Pope Francis has died, Vatican says, 21 Apr 2025

The Mail has a lengthy report today about the accusations that the new Pope actively turned a blind eye to clerical abuse of children in both Chicago and South America.

It's not an auspicious start to what could be a long pontificate.

Not just that, he has a history of shameful and ignorant bigotry.

I hope he's evolved since then and the beliefs he held in 2012 are no longer ones he stands behind.

Let's see who he is now in 2025. Let's hope he's a much more informed, more educated, more inclusive and less bigoted person than the one 2012 shows him to be.

A good pope would be one who publicly acknowledges his past failures, commits himself to righting the wrongs of his past thinking, and reaches out to all those his bigotry served directly to hurt and marginalize.

That's what a good, progressive pope would do if he wants to be seen as someone of worth in 2025.

What country was Prevost in when he made those anti gay marriage remarks?

It is down in black and white in one very recent SCOTUS opinion, 2022, that gay marriage should undergo the same legal examination as that which resulted in overturning abortion rights. So, at least one member of SCOTUS is included in Dobbs as wanting to possibly overturn gay marriage rights. In 2022, 3 years ago. One of the most powerful jurists in America.

I don't see that Pope Leo XIV has anything to apologize for.

2012 was 13 years ago.

Pope Francis didn't make any changes to church doctrine on the issues raised in the Guardian article that you linked, above. His pastoral approach was to affirm the dignity of all people, which is what Pope Leo also emphasized as he spoke to Catholics on the balcony of the Vatican yesterday.

I think the only difference between Pope Francis and Pope Leo on the issues the Guardian article discusses is that Pope Leo will provide more clarity on Church doctrine on these issues and the appropriateness of various pastoral approaches as the Church reaches out to affirm the dignity of all people.

I suspect Pope Leo's stance of homosexuality is part of the reason he was chosen.

"And as soon as he went 'Ro-', my mind blew up, because I knew 'Ro-' was going to turn into Roberto. And sure enough, Roberto Francisco," Louis told CBS News. "And I went nuts. I lost it. Mind blown. My little brother was just made pope. Oh my God. What do I do? How do I act? Do I have to change the way I live? I better behave now."

Louis said that he hasn't gotten a chance to speak to his younger brother to congratulate him, but understands that he is starting a new life.

"He will always be Rob," Prevost said. "If we do get over there and do get to meet him, I'm still going to treat him like my little brother. Give him a hug, say 'Rob, you idiot, what have you done?' Take his hat off and give him a nuggie."

  • "The Pope chose the name Leo XIV in honor of St. Leo the Great, signaling his mission of strengthening the Church and courage in the face of contemporary challenges.
  • His vision is a Church that listens, is open to lay people, supports peace and dialogue, but is also firmly rooted in Tradition.
  • In moral matters, he supports mercy and pastoral care close to people, without renouncing the teaching of the Church.
  • Reactions to the election of Leo XIV were positive and hopeful, especially in North and Latin America .
  • Pope Leo XIV's Pontificate is to focus on synodality, ecology, social justice and the role of Church in the era of modern technologies."

Actually, Wikipedia states Prevost was chosen as a compromise. Pietro Patrolin was unable to gain support from African and Asian cardinals and Pope Francis' supporters were divided between Jean-Marc Aveline and Mario Grech.

I must say that the new Pope received warm/positive reactions in my country - Poland.

From Authorities, Church, Media to the public.

Reading comments under an avalanche of articles on Media websites
I saw mainly positive/optimistic opinions.

People compare the new Pope to "our"/Polish John Paul II :)
which, I tell you,
says a lot about the attitude of Catholics here.

And Chicago is close to our hearts ❤️
as this is the main center of Polonia (Poles living abroad) in the USA.

So...
So far, so good!!! :D

Fantapapa (Italian for 'Fantasy Pope') is a fantasy league based in Italy for betting nominal sums on papal conclaves. Established by anti-gambling advocates Pietro Pace and Mauro Vanetti specifically for the 2025 conclave, the sole payout is "eternal glory".

I am shocked that so many cardinals are > 80. And the complete absence of women in the Papal Conclave.😔

Yep.
I noticed it too.

"Co-creator Mauro Vanetti has pointed out
that Fantapapa
is somewhat reminiscent
of the old methods of electing a Pope.

Before the closed Conclave was introduced,
Popes were elected in an electoral process
in which ordinary Roman citizens could vote.

The creators sought to capture the public mood
while respecting the seriousness of the subject."

Well, at least this Pope is relatively young. He may be more in touch with modern life.

Oh wow, Prevost sat in the SAME SPOT where Pope Francis was elected.

Seems like he had no other serious competitor other than Pietro Parolin.

Somehow we all seemed to miss Francis's hand-picked HR director as a potential next pope!
i had seen him on some lists, but i kind of thought “nah, an american pope won’t happen”

i was wrong!

Cardinal Parolin was the first to kiss the ring, said Cardinal William Goh of Singapore. “Parolin is a gentleman,” he said

Of course.
These are ecclesiastical people.
Faithful - Loyal and Steadfast.
These are Cardinals,
chosen to serve the Church and its unity.
