O/T ... thanks narlacat...

You know what the breed is SUPPOSED to look like having a well bred champion. 10 on that page look like dogs I've seen and labeled as a pit bull. 7, 13, 14, & 22 is what type dog I've seen. I've never seen one like the one that was identified as the American Pit Bull.
So now my question is are those really pit bulls doing all the attacking??? Is the wrong breed being blamed, or is the mixes of the pit bull that are wreaking havoc? I didn't know so many other breeds resemble "pit bulls" so closely.
I believe the dig was intended for me. I'm not a bully hater. I just don't care for the breed and frankly don't trust them. I did not intimidate or threaten the dog or the girl. When someone asks you not to come onto your property or bring their dog onto your property, it should be respected. I have owned many dogs over the years and never considered a bull dog of any kind. Best dogs we ever owned with kids were large collie females. They even challenged my authority over my boys in a gentle way. Herded neighborhood kids on the playground, wouldn't let them off the curb into the street, and were generally great child minders.
I had a girlfriend with two pit bulls. Mother and daughter, Annie and Peaches. They loved me, would sit in my lap when I was over. But, absolutely hated my ex. She had to put them away when he came with me.
Oh, I took your test. I'll admit it took me a few tries to get the pit bull right. Many breeds I knew right off. I did google a couple of breeds and found a site that had a form to surrender the Cane Corso, with all sorts of questions about biting people, etc. Also, IIRC, the Presa Canario was the breed that killed that woman in a San Francisco apartment hallway. Both are Molosser types of dogs:

Interesting. It seems that Molosser types split in England and Bull Dogs were started there.
Hi SadieMae! Love your hat. I actually had to look for several minutes before choosing one...
The only thing that looked like my Rosie was the color and the overall body type. My little girl's face was much softer, much less squared. It took me awhile to really look at each one that I thought might be a pit, until I saw the coloring and the way the haunches were on that particular one. So no, I don't know exactly what an American Pit Bull is supposed to look like. I made a decision based on the dog I had that got me started on them, but there were differences...
My girl was an American Staffordshire Terrier...not an American Pit Bull Terrier. Similar but not exactly the same breed although much of the Staff and Bull Terrier's blood is in the Pit Bull. Rosie was a gift and I only had her 10 months and she was my only show dog, ever, but I read everything I could on the breed. The person who gave her to me was really ticked off when instead of breeding her I had her fixed. lol! I never bred them, just raised them...a lot of them were abandoned when people were scared of the news reports that were going around at the time (mid-late 80s).
I totally think you are 100% right though. Too many other breeds that look similar are called "pit bull" by people who may not know what the breed actually is. A guy I knew swore up and down that the Presa Canarios are the same thing as the pit bull (remeber that woman who was killed in her hallway in SanFranscisco? Those dogs were 2 Presas that the owner couldn't control.)
Sissy's mom, I'm sorry to hear about your cat. My 18 year old cat was also killed by pit bulls, although not any of mine. A guy 2 blocks up from where I lived at the time was deliberately letting his dogs loose so they could run around. If I didn't have my own AST dogs (who the cat ruled over) at the time I probably would have felt the same way you do. Again, I'm sorry for you and especially for your cat.
My cousin knew people who worked for the SPCA in Oakland. She said in order to get pit bulls adopted they would advertise them as "Oakland Terriers." What do you think about that? Dangerous to say the least.
A few people have told me my mixed dog, Ruby looks part pit bull. I have had three vets tell me no. But with certainty, I can tell you that if I found out this was true I would still keep her. Here is Ruby, the big brown doggie. What do you think?

Many shelters will put them down immediately. Their reason being they cannot judge the temperament and don't want to be open to a lawsuit. In Detroit I read, anyone under 18 seen with pit bull will have it confiscated, and it will be put down.I don't think that's right. Do the people adopting them know what they are? I know a few animal shelters around me won't even try to adopt them out, no matter what their temperment is, they'll put them down, no questions asked. It's sad.

Far as I know they are not illegal in Detroit..just anyone under 18 cannot own one, or be seen with one. Where I live now...the city shelter willl adopt pits out. That's the majority breed of dogs available at the pound most times. That scares me!

If the cops saw anyone walking a pit they perceived as under 18, they would get stopped for id. If they had none, the AC was called to take the dog. If the dog did belong to the parents, they had to bring all vet records for the dog to reclaim it. Most times you guessed, there were no records on the dog, and it was destroyed. No...they did not want the dogs on the street with anyone under 18. I'm supposing if it "looked" like a pit it was taken. The heavy chain on the neck, the cropped ears drew attention I'm sure. That's odd, how can they determine that? And if they still live at home, it could be their parents dog. Are they just not allowed out in public? And how do they determine that the dog is actually a Pit? My SIL has a boxer that looks a great deal like a Pit.
I'm just wondering, I don't expect you to have the answers. :waitasec:![]()

You can make this post about ANY breed.Absolutely, I believe they are dangerous. I don't trust them 100% in any situation...even if they were raised as the most demure and docile pets on the planet. I wouldn't have one around my children or grandchildren ever. They have maimed and killed children/adults in so many different circumstances. My family won't be put into that situation, if I can help it.
My 80+ yo mother walked out to get in her car last week and her new neighbor's two pits were roaming freely. Luckily, another neighbor happened to notice, rounded them up, and put them back into their owner's yard. He then called the owner to come home immediately. No harm was done, but without a person the dogs already knew...who knows what could have happened?! My mother could have had one of her dogs with her at the time and been in some serious danger.
Irresponsible dog owners make the ban for pits neccessary, IMO. You can't trust them 100% either!
Eaten alive? Didn't see that in your original post. No, I don't think you can. Last time I checked a Yorkie had never eaten anyone alive. Hmmm...I believe looking at the various cases across the nation...you won't find a single incident of it. : )

However, I do agree that being killed by any breed is not a reasonable statement and I stand corrected. To clarify my point, I think one can document attacks/bites aggressive behavior by most breeds.
