It's not an auspicious start to what could be a long pontificate.
Not just that, he has a history of shameful and ignorant bigotry.
I hope he's evolved since then and the beliefs he held in 2012 are no longer ones he stands behind.
Let's see who he is now in 2025. Let's hope he's a much more informed, more educated, more inclusive and less bigoted person than the one 2012 shows him to be.
A good pope would be one who publicly acknowledges his past failures, commits himself to righting the wrongs of his past thinking, and reaches out to all those his bigotry served directly to hurt and marginalize.
That's what a good, progressive pope would do if he wants to be seen as someone of worth in 2025.
