3 page article:

Van der Sloot was represented by a state-appointed lawyer during Saturday's questioning.

Until he hires his own counsel, "the guys prosecuting him will decide which attorney he's going to get," van der Sloot's U.S. attorney, Joseph Tacopina, told the AP,

Tacopina said the suspect's family "is trying to find competent counsel."

Dutch Embassy chief consular officer Angela Lowe said her government was providing van der Sloot with "regular consular assistance, which means an occasional consular visit, and we will make sure he is being treated decently, just like any other inmate."

For whoever cares, Steph Watts used to work for FoxNews, he was a 'producer' for Greta's show for some time. He was involved with the Baden autopsy on Drew Peterson's 3rd wife, he went to Mexico with Mark Fuhrman to look for that marine from Florida, who killed his wife. I forget all the stories he was involved with. It seems that FoxNews, especially at that time, was very busy inserting themselves in the stories.

I heard last night that JVDS and Stephany sat in her car for 45 mins before going into the hotel too. Then why walk?

I have read 2 accounts of a tennis racket - and a baseball bat...the reporters can't seem to get it right. However, JVDS has a long "duffel" bag with him, that could have easily held the bat, but the tennis racket was found in the room.

Purely speculating here - but if she was drugged, she may not have wanted to drive. He could have said "hey, it's just a short walk, the air may be good for you". Moving will make the drug run thru the system quicker than just sitting (ever try to get up after having a few too many). He may not (at the time) wanted to drive her car -- wanting to keep him and the car as far away as possible. Easier to find, ya know.

Anyway - just thinking out loud.

hello...I haven't been here at websleuths in years...but this case brought me back to see what you great minds were thinking!

Just found a new article....translation from Dutch is very choppy. I think it says Joran claims he did not know she was dead when he left.

http://translate.google.com/transla...&hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&rlz=1I7ADFA_en

Granted the translation sucks, but I'm thinking he's saying JVDS doesn't know a thing about it. You know, a woman just happens to end up dead and he's the last to see her alive. AGAIN!! Darn the luck.

Several people have responded to this post, and I appreciate that everyone has the right to express their own opinion about Joran's recent arrest and any possible involvement he might have had in the Stephany Flores murder or the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. I don't know what to believe in either case because I don't feel that we have enough information about what involvement Joran had or didn't have in both instances.

That said, I feel that Joran's mother is owed some compassion and respect during this trying time. Surely, most of you know that Anita Van Der Sloot was widowed in February of this year when her husband passed away suddenly. She is still grieving the loss of her spouse and now has to deal with this almost unthinkable situation. Mrs. Van Der Sloot needs prayers to help her deal with this family tragedy rather than criticism or judgment. jmo

Sorry if you take this post wrong.

First if I was Joran, my parents would have turned me in. Why, because they have a conscious.

While the case against Joran is circumstantial at this point, they have a great deal of evidence that is being processed. They have already released the fact that he is seen at several locations, with the girl who was murdered. They have video evidence that he went to his hotel room with the girl and that they spent a great deal of time together. They have evidence that she may have spent the night with him, because he bought and brought back two cups of coffee to the room. They have a video of him leaving. They do not have any video evidence that she left the hotel room.

After he left the hotel room, he cut and dyed his hair and tried to leave the country. If the DNA evidence pans out this young man is going to be spending the rest of his life in hell.

That said, I do fill sorry for his mother and family. I cannot believe that a son would put his mother and family through something like this. Joran has not had to pay for anything he has ever done and this time money and family connections are not going to save him.

I feel very sorry for his grieving mother and cannot believe that her son put her through this.

And I also noticed the coffeemaker on the table in the video of them walking by the front desk. I agree, it's staged. MOO

I have stayed in 15+ hotels over the last eight years and I have only used the coffee maker once in my room. All of the other times I went out for coffee and brought it back to the room.

Well said James Vic! :)

I read an article that stated he was teary eyed as they brought him back to Peru. When I watch that video I did not seem him teary eyed, he looked like he had his normal smirk? Did anyone see him looking sad and teary?

I'm not believing for one second that he turned himself in. I'm pretty sure his makeover with the shaved, orange hair wasn't in anticipation of a mug shot.

The hair color reminded me of Scott Peterson's when he was arrested in La Jolla.

I basically saw the same thing you did. MOO

On one of the threads (I may have imagined it), I believe someone posted an old copy of his passport. For his age, he had traveled widely.

Yes, ma'am... ;) I did see the copy of his passport. I think I've spent the entire weekend reading these threads and trying to catch up! :)

I'm not as young as he is but my passport looks quite similar and I have a large collection of foreign money (treasure we call it) that we always bring back as one of our souvenirs.

My point though was we have heard of his escapades in Thailand, but not in Bolivia or Cambodia. So if he has been to both of these places, and recently, then perhaps those countries should check for any recent unsolved crimes against young girls.

No more casinos, no more drinks, no more ladies -- you made your bed, and now you're going to have to lie in it. Oh that's right - no bed for you!

They sleep with 60/70 people in one cell, you don't have privacy, everywhere you see rats, cockroaches.

You have to pay for the food and the water, and the food is realy realy bad: Rotten fishheads with some unknown old vegetables in soup.

There was talk about investigating other missing persons in places where Joran visited. Does anyone know if that is in the process of happening?

His DNA should be sent world wide to compare to DNA samples from every unsolved case in the world.

I doubt that there are just two. He is too confident to have only done this twice.

I haven't had time to catch up with part of the previous thread, or this thread, and didn't know if anyone has addressed these pictures. These are two of the pictures taken of JVS when he arrived in Peru and was paraded before reporters. The first thing I noticed was what appears to be an injury to the left side of JVS's head (JVS's right side) at the temple area. I'm wondering if there had already been some interrogation?

Same here. A few years back I opened up a coffee pot at and Embassy Suites and there was a plant growing in the part where you pour the water in. Yes, a plant lol. Apparently some sort of seeds had sprouted. :waitasec:

I also go out for coffee and often bring back two for myself, so I didn't find that odd either.

For someone from a prominent family and getting a $50,000 a year allowance to gamble, he sure seems to hang around and out at seedy places. Cheap hostels and hotels, etc. His appearance and clothing doesn't show any prominent influence either.

Locked-Up Abroad on National Geographic Channel

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/locked-up-abroad/3805/Overview

I remember watching this and it sucked for the guy and he really did not do anything. I think that he is still living in Peru waiting for the paperwork to just go through.

I do not know if this episode is available on Netflix or Hulu; however, it has been on National Geographic channel several times.

Here is my opinion on the 2 coffees...

I believe she was already dead...when he left for the 2 coffees....

Reason...>>>If she had been alive and well...WHEN he left...she COULD HAVE changed her mind..and left the hotel ..after he left...

After all...Didn't he invite her there...for a purpose/reason???

Would he WANT her to STAY in the room...and HIMSELF..go get the coffee for them..on the chance she MIGHT leave??? and his purpose/reason would not happen?

IF HE ALREADY ...HAD/TOOK...what he wanted from her...it would be of no concern of his..if..while he was gone from the room...AND SHE WAS TO LEAVE....(which didn't happen)
SOOOO....I feel she was ALREADY dead..when he LEFT THE ROOM...FOR THE COFFEES.
for an alibi?..I don't see...at this point...any other reason....for the coffees
all in my own opinion..

Yes, would love to see the video tape of his purchases at the grocery store; plus the time vs the time of video at the hotel. I think 45 minutes would be a bit long for just purchasing coffee and a loaf of bread.
At first it was said he purchased the 2 cups of coffee from a Mini Mart in a gas station, then I heard it was from a Wong Super Market, so I'm not sure. I googled and found a Wong in the corner of Av. Benavides and Av. Republica de Panama (see map below).

Hotel Tac is located in Republica de Panama 616, Miraflores, and according to Google map, that would be really close to the corner of Republica de Panama and Av. Angamos Este (see map).

A) Hotel Tac = Av. Republica de Panama 616, Miraflores
B) Supermercado Wong = Av. Alfredo Benavides and Av. Republica de Panama, Miraflores

This is an earlier post with video that shows the MiniMart (mark 2:49). This link also contains transcript of video:

http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5252090&highlight=cups+coffee#post5252090

IMO, the video we are seeing of Joran leaving the Hotel does not show him going out for coffee. IMO he cancelled the 2 days he owed either when going out for coffee or when he came back with the 2 cups of coffee.

Hope this helps to clarify things a bit
btw, coffee in Peru is really really good! :coffee: no need to go to Starbucks nor Tim Hortons, lol.

Editing to add link to the video. I just noticed that the google-translated link no longer works, but the original (Spanish) link still works and has the video:
