Police officer makes young daughter stand outside in freezing temperatures holding cruel sign as 'punishment'

What a Bad Dad

Sad all around. The parents must have been at the end of their rope. She was not physically endangered (kids play that long outside in that type of weather bundled up like that). Sounds like they tried hospitalization twice and she was discharged. I’m betting they knew it would get investigated- and were probably actually hoping an agency would get involved. Perhaps they feel she needs long term hospitalizations, no one believed them, and this was a cry for help with that. MOO
Alternatively they are making up what she's doing to get her on medication. It'll be interesting to see how she behaves under the care of people who give a damn about her. Jmo, moo

I didn't catch it in the articles I read, but I hope she was removed from the home after they were arrested. They bonded out and I'd hate to think of what they'd do to her now.

And her younger brother

This is horrific. The parents need to be jailed, but this child also needs urgent help. A child taking anti psychotics is extremely rare, she must really be struggling. Hope she can get the help she needs
Her "parents" may also have taken her from doctor to doctor until they found one who would write prescriptions no questions asked, to basically make her completely compliant. Not the first time that's happened.

I used to work at a hospital that had adult and pediatric psychiatric units. It was very common for people, of all ages and conditions, to have all their meds discontinued on admission, so the staff can see what they are "really" like.

This older article is even more infuriating:

Gibbs said the girl was crying and seemed afraid to answer questions. Her cheeks and nose were red, Gibbs said, and she was shivering uncontrollably. By her estimate, the girl had been outside for at least 30 minutes.

***

During the interaction, Gibbs said, she could see the girl’s mother giggling from the window.

Officer Cody Scott and his wife, Kylie Scott, are both charged with two counts of felony...

The case worker said this wasn’t the first time the girl was made to hold a sign. In one incident, her parents made her carry a sign to school that said, “I pee on everything and cover it up like a cat.”

The school also reported the girl also was made to carry a sign at Walmart that read, “I lie to hurt other people.”

Wow the second officer to turn up declined to make a report saying that nothing illegal was going on

What they do. No integrity, wonder if he had children at home. Bad decision, so proud of the woman savior, she stepped UP.

Tough guy, reallly tough guy. SO cool, he thinks. I want his and wife's pix plastered all over with the story. I bet there are incidents where he bullied young women in his tough guy outfit too.

It is situations like this that erode the public's faith in the police. Absolutely unbelievable! The father and mother both arrested... I support the termination of the 2nd officer for ignoring the situation simply because the father was also a police officer.

I repeat: What is wrong with these people?

"I lie to hurt other people" that's a lot of adult-level reasoning being assumed there. She's SIX?? Six year olds are still in the beginning stages of developing impulse control and emotional regulation at all, and they think she's able to reason out and control her own behavior to affect other people?

That was horrible read!!

If all the parents said is true, she's a difficult child - no doubt about that. But it's their responsibility to keep knocking on doors to seek effective therapy. I noted he said she's already been in therapy for three years, but didn't state a diagnosis, why is that?

I hope the light shined on this little one, means DCF will also be looked at for how they are managing thier case. Because I fear with the way these two parents viewed/parented their child before being charged with neglect and being put on admin leave as a cop - puts her at risk for even worse treatment in the home which will be covered up.

Poor little thing, my heart hurts for her.

He said that aside from beating her, he couldn’t think of another effective punishment. It doesn’t sound like he is admitting that he beat her only that other punishments weren’t effective
I agree, but it speaks to state of mind. Unbelievable to even say that out loud.

To school or into school?

If she was made to carry the sign into school and nothing was said or done, that's a massive safeguarding failure by the school and its staff and management.

If she carried it to school, why did no other parent see it and flag the situation up to the school or authorities?

I knew a really kind couple who had adopted the two young daughters of a drug-using relative. You can imagine what the girls had gone through before being adopted. The younger one was the more troubled of the two and after a couple of years the family had to institutionalize her so she could get help. I never knew the details, but I figured there was possible violence because they couldn’t keep her at home. Nevertheless, every weekend for a year they drove three hours one way to see her. When they brought her home they had no more obvious problems, but they eventually moved close to where she had been so help was available if needed.

The fact that they never revealed details showed me how much they cared and were trying to protect and help her…unlike the horrible parents on this thread.

Gee whiz, I wonder why this child is acting out, with parents like that!
Hoping that there is a kind and loving relative who can help this poor child.
Therapy for her is sorely needed -- and probably lots of it. Sad, scary, and pitiful. Grrrrr.
Wondering how early these "punishments" got started. This could be a very tough row to hoe for her and whoever is able to help her.
Makes my blood boil.
Lock'em up.
