The Kalpoes have fought deposition by McGraw's attorneys for three years. They continue to come up with excuses to avoid it.

Hi, 3doglady. This is a turf war: The well-heeled McGraw lawyers are insisting that the Kalpoes, who work to make a living, appear for the depositions in the United States, rather than where they live. The Kalpoes made visa applications that were turned down because they hadn't been translated. When I spoke with a successful lawyer friend about these events, he said, "It's what corporate lawyers do with civil suits; they try to starve out the plaintives."

If the Kalpoes wanted to completely avoid depositions, they could just drop the suit. They could do that in an Aruba minute.

OK, I guess I'm confused on the order of events. I thought he was already in South America when the "extortion" :waitasec: happened. If not, my guess is that they were not prepared to arrest him at that time but were waiting for something else (like the info he'd promised to provide) and, of course, had no way of knowing he would be committing another murder in the meantime.

Extortion for purposes of this law is defined as follows: The term “extortion” means the obtaining of property from another, with his consent, induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear, or under color of official right.

The US Federal Complaint:

Joran was at home, Netherlands, May 10, when this action occurred. Or so as we know.

Sorry but all of the reports are really askew with timelines, information of any kind. This is the quickest and shortest Federal filing I have ever seen. (Other than a one line addendum to a PSI.)

Thanks for bringing over that link, I missed it when originally posted.

Very interesting this is the first I heard of this:

Despite the fact that the news stated that Van der Sloot and Flores were noted going alone to his hotel room, the reporter mentioned, "They are looking for another guy who was with him who they saw on the hotel security video."

Interesting. So who is this other guy and why is there no international manhunt for him?

SoCalSleuth - I lived there, I traveled there, I know what it is like from personal experience and I have my opinion. As a travel agent I could bring you up a list of travel advisories for many countries including Fiji, Thailand, Bali, US, UK and on and on. It is hard to explain travel and danger or lack thereof to people who have never traveled. The world can be a dangerous place no matter where you go.

I agree with you on that! However, I am a well-seasoned traveler, have lived in three foreign countries and even walked across 3 west African countries with a friend so I am no stranger to traveling or the dangers lurking everywhere. That said, the travel advisories issued are usually spot on.

Thank-you darnudes, that was interesting. Do they have a religious belief that a body should be buried soon after found. A statement from his father says:

"Flores, 48, buried his daughter Thursday but said he expected her to be exhumed so that DNA tests can be performed."

I wondered about the funeral being so soon.

Mostly Peruvians are Catholic, so that could explain it. I'm not Catholic and don't know anything about their practices. Sorry Church of England here.

I found that interesting, too. It could also be nothing more than a rumor going around in the local news media. In the Olympian article in this thread, her father continues to talk of the video evidence of Stephany & JVS walking to the hotel, no mention of anyone else. Hopefully the police will release more information when formal charges are filed.

WHAT? They buried the victim before gathering evidence? I've been curious, and a little worried, about Peru's investigative and forensic procedures. Now I'm really worried. Unbelievable.

I think this may just be irresponsible reporting on this guy's part. Per the writer, a reporter told him this was the case--total hearsay with no confirmation from the police and is not being reported. If true, why hasn't the reporter that told him reported it?

Can't agree there, they are only advisories. I traveled Egypt when all those tourists were killed at the temple, I was perfectly safe, they were not. Wrong place wrong time. Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread so I won't discuss it anymore here.

From this article:

Flores, 48, buried his daughter Thursday but said he expected her to be exhumed so that DNA tests can be performed. "Under the fingernails of my daughter there are traces, evidence, that's why they didn't permit her cremation," he said. Dr. Tejada confirmed that valuable evidence could be found under the girl's fingernails.

I'm wondering why they didn't get what they need to perform the DNA test before she was buried??

So sad to read how her mama 'stares into oblivion'.

No, we don't have any rules about quick burials or anything like that. Within a week or so is about usual.

Catholic's don't have a requirement to be buried within a certain amount of time. The Jewish faith does however, I believe it's within 24 hours, so maybe they are Jewish.

That is scary about the samples of DNA. Lord, let her Dad just not know they have them.

I'm right there with you Charleston girl.

I remember when Princess Diana died, Dodie was buried right away, like within 24 hrs, and if I recall correctly it had something to do with a belief a body wouldn't be reincarnated, or saved. Maybe the same here.

Whatever their laws are I do have faith this is the end for Joran. We need to keep to keep the faith....right?

Netherlands Embassy will not pay for a lawyer to Joran van der Sloot

Sources of the Netherlands Embassy in Peru indicated that the case starring their fellow citizen was a "terrible shock" to their country.

diplomatic spokesmen indicated that "we deeply regret what has happened and the only suspect is a terrible shock for the Holland community."

"Our thoughts are with the family of the victim," said embassy spokesman, who declined to be identified.

Ensure his HEALTH
In this regard, the spokesperson assured that the Embassy will not pay for the defense of Joran van der Sloot, and that representatives of the Consulate will visit him in prison to ensure his health.

"The legal defense costs would be assumed by him," said the source of the Netherlands Embassy. He said his country had never gone through a similar situation.

Two representatives of the Netherlands Consulate in Chile visited his compatriot when he was detained in Santiago .

I don't understand why the scrapings weren't done at autopsy.

I'm beginning to think the father is exhausted and in shock.
Also, not accustomed to speaking English.
