family of this young lady wanted to pay a prisoner there 50 or 100 bucks, they'd be standing in line to cut his throat."

Here's another article re: Joran and the 'hitman' Ospina. In it, it also states:

"Van der Sloot refused to be visited by a fellow on Sunday. Instead and agreed to be fed."

I looked up another translation for the Spanish word that was actually used for 'fellow' above ('compatriota') and it means 'compatriot'....IMO that means a Dutchman or Aruban. Very curious that he would refuse to see anyone!

Here's a current article I found regarding Dave Holloway in Aruba looking for answers about his daughter's disappearnce 5 yrs ago. Aruban authorities were scheduled to meet with him yesterday, but posponed it until today if you can believe that. Now that Joran's confessed to disposing of Natalee's body or at least knowing it's location. I'd be surprised if Dave got any more answers than he did five years ago but that's just my take on that situation.

Does that mean he could either eat or have a visitor? Or am I reading it wrong? Or maybe that means he is eating again. I read here that he was refusing to eat. Am I correct in my interpretation? tia

Would have been nice for the victims families if Joran could have committed this crime somewhere like Texas. That way he would either be getting the lethal injection in 10 years or serving LWOP after giving up Natallee Holloways remains. The part that would ruin that however would be if Joran claimed he dumped Holloways body in the ocean where it would likely never be found. The Holloways may not get much closure with that knowing how Joran is a constant liar. Unless he could provide physical contact with any remains I would rather see him put to death. Joran seems like the exact coward many murderers are that is petrified of his own death.

I doubt the presence of Trujillo has comforted Joran much. He's still a young man, used to traveling the world and leading an active life. When he was put into his cell and that realization that he has ruined his life hit him in the face you can bet he shed many tears. Prison is such an absolute culture shock that it almost makes me feel sorry for young people like Joran when I think about how awful their life is going to be. I'm a strong victims advocate though, and Joran has devastated two families. Joran could be considered lucky he isnt going to be excuted, and even worse may get out of prison at a somewhat young age.

That doesnt seem like much justice to me.

your idea of what prison is gonna be like in Peru for JVDS and mine are considerably different.

it could very well be that b4 its over for him he would have preferred a quick death...then again he might get a quick death

but a cushy prison job and fiefdom followed by work release I dont see in his future.

van der Sloot could face “Law Of The Donkey” if sent to Peru Prison

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Law Of The Donkey” Could be Applied to Joran van der Sloot

Joran van der Sloot, accused of killing a young Peruvian woman and who has long been the lead suspect in the disappearance of Natalie Holloway back in 2005, could be facing some severe jail time if convicted in the slaying of Stephany Flores Ramirez in his Lima hotel room.

"Severe" may be an understatement. The prisons in Peru are known to be among the most brutal in the world.

Here is one account of what happens to prisoners such as child molesters:

A neighbor of Cieneguilla suffered the worst shock which could have happened. His daughter, only two years old, was raped by a drug addict and drunk who during a party at the neighbor's house went to her room and raped her. The unfortunate was saved from being lynched by the locals, but it was reported and he went to Lurigancho. The case, incredibly, didn't appeared in the papers, and the rapist entered in prison with nobody knewing he was. The mother, hurt, because her daughter was unable to talk permanently because of the experience, went to Lurigancho and knelt before a 'daddy' ( which is like one of the bosses among the convicts). 'I want justice, no matter the price. " 'Do not kill him, make him suffer as he did to my daughter. " The lady gave, weekly, money hidden in fruit. For seven months, the damn was massacred and raped with sticks, iron bars and pepper that they put him in the rectum. Although the lady said not to kill him and only make him suffer just a night that had consumed a lot of weed and liquor, the daddy's assasins ran his hand and did it.

Joran could face the same fate. He is, without any doubt, the most hated person in Peru right now. The victim's father is a prominent Peruvian businessman and one time candidate for the Vice Presidency of that country.

The van der Sloot matter has attracted the attention of poker players and industry media like Gambling911.com because the young Dutchman was in Peru to watch the Latin American Poker Tour. He is also known to play poker online.

One Peruvian poker player defined "The Law of the Donkey" and believes it will be applied to van der Sloot should he ultimately be sentenced.

"The law of the donkey is basically about getting raped by a lot of prisoners during a lot of nights," the individual relayed.

I thought he was eating what the guards are eating instead of what prisoners are...maybe it has changed?
I am hoping they will tell him, "ok you tell where NH is, let us physically get her, if she is not in sea. And then we will take you to Aruba"...But NOT really take him.

I used three different translators on this article. The way I am reading it is that JVDS was refusing to eat at first, would not allow the hitman Trujillo to visit and decided to eat instead. But now they are playing cards and communicating.

Snipped from your link:

Trujillo and van der Sloot converses and in some moments they play the letters (cards), the specialty of the Dutch. They even joke. Trujillo says to him that I am an assassin and you psychotic one”, pointed out an informant of the penalty to The Commerce.
