Ray taught Dezi Freeman about the bush. Later, he watched in dismay as his friend became ‘radicalised’

Years ago, Ray Kompe took Freeman walking around Mount Buffalo, showing him the mountain, saying the pair became “good friends” before the fugitive fell in “with the wrong crowd”.

“I took him up there, and it was just a great epiphany for him,” the Porepunkah resident says.

Freeman’s love for the high country “became more intense”, he took up photography and Kompe took him on walks to places including Dickson’s Falls.

On Friday, Kompe is leaning on his gate with his dog Luna in his hands. A convoy of police have just searched his home, one of hundreds that have been searched over the past 11 days. Kompe says he has not seen Freeman properly in 10 years now and he is not accused of any wrongdoing.

“We used to do a lot of crazy walks … but then he fell into the wrong crowd,” he says.

Kompe says Freeman became more ideologically extreme and would talk about how he “had a great disdain for Australian women”. The two men would say hello if they passed each other in the street in Bright, but as Freeman’s views changed, their friendship waned.

“It was just like a switch that was switched off, and that was basically as he started to become a bit radicalised,” he says.

Kompe says he taught Freeman how to move through the bush without using the paths, instead bushbashing through the thick scrub. Freeman learned where the mine adits in the area are. He says they hold heat exceptionally well and can be 18C even at night.

“He just loved the bush, and I was probably the catalyst for all of that,” Kompe says.

“He’s become very proficient at getting around it.”

Cops seen pulling over and searching cars

“Tactical police have spent the afternoon pulling over locals and searching their cars as the manhunt for alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman nears the end of its eleventh day.

Hundreds of police and Australian Defence Force personnel spent the day scouring Victoria's High Country on the hunt for Freeman, 56, who fled into bushland after the August 26 shootings.

Earlier on Friday, police searched a rural property on Buckland Valley Road located about 10km from the shootout.

A dozen heavily-armed SOGs with their guns drawn searched the property, along with the police dog squad.

A police drone was seen hovering in the skies above.

Tactical officers were later seen on nearby roads pulling over vehicles to speak to locals and search car boots.”

Pleeeeease...........

Paraphrased :

Dezi's best mate Bruce Evans ( software developer ), who he met thru the Baptist Church, thinks Dezi shot in self defense & says there could have been a more peaceful solution........“I think from his perspective, he’s shot in self-defence,’’

Bruce is concerned Dezi maybe dead , but he'd also like to see evidence, like the body worn camera to explain what happened.

Plus he also outlined the extreme stress the fugitive felt over his children and alleged sex-abuse claims...............

Bruce also deeply lamented the deaths of the two police officers, did not condone the shootings , but ( there always seems to be a but with Bruce ) Dezi had felt “terrorised” by authorities after years of legal battles in the area over the pandemic measures. “I’d like to give my condolences to the families of the police officers shot,’’ Mr Evans said. “And second, I do not condone the shooting of police. However, there is a lot more to the story.’’

Bruce also doesn't think Dezi had financial means to amass an arsenal of weapons and that there had been no discussion about the potential for a well-resourced bunker.

Bruce says Dezi was a financial battler............

Bruce says didn't he believe Freeman had a sophisticated bunker in which to hide, although he said Freeman was a martial-arts expert who had good bush skills.

Bruce also said Freeman did not want his children “indoctrinated” by schools that taught gender politics.

There is speculation that the historical sex-abuse allegations raised by police related to a complaint from decades ago, possibly when Freeman was in his late teens.

Talk about trying to turn the alleged murderer into a victim.

I checked the cameras out at Porepunkah airfield just now, and you can see what must be a search light from a chopper. Within 7 minutes it was gone.

I think he had some "handy" neighbours to help him?
I think that could be a good possibility.

One of the journalists interviewed a local sympathizer of the perpetrator whose support for the perpetrator stopped just short of murder. So, he had at least some support in the area.

Here in the US, there were sovereign type groups known to sponsor "build parties" of untraceable guns. Little skill, however, was needed as it was legal to buy all the parts. The group would then assist with the modest machining needed.

But.... if the perpetrator was building hi powered rifles, your question could be a good one: Was he getting help from handy friends in the movement? And..... Are they helping others?

Victoria Police has announced a reward of up to $1M for information leading to the arrest of Desmond Freeman (Filby) following the murder of two police officers in Porepunkah in August 2025.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart were part of a group of police who attended a Rayner Track property on Tuesday, 26 August.

The officers were executing a search warrant as part of an investigation by the Wangaratta Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

They were confronted by Freeman at his property about 10.30am, resulting in the two officers being fatally shot.

A third officer was seriously injured after being shot in the lower body and is now recovering at home.

The investigation into the deaths of the two officers and the serious injuries to a third officer is being conducted by the Homicide Squad.

As part of the effort to locate Freeman and bring him into custody peacefully and safely, police are offering a reward of up to $1M for information on his whereabouts that leads to his arrest.

This reward represents the largest ever offered in Victoria for an arrest.
Since 26 August, a significant search has been undertaken by Victoria Police in an effort to locate Freeman, otherwise known as Desmond Filby.

A number of heavily armed police officers from across a range of specialist areas within Victoria Police continue to undertake a significant search for Freeman, assisted by personnel from a number of other agencies.

More than 450 police each day are dedicated to the search.

Freeman was last seen at his Porepunkah property on 26 August shortly after the fatal shooting.

At this time, police are unaware of Freeman’s current location and are appealing to members of the public who do have information about his whereabouts to come forward.

At this time, there is nothing to indicate that Freeman is being assisted by a specific person, however given the difficult terrain and the requirement for various supplies this remains a possibility.

Police are also open to the possibilities that he remains at large alone or is dead as a result of self-harm.

Freeman was last seen wearing dark green (khaki) tracksuit pants, dark green rain jacket, brown Blundstone boots and reading glasses.

Police believe Freeman remains armed and advise members of the public not to approach him.

Cops put $1MILLION bounty on Dezi Freeman's head as they admit they have no idea if the fugitive is dead or alive

The reward is the largest ever offered in Victoria, and comes as the search for Freeman involving 450 police officers and the Australian Defence Force enters its 12th day.

'At this time, police are unaware of Freeman's current location and are appealing to members of the public who do have information about his whereabouts to come forward,' Victoria Police said.

'Police are also open to the possibilities that he remains at large alone or is dead as a result of self-harm.'

"Our aim in offering this reward is that it will lead someone out there, who may not have been willing to come forward until this time, to contact police.

"There is no doubt that up to a million dollars is a life-changing amount of money for anyone and has the potential to completely change their circumstances."
Inspector Thomas said police believed the manhunt would only come to a resolution through the assistance of the public.
