"Thompson said
he had no idea why Kohberger ultimately took the plea deal.
Much about Kohberger remains an enigma,
he added.

'It would always be nice to have an answer to everything,
but the reality is,
that we don't always have that luxury'."

About the front door, if it was only partially open, DM would almost have to had to close it to get past on the way to BFs room. The stairwell leads right to the front door. She didn't say anything about the front door being open when heading to BFs room that I recall. I might have missed it.

BBM

THIS!!! Genius!

The front door is literally right at the bottom of the stairs to the first floor. To get to Bethany's room, she would come down the stairs and be standing right in front of it before turning left to go down the hall to B's room which is partially under the stairs.

Now, DM was freaked, it was dark, and she was running. But if the front door had been open a signifcant amount it would not only have been visually obvious since their is the outside light over that door and it was on--not to mention if it was open even 1/3 of the way she would have had to close it to get around it to go down to BF's room. She would have also felt the cold from it being open.

One possibility is that Xana had closed the door but accidentally had not pushed it that last tiny bit that makes it latch. Wind could have blown it in after DM had gone down.

Another thing that calls the door being fully open into question--from the 1st floor bathroom door you can see if the front door is fully open. Given the difference in time between when BF & DM woke up and when they called EA, I would think that one of them would have ran down the hall and used the 1st floor bathroom during that time. If the door was open any significant amount, they should have seen it then or felt the cold air.

Was there only the 1 person reporting that they saw the front door open before HJ arrived?

In the middle of the article, it is a good read. I’m up to the drive back home to PA-it doesn’t sound like his car was packed up with a lot of stuff. The Pullman apartment was completely cleaned out. Did he have very few belongings? Did he move out there with just clothing? Did he dump all of his cleaning supplies and other things he needed for apartment living? It took multiple trips to pack up my kid each year after college.
The SW results from his parents home seemed to have personal necessities listed clothing, shoes, electronics, etc. I can see the Murderer not having excess items (OCD can mean clean and tidy, minimalist) which I believe he could have gotten in the car trunk and back seat. I believe he arrived at WSU with very few belongings.

Do we know if it was a furnished apartment since he was a TA? The second bedroom was completely empty, probably never set up since he was a single occupant. His assigned storage closet in the apt. was empty as well.

The Murderer was never planning on coming back to WSU IMO. He wouldn't have left anything of evidentiary value. He had about 4 weeks to destroy evidence from his car, apartment, and his shared campus office (computer) as well.

He'd lost his TA job, there was a BOLO out for his car, it was seen on CCTV, and HE knew he left the knife sheath at the crime scene. I bet he'd already planned a 'sob story' for his parents as to why.

Just a thought. MOO

I think Kaylee might have started out trying to sleep in her bed and then went into Maddie's room to call her ex bf - J and fell asleep there. It might explain why the covers were turned back and Murphy was found in Kaylee's room, but I can't recall if the door was open or shut. Could the rough housing noises and Murphy barking have been heard by DM earlier before the Murderer was inside? IDK

The DDD said she kept seeing a brunette pop in/out of a window, was that Xana watching for her order from the 2nd or 3rd floor bathroom window? (3rd I think, but I can't remember the layout) The DDD said she was first instructed to leave it at the patio slider but she didn't feel comfortable doing that so she finally ended up leaving it at the front door aka the basement level. Anyone?

MOO

M stated she initially parked in the front of 1122 King Road and could see a female in the top left window (the third story bathroom). M said she saw the same female a couple more times in the same window and she would duck down when M looked at her.

Third floor bathroom.

Which makes no sense to me why, if it was Xana, she would be up there. She'd have just as good a view from her bedroom window or the living room window. She also wouldn't have any need to use the upstairs bathroom given that there is one right next to hers or the 1st floor bathroom.

And if she was there expressly to look out for the DD driver, she wouldn't be ducking down repeatedly.

So, even though Xana is the only brunette in the house, it couldn't and shouldn't have been her. There's a small chance she saw Kaylee in the bathroom if the bathroom was only lit by a nightlight--that could make her hair look darker than its blonde color. Alternately, in document 32 (the listing of what evidence was collected from each victim by the ME), Maddie is listed as having a black hair tie--so presumably her hair was pulled back or up for the night in a ponytail/bun. That could maybe make her hair appear darker by a night light.

Honestly, given the impression I got from the DoorDash driver's interview in doc 104....I can't say I consider her the most reliable witness when it comes to details. So I don't feel 100% sure that if she actually saw someone that they were on the 3rd floor, or that they were brunette....and I honestly am only about 50% sure she even saw a person in the first place.

Kohberger then fled the scene, and likely took Kernodle's fast food order with him out the door.

That would explain why Mortensen reported seeing the killer exit the home with a package in his hands.

Why would BK take Xana's Taco Bell order? He's vegetarian. Although after that type of adrenaline dump that he had just had, he could have been ravenous.

Her impact statement was so raw.... one line in particular seared into my brain.

"He didn't just take them from the world, he took them from ME. they were MY friends."

So poignant. Well written. Real. They were HERS, not his.

Her loss is incalculable. The friends, the innocence, the carefreeness. He left her with fear.

So unfair.

So senseless.

Brutal.

Sorry - best image I can do, from courtTV. ( Ignore backpack ref, Chief Fry later decided it was old, had been there some time)

Here's some images from WS-er cujenna's old photo collection ( Linked on page 1 of every WS thread) This might be the stump?

I doubt they were determined to be BK's, given that Thompson stated BK had parked behind the house (aka the apt parking lot up and behind) and wouldn't have needed to go around the right side of the house.. Interviews with the friends have mentioned the frequency with which the back sliding door was used as an entrance since it wasn't usually locked/able to be locked. And there had been several males at the house just that day and the few days before: Hunter C, Hunter J, Peter E, Linden B (Patterson book, pg 59-60) according. And those are just the guys that Xana and Ethan's friends told the author about. In the released police documents, some things that DM and BF said sounded like one or both of them may have have had a male friend over on the 12th.

The cars were moved around Dec 5:

Some of the first pictures were posted by Daniel Ramirez, the photographer for the U of I student newspaper The Argonaut.

This photo from an article on Nov 13, 2022 is from later in the day, after the group of survivors, siblings, and friends had all been taken to the police station to be interviewed (the yellow item in the middle of the road up by the dumpsters is one of the blankets a friend brought out to the kids while they were all sitting huddled there.

I had no idea WSU issued a No Trespassing Order against BK
Did Univ of Idaho?

How many times did he wander around at night driving to see the 1122 house when he should have been sleeping- and walk in tired and disheveled?
As others have said, his murder prep ‘hobby’ may have cost him his job and his PhD program.

IMO
Those orders was issued the day he was arrested, So, it would make sense that they would not allow him on their campuses again.

See this still surprising to me. So they got the bodies but not what happened to them at the time?
Emphasis mine.
Agreed.

I was wondering if the full extent of their injuries has still not been revealed to the families.
If they wanted (despite it being painful) they should have been allowed to see the crime scene photos, etc.

Some people have a difficult time believing their loved one is no more, if all they get is a coffin and told to not look inside.

Just my opinion but I would need to see my child if something happened -- barring extraordinary circumstances like the flight of MH370 where no remains could be recovered ?
I don't know exactly what occurred-- but I thought from the beginning the families knew everything ?
Not fair to them if information is being withheld.

The reactions from some family members makes me think they're not being given any information outside of what the public already knows, and that's not right.
We the public don't need to know everything, but the families deserve answers !

It sounds he like barely scraped by to complete the masters and to be accepted into the PhD program. Sometimes, supervisors are willing to take a chance on a wild card. It sounds like Kohberger was that wild card ... who turned out to be a dismal disappointment.

I recall reading something about his relationship with a professor during his master's degree, and I had the impression that he used arrogance and intimidation to influence grades - no idea where I read that anymore. I'm curious whether he tried that with Prof. Snyder and it backfired.
His Master's Asst. Prof at DeSales, MB, is the one who gave the Murderer a glowing recommendation. She said she had only other recommended one other Masters Student to a Doctoral Program in her 10 years.

She thought the Murderer was extremely bright and intelligent. She sounded rather impressed by him.

<snipped> 🤮

A former university professor said the accused killer was “one of my best students, ever” — and that the then-master’s candidate was one of only two students she has recommended to a Ph.D. program.

MB, an associate professor at DeSales University in Pennsylvania, told the Daily Mail that Kohberger, who was arrested in the murders of four University of Idaho students, was a “great writer” and “brilliant student.”

Don't know if this is readable. Neighbor reported to LE that front door of 1122 King Rd. was open between approximately 9AM to 10 AM on 11/13/22. Neighbor didn't give it much thought at the time because it was a party house. The homicides were not yet discovered.

Perhaps someone stopped by earlier and opened the door to see if anyone was awake but got no response and didn't pull the front door shut?

We know Dylan saw BK, but do we know that BK saw Dylan? I don’t think we do.

It may be that BK did not see Dylan, but heard her yell for Kaylee and thought that voice was Xana’s.
He may have thought the noise and movement was gone and the house was cleared.
It is possible after Xana and Ethan his focus was getting out of there.

What is interesting is he did not go out the front door, which was right there down the steps. Instead he walked through the living room, that little hall, the kitchen, across the porch and around to his car that was parked nearest the front. Sure, he could have been seen going out the front- but also going to his car.
I also find it odd that instead of taking a left and walking in the dark between the house and that wall of dirt- the footsteps they found cross the porch and past the big stump to the right.

IMO
The front door was on the basement level and would put him in front of the house and the other apartments in front and to the side (closely), he was pressed for time at that point I believe, peeling out fast enough to have almost lost control of his car.

BK left out the slider door which was a quick walk from Xana's room and out to his car which they believed was parked above and in back of the house, better coverage.

I agree BK may have not even seen DM even though she did see him and his bushy byebrow (TM @Megnut).

So weird....not the first time high IQ correlates with killers. Even serial ones IIRC.

The Murderer's IQ was 119 which isn't genius level by any means. I think he was a master manipulator to those people around him that he found vulnerable.

I agree, some SK have high IQ's. Bundy, Gacey, Keyes, and even Dahmer had high IQ's.

I've discussed it before, but I'm certain BK has Raynauds. My partner has it. If you look at photographs showing his hands, they're often blanched white or obviously have blood pooling.

This picture shows it really clearly.

I have raynauds… I didn’t realize this, which is so odd because I’m very self conscious of my hands and their colors that normally I would have noticed!

I had the same question, I supposed it depends.
What had he told his parents?
If his parents didn’t know- he had to make a plan to return to get anything he wanted after he broke the news to his family that he had lost funding.
When you watch the video with the cop it isn’t obvious that the back seat is full of items. The cop doesn’t mention it or ask about it.

Was he a minimalist?
I’ve seen appts of poor college students that slept on the floor and had cardboard boxes for a coffee and side tables. Maybe that was his style?

I’m with you, when I’ve moved in a sedan I could not have carried a passenger, much less see out the back window. To move my kids we’ve used my Suburban and their car- dorm living is lighter but he was in an apartment alone.

IMO

I saw that. And if that person is the only person saying it, I have some doubts as to whether or not that person got their dates straight.

So say that witness is correct that he saw the door on that date at that time at that house open--I haven't seen any reports say that DM or BF told the police that when they exited their room to either A) go outside to wait for Hunter J or B) when they exited after Hunter J got there that the door was open at that time (it is not clear to me if they waited outside for Hunter J or waited in BF's room). I don't see any reports where DM or BF told police that when Hunter arrived he said something like "hey, you guys, do you know your front door is wide open?" Given that DM and BF were spooked about the possibility that she saw someone in the house in the night and that's why they asked HJ to come over, I would think either the girls or Hunter would immediately notice and see importance in that front door being open at noon on Sunday. And that either Hunter J, DM, or BF would have told the police about it.

So if I'm to believe the door was open before DM came downstairs to BF's room, it could only have been open a tiny bit or she would have noticed even in her panic. Sure, wind could have then blown it open after she came down in order for it to be seen to be open from 9-10 ish.....but if neither DM/BF/or Hunter J said it was open at noon when Hunter J arrived.....then we would have to believe that some random person came up and closed it between 10ish and noon? Or the wind magically sucked it closed after it had blown it open? Or Murphy was a very polite dog and he went down and closed the wide open door (which then DM, BF, or HJ would have noticed the front door, which they said was locked, was unlocked when HJ came in or when the girls exited to meet him).

If it's a choice between the witness being wrong or the door opening and then being shut again after the person saw it (and no one from the house or who went to the house to check things out for the girls reporting it to police), then to me the odds are on the witness having the date wrong, especially if was common for that person to walk their dog on that route and around that time.

I have heard in so many crime cases where witnesses are absolutely positive they saw something on a specific day/time...but further investigation proves that they were mistaken as to the day/time.

respectfully snipped by me

I think that has to be it - the door being open is getting too complicated to be plausible and the Bethany comment on seeing a light under her door must also be a misperception.

Anyway, I don't know how everybody else feels but reading these accounts on the website again is horrible. A part of me wants to try and fit this new info into the puzzle and the other part is - Phew! This is so grim.

I've skipped over to the later batches of documents for a break from it. Can't imagine how family/friends feel if they're reading any of these.
