Police return to shooting scene as slain officers named

Police have returned to a rural property where two officers were allegedly ambushed and executed in cold blood, as their all-out land and air search continues.”

“The weather in Victoria's high country continues to deteriorate on Wednesday as the search focuses back on the property.

Several police cars, some with NSW plates, were seen driving to the blocked-off property.

Two helicopters were searching the alpine region, with one hovering on top of the property before leaving just after 2pm.”

“A no-fly zone, spanning about 7.5km, for all aircraft and drones has been granted by the aviation bureau and will run until at least 11.30pm on August 29.

Marty Robinson, who has known Freeman for about 30 years, suggested the fugitive was highly intelligent.

He couldn't say for certain but believes Freeman is bunkered down in bushland.”

"He will survive out there," he told AAP.”

"He's the modern-day Ned Kelly."

Remember Malcolm Naden? Fugitive from the NSW police, kept on the run for 7 long years, finally run to ground....

Malcolm used to be AU's most hunted man...

...... now it's Filby.... that clip of him at the Wangaratta Court where he becomes so enamoured of his own oratory that he tries to arrest the prosecuting police officer, ( he gets treated like the idiot he is ) gives a bit of insight... I reckon he is going to try a police showdown where he comes off martyred 'for the cause'... There would be no point in him givin himself up, cop killers don't get much leeway in court...

Just for the nuttiness of it, a small clip of a sov cit up against NSW pol ( a friend used to send these clips to me on a daily basis ) ....

Paramedics enter police blockade

Meanwhile, a helicopter has been circling near where gunman Dezi Freeman lived in Porepunkah for at least the past hour, while the community remains in lockdown.

Paramedics have just been seen entering the police blockade, but no extra information has been given.

An occasional police car has come in and out, with authorities saying he is still on the run. They’re asking everyone in the area not to move around unless essential.

Victoria Police have sent another message to people in the Porepunkah area as the search continues for Freeman, requesting “non-essential travel” to be avoided.

It reads:

Message from Victoria Police. Specialist police continue to search for Dezi Freeman (aka Desmond FILBY). There are multiple police units in the general area of Porepunkah and Victoria Police request you restrict non-essential travel.

Some roadblocks and travel restrictions may be in place. If you see anything suspicious call 000.

I'm interested in the paramedics arrival. Could just be I haven't paid attention before, but I've never noticed their arrival when not needed. Particularly Mica.

No resource spared in manhunt for Porepunkah shooter: Premier

“Police Minister Anthony Carbines thanks the families of Vadim De Waart and Neal Thompson for the sacrifice the pair had made.

He says the operation to bring the alleged gunman, Dezi Freeman, into custody is ongoing.

Ms Allan repeated Chief Commissioner Bush's words yesterday, stating police would find the culprit.

"Every resource is being dedicated to finding this criminal," Ms Allan says.

"And every resource will be added to if the Chief Commissioner needs additional support."

Porepunkah school will be open tomorrow

“Porepunkah school will be open tomorrow, Victoria’s deputy premier and minister for education, Ben Carroll, says.

Speaking with reporters just now, he said the school had completed a lockdown drill “only a few weeks ago”.

He said the way the school had responded yesterday was “textbook”, keeping classes operating during lockdown, making sure students were escorted for toilet breaks and providing occupational health and therapy in classrooms
.”

He said:

I couldn’t be more proud of Porepunkah, how they responded yesterday and I know how they’ll respond tomorrow when the school reopens. It’s very close knit, only 100 students, 12 teachers, and a lot more education support staff from Melbourne that are up there at the moment.

Australia does not have the death penalty, unless something has changed and it passed me by.

I think Mr Silvester means death by a shoot out.

Article about the A Current Affair segment with the feuding neighbours

Dezi Freeman manhunt: The four months I spent talking to accused cop killer as search continues in Porepunkah

One day, Dezi Freeman told me about being back in court to settle one of his feuds. At the time, I believed it was another inconsequential update.

To get to the point where he would send over footage, I had to listen to Dezi’s endless theories on why his neighbours taunted him, which he muttered under his breath in phone calls where he would spiral into rants.

It was the unofficial currency of mine and Dezi’s relationship: he would trade in videos of his neighbours taunting him; I would lend him my ear to absorb his ranting.

He found it cathartic.

In each message Dezi sent me mentioning Zar over the four months, he lost his relaxed, country-bumpkin demeanour, as if his larynx had seized up and all he knew was spiteful, exaggerated language.

snip

This is when it clicked that Dezi was a man endlessly pre-occupied by a battle to protect his world, even when he had no solid proof to legitimise his fears, and he was so obsessed with protecting it, he would resort to airing his dirty laundry on national TV.

Lot more at link

Than this is the segment they aired

Just goes to show how much these shows are twisted to fit a story!

I can't understand why the target area now seems so close to the shooting.
Knowing the area like the back of his hand, probably being prepared for a situation like this and knowing bush skills, surely he got further away than 1km in 24 hours.
And if he shot himself then it was a poor excuse for a war he waged against police.

How the hunt for accused shooter Freeman could unfold

“Near-impenetrable alpine bushland and the possibility of further ambushes will hamper police as they pursue accused killer Dezi Freeman.

The property where he was living backs on to forests that become part of Mount Buffalo National Park, terrain locals describe as dense and steep, with no easy walking paths.

“Most of it you’re bush-bashing,” said Robert
Deeble, who manages a store in Mansfield and regularly hunts in the area. “Even as an experienced hunter, it’s tough going.”

Freeman is also an experienced bushman, so Deeble estimated that he might be able to travel 10 to 15 kilometres a day through the area.

The dense terrain, full of crags and gullies, meant finding Freeman from the ground would be extremely difficult.”
