That’s not how Hunter’s girlfriend Emily describes it in the Amazon documentary. DM called and asked if Hunter would come check out the house because something weird had happened the night before. She thought maybe she’d imagined it because BF hadn’t heard anything, but they were too scared to check it out because no one was responding to their calls/texts.
Emily said the roommates were already waiting for them outside when she and Hunter got there. Hunter went upstairs first, and Emily had just stepped inside the front door when he came rushing back down and said they needed to call 911 about an unconscious person. Emily said Hunter saw the wounds on Ethan and Xana and immediately knew they were dead, but he was trying to shield the girls from the horror of the situation.
Although, he must have relayed that info to first responders when they arrived though because the EMTs never went inside and the cops put up crime scene tape. The cops weren’t telling them anything about what they’d found inside the house, and then they got the Vandal Alert about a homicide investigation on King Road and realized Xana and Ethan had been murdered.
I think it was only then that they really started to wonder about Maddie and Kaylee whereabouts. They don’t say that in the documentary; it’s just my impression. I don’t think anyone even dared to consider that all 4 of them might be dead until they received the second Vandal Alert calling it a quadruple homicide investigation.
The girls were understandably very upset with the police officers on scene for not telling them anything while they’d been sitting outside the house for hours.
