I think there where 2 AV choppers (one going towards Essendon and on coming from Essendon) because they change shifts around that time.

Ambulance choppers are usually involved in search and rescue (of many different kind) so their participation is not unusual.
Yep, I know the ambulance helicopters have been involved in the searching since the beginning, and not necessarily be used as an ambulance. I was pointing out that it is unusual for there be two of them together! Also it is unusual for them to be able to be seen on the radar.

IMO

They are usually visible in the radar. I often monitor them.
It could be that there were 2 because one was returning to base for the end of their shift, and the other one was going from base to the search area for the beginning of their shift. This is my speculation, but it would fit with previous experience.

So where does Wonangatta fit in there please?
I don't know the answer, but Wangaratta is relatively close to the area of search so there may be an operational reason for it. Another reason may be that they were rerouted in flight, whilst originally bound to Wangaratta.

Victoria Police widen their search for wanted man | 9 News Australia

61 year old man taken in for questioning claims to have not known Mr Freeman personally but admits they were in online groups together.

That sounds familiar, possibly this guy?

"Protected from the rain by a well-used Drizabone and a bushman's hat, Stephen Mallett is an ex-bikie who knows Mr Freeman from a Facebook group dedicated to preparing for the apocalypse..."

I suppose he would have been in groups with a lot of people though

We support him, FEED HIS WIFE AND KIDS, while he speeds around suburban streets, thinking up ways he has been persecuted, fronting up at Centrelink dead on time for payments, ,wandering off shouting abuse at coppers, and pedestrians, and neighbors, and staff at various Govt offices.. killing the wildlife, and on top of all this, finding the time and the energy to sexually assault a child@@809gjgrjdsjgo .... Fair go, sport!!
He thinks he is entitled to all of the benefits, yet refuses the accountability for his own actions and he doesn’t accept the responsibilities of society. Typical narcissist, even down to representing himself in court.

The sooner he is caught the better. Unfortunately the pandemic really brought out a lot of his type, add the lack of accessibility to affordable mental health services. I expect we will continue to see more of these dreadful events.

Caves, mines and dugouts will be scoured by detectives — but police also suspect he may not be hiding alone.

He and his wife, Mali, are well-liked in their community, and detectives fear local residents of the small rural town could also be harbouring the fugitive.

Dezi and Mali are considered kind, helpful, church-going people by those who know them.

Most likely LE thinks there's a possibility that Dezi or someone helping him may be viewing the cameras online to see what is going on at the airport.

If LE is using the airport for flights or other operations, they don't want him to know what is going on.

One of the helicopters did a few circles in this area just now, and then flew a little further and turned off its tracking near Selzers Lane.

On Saturday, Victoria Police revealed they were questioning a 61-year-old man who had been arrested in Bright, just outside Porepunkah.

Police found weapons and cannabis in the man's home about 4:45pm on Friday.

The man has been charged with being a prohibited person possessing an imitation firearm and possessing a drug of dependence.

He was bailed to appear before Myrtleford Magistrate's Court on October 3.

Police have not revealed whether the man was associated with Mr Freeman.

Dezi Freeman's wife has urged the alleged Porepunkah gunman to surrender

The wife of alleged gunman Dezi Freeman has urged her husband to surrender and offered her condolences to the families of two police officers who were shot dead last week in regional Victoria.

In a statement provided via her lawyer, Amalia Freeman said she and her children wished to "share our deep sorrow for the loss of the lives of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart".

Ms Freeman said she and her children "respect the important work of Victoria Police and do not hold anti-authority views".

"We echo the requests of the Victoria Police for the swift and safe conclusion of this tragedy," she said.

"I lend my full support to Victoria Police in their search for my husband and will co-operate with Victoria Police in any way that I can.

"Please Dezi, if you see or hear this, call 000 and arrange a surrender plan with the police."
Ms Freeman also asked anyone who may be harbouring or helping Mr Freeman to contact police.

Still mighty cold around lovely Porepunkah, ... Dez is out there carting around his 'arsenal ' of firepower, none of which are designed for hiking, he has to keep track of all his ammo, too, it seems to me that his stuff is not interchangeable, he has to carry each guns ammunition separately , and keep it all dry, otherwise it will blow up in his face, what a shame.

He must be slung about with his own home made stuff, plus the stuff he lifted off his dead victims, and we don't know what they were, a Smith and Wesson semi automatic , can carry 14 rounds.. but those police may have been well and truly equipped with other stuff, too..

( these are the descriptions of firepower issued to VICPOL )

Semi Automatic AR-15 Rifle

Heavy calibre .223 weapons, 300 metre range and 30 shot magazines. For use by Public Order Response Team (PORT) as well as Special Operations Group. Locked in stations and vehicles. Should only be deployed for terrorist or ‘active armed offender’, ‘mass violence’ incident.

X26 Taser

Shoots two barbed darts to deliver multiple pulses of a 50,000 volt electrical current that lasts over five seconds. Camera activates when used.

VKS Pepper ball firearm

A 175 shot pepper ball semi-automatic rifle; black with bright green or yellow cartridges or shoulder stock. Fires Kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs) which can be OC (capsicum) projectiles the size of marbles or; dye markers to brand people so they can be identified later.

Baton-round Launcher

A 40-millimetre launcher that fires a hard squash ball KIP (pictured right) that can hit a person within 50 metres.

Plus various stingers and spray stuff, enough to disable......

He could have any or all of this, depending on what those arresting officers were carrying, and since there was quite a few of them, I imagine they were all well and truly togged up with all the banging and shooting stuff they could lay their hands on..

Sounds like Mdme Freeman has consulted a savvy solicitor, paving the way for impending charges and court appearances.......... get in first with the apologies. .
