My point in posting simple statements about HIV and AIDS was to discourage questions about Joran and AIDS. We do not know his HIV status, do we? But he does not appears to be sick or infected with any of the opportunistic diseases associated with AIDS. So I believe it would be more germane to discuss his HIV status. It seems much of the media use the word AIDS without knowing there is a difference between HIV and AIDS.

Thanks for your patience as I try to clarify. Many references can get very complex. I tried to make it simple. Below site is more simple

ITA. There's enough rumor and conspiracy theory surrounding the case already, plus the sources were totally unreliable. IMHO,we should drop the speculation.

July 4th - El Comercio - Joran van der Sloot will be up to three lawyers. Joseph Tacopina is one of his lawyers...

Article below (google translation).

The defense of the Netherlands comes this Friday at Lima. Among his legal representatives would be Joseph Tacopina, who was also attorney for Michael Jackson

The confessed murderer of the young Stephany Flores , Joran van der Sloot , will have up to three lawyers to his defense before facing trial in Spain for the crime of murder.

According to the newspaper "Perú.21, two of the defenders of the Netherlands would be foreign citizens and arrive in Lima on Friday to ensure the rights of his client.

WEIGHT DEFENSE
It was learned that among the lawyers who would arrive this week find Joseph Tacopina, who defended Van der Sloot in the case of the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway in Aruba, and who was also attorney for Michael Jackson.

Tacopina has questioned the evidence presented against the Netherlands and even argued that third person would be responsible for the killing of Flores. Also expressed its surprise that the body has been found in the room just three days after the crime.

"Joran van der Sloot has been falsely accused of murder. The fact is that it has a target on their back now and he is a usual suspect in quotation marks, "said the portal azcentral.com.

DO NOT SPEAK
The current champion of Van der Sloot, Maximum Highness, said the confessed murderer of Stephany Flores continued in silence to the holder of the Fourth Criminal Court of Lima, Carlos Morales Cordova.

Somebody's got some bucks to foot Joran's legal fees:

"The Dutchman Joran van der Sloot , the confessed murderer of the young Stephany Flores , will have up to three lawyers for his defense....to ensure the rights of [the] client. Two of them, of foreign origin, will arrive in Lima on Friday [the 9th] (translated erroneously in text as September...9th month).

Among the scholars who come to the country would be Joseph Tacopina."

The original story from peru21 -- quoted by elcomercio is here -- Abogados de Joran llegan este viernes

The article says this about Tacopina

"Thus the present defender informed into Van der Sloot, Altez Maximum, that indicated that the lawyers will arrive to guarantee that the rights of sponsored his are respected. Between the lawyers who would come to the country he would find Joseph Tacopina, who back defended years to the singer Michael Jackson."

Says to me that Altez has said that foreign lawyers will come on Friday and the media is speculating that one is Tacopina. I've read elsewhere he is not involved with this case. We shall see, but these translations are responsible for a lot of the misinfo that's coming out. IMO

Dear God! What a freakin' circus! :furious:

I called it re: Tacopina up thread. All I can say is he better watch his back in Peru. If Altez received death threats, he's sure to receive the same with his temperment. I don't think they're going to appreciate his particular style.

As to bribing the judges to acquit JVS. If he had killed an ordinary Peruvian citizen rather than the daughter of Ricardo Flores, this may be a possibility. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking the judges won't want to go up against Ricardo Flores in this case. IF JVS were to be acquited of this murder, he better have enough money to go into hiding and have major 24 hour protection for the rest of his life. Actually, on reflecting on that for a moment, maybe that would serve the ultimate justice rather than him being a self professed media star behind the protection of a prison cell.

Wow! I thought for sure, after the usual legal wrangling, Joran would get a fair trial and , LOL, be onto jail. Now I wonder. :(

It would seem that someone with BIG BUCK$ is taking care of Joran. This is NOT usual. There are MANY Dutch nationals in prison in Peru. Where were they when some of these people were rail roaded into the Peruvian prison?

It seems, to me and IMHO, that there are, as we used to say during the Hollway case, 'POWERS THAT BE' may be getting nervous. Joran is a loose canon. He knows THINGS.

All of what has been filed to date is the usual defense bs type thing. Even filing charges against his first lawyer, LOL, what a joke! First he files to withdraw his confession because it was made with a 'court appointed attorney.' When that didn't work because they found out it was NOT a court appointed attorney, he sues because it was NOT. :croc:

Now he thinks he can beat the system by bringing in high flying attorneys from out of the country. I don't know if it's gonna work, but it MAY. OTOH, he's not going to have a 'jury trial' per se, it's just a panel of three judges, IIRCC.

Who knows what will happen now?:banghead:

I do think one thing though. IF it starts looking like he may get away with THIS MURDER, he might get himself a few body guards inside those walls of Castro Castro.

Just sayin'

I can see Tacopina and Bert de Rooij trying to pay off a Judge with the monies collected from interviews/pics/silly diaries, however...one of the Judges is an "anti-corruption" Judge and as you said, Stepheny comes from a family that is highly respected.
Why would those clowns want a murderer running free is beyond my wildest dreams. He disappeared one and brutally murdered another and he has got to pay the price finally. If all else fails, the FBI want his sorry azz for 50 years. The Aruba system has many loopholes for one such as Joran, and Peru doesn't...Joran doesn't have his daddy there with info on others that can help him circumvent the system.
Considering the two systems (Aruba and Peru) I would certainly feel much safer vacationing in Peru than Aruba, knowing that if an offense was committed against me would be taken seriously and not with a gesture of...go to Senor Frogs and wait for ladies night and she might just show up.:banghead:

Facing trial in SPAIN?????????????????? How did Spain get into the picture?????
I don't know how "Spain" got into the Google translation. In this paragraph, Spain, or "Espana" isn't mentioned.

"El asesino confeso de la joven Stephany Flores, Joran van der Sloot, contará hasta con tres abogados para su defensa ante el juicio que afronta en nuestro país por el crimen de homicidio."

Basically it says the confessed killer of young Stephany Flores, Joran van der Sloot, will count on three defense attorneys for the crime of homicide he faces in our country. (my translation) :)

There's probably lots to cover up. When Joran's father worked as a lawyer for the government, he said himself that rather than prosecuting (where one doesn't learn anything) he tries to reach comprimises. IMHO he has seen alot of corruption within the government and may possibly even have used that against people to aid him with Joran's case. IMHO. I think there is fear that Joran will spill too much even if his people now say one can't believe a word of Joran's.

It puts a price on his testimony: Van der Sloot requested $ 1 million to give an interview

It appears that Joran van der Sloot is not worried about the charges against him in the murder of Stephany Flores and the disappearance of American Natalee Holloway, and seeks to profit from prison.

Site reported Thaindian.com , the Dutchman is willing to disclose details of the circumstances under which Flores was killed and the case of Holloway , who disappeared five years ago in Aruba.

"I could exercise the power of money to buy things, the willingness of other prisoners and even some officials within the detention center," he said.

From the Thiandian.com site:

Sloot contacted the media from jail in the Castro Castro prison in Peru and asked for the amount to tell on-camera whether he had murdered the two girls Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores.

This is getting so beyond absurd that it's *almost* laughable. But I do enjoy them referring to JVS as "it".

OMG this creep is showing the world that he is the "lowest of the LOW"

:curses::curses::puke::puke:

IMHO I think it's time (actually past time) that he is treated like such a "high" profile case and finally treated like the rest of the population (whereby most have done far less). It's time to experience the real GP and his defense can visit him there as well. Again, IMHO.

He *might* be able to get what is the equivalent of pro hac vice (pro-hock-vee-chee) status to represent JVS, which means 'for this one occasion.' That's how high profile attorneys run around the nation defending the likes of Michael Jackson, Charlie Sheen, O.J., etc.

Van der Sloot files suit against initial lawyer

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hP65mkhJDnoedFlSx7Qa2IAc18gAD9GNT9200

From this link:

AP) – 36 minutes ago

LIMA, Peru — Joran van der Sloot has sued the lawyer who represented him during a police interrogation on the day that authorities say the Dutchman confessed to killing a Peruvian woman, his current attorney said Saturday.

Maximo Altez told The Associated Press he filed suit Friday charging attorney Luz Romero Chinchay with misrepresentation, abuse of authority and conspiracy to commit a crime. Altez said the initial lawyer "pretended to be a public advocate when he is actually a private attorney."

JVDS was returned to Lima on Sat., June 5 and was assigned a public defender during his questioning. But she called it off, since Joran was too tired from his 17 hr. drive from the Chilean border.

When she returned on Mon., June 7, the LE told her JVDS had another attorney. JVDS gave his signed confession late on Mon.

This report is from Sun., June 6 (3:16 pm):

"The Dutch Consulate is now involved in the case and has volunteered a defense attorney for van der Sloot, according to Carlos Neyra, a spokesman for the Peruvian Investigative Police."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/05/peru.murder.case/index.html?hpt=T2

If this is true, I don't think Joran's lawsuit will get very far and I doubt if the Dutch Embassy will lend him any more support. At least, I hope that's the case!!! :praying:

Added: Just found this article, also from CNN on Sun., June 6, but later in the day (9:39 pm):

"Neyra added that van der Sloot now has a lawyer. The Netherlands Embassy says it is working with local authorities in the case, but it is not paying for a defense attorney."

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/06/06/peru.murder.case/index.html

Guess there are just no simple answers in this case...everything has its own little twist!!!
