Possible lead in Susan Powell case, 8-18-11

It's been a while now since I looked closely at the WA law, but generally, grandparents do not have any rights to their grandchildren. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will come along and explain it a bit better. But given the circumstances, surely those in power must be reconsidering the wisdom of the law.

In this case, it won't matter, if Josh is arrested.

It will then be a matter of three grandparents versus one grandparent:

On Josh's side:
His father, Steven Powell

Representing Susan's side:
Susan's mother
Susan's father
Josh's mother (divorced from Steve)

I have a theory:
When Josh was met at his home by reporter Jones (after the "camping"), he made up an off-the-cuff alibi AND THEN started thinking "whoops - that's too close to where I really dumped her".
So...after they took his minivan on the search warrant he used the rental car to move the body, and took it much further (over the state line).

The two places searched near Ely, are both on US-50 - indicating that he came into Ely from the "pony express" area of Utah (Delta, Simpson Springs).

Hmmm..interesting theory laytonian.

Do we have any WS mapping whiz kids who can give those of us east coasters a perspective of the area and mileage involved? TIA, mapping is not my forte:innocent:

The area we are discussing may as well be on Mars in my world, lol! I have only traveled thru Nev. and UT and the terrain is rugged....very foreign to our defination of 'rugged terrain' here in the east.

"Putting this in my neighborhood is not appropriate," Josh added. "They're trying to push an agenda. ... I don't know what happened to her. There are 1,000 different theories that people need to consider in strong and serious ways."

If Josh really believes that there are 1,000 theories to explore-- why is he so convinced she ran off with another man? Where is his evidence to support that theory? Why has he been refusing to help solve the mystery? If one of his other theories is that she was taken against her will by another person - why wouldn't he want to help the police to solve this? Josh, want your vindication --help the police resolve the case!

Josh is a sorry excuse of a man, hiding in his daddy's home. Is he afraid that he is too stupid to talk without implicating himself?

Josh did offer up "look in houses and apartments" (it's ELY, you fool!)

But it's daddy offering up the theory, and I see that now that I've taken my Koecher timeline private**, Steven Powell has made up his own "laytonian timeline".

**Out of respect for the Koecher family.
It seems that in their case, enhanced publicity has brought much pain

The first time he went out it was after midnight (Monday morning) -if he unloaded the body he probably had to unload the body in the dark before the children woke up. But he didn't return to the house until about (5 pm?) if my memory is right. The police took his van, and the next day while they are processing his van, he gets a ride to a small airport (not the international one) to rent a car (why the airport - who knows?), he left his children with his sister to babysit while he drove around for several hundred miles. If he moved the body, it would have been done in broad daylight.

I wonder if he made any calls to anyone else who may have been willing to help him? I don't know if carrying a dead body in a rental car would be a good idea - odor? leakage? And he has to return it relatively fast and the rental people would notice.

What if he went out to meet someone, who had a better vehicle to move the body - but also could mean it was further away then where Josh had traveled to.

As a resident, I'm familiar with the most common route one would take to get to those areas. (Beware anyone who shows you a map that routes through Dugway, because that's a restricted-area Army base):

Click HERE to view my scenario map.

A = Powell home on Sarah Circle, West Valley City, Utah
O = Tooele viapoint (most likely; he could also have gone south on I-15 to Lehi, west)
B = Simpson Springs area, indicated by Josh as his "camping/fire" area
C = Delta, Utah (viapoint)
D = Ward, NV (old mine area, searched Saturday)
E = General area of Friday search of 12 mines, west of Ely on US-50

Your eastern areas are much easier to map (I've done it many times in my travels)...'cos there's addresses to go by. Here...it's general areas.

compare the concern of the man who was dating (but not living with) the missing woman in Aruba. As far as everyone can tell, she went willingly with another man. Her boyfriend was not married to her, didn't have any children with her - and yet he is more concern about his missing girlfriend (despite knowing that she went away with this man willingly).

Josh claims that they had a good marriage. He has no knowledge that she ever had an affair. Yet he is at peace with himself, believing that his wife and mother of their children impulsively ran off with a man and has never looked back at any of her other relationships - spouse, children, family, friends, co-workers...

Oh my. I never thought I would despise someone as much as Casey Anthony.

I'm not aware of a rental car agency at Airport #2, although it's closer to their home than SLC Intl. There are rental agencies located all over town, though. BUT the neighbor said he specifically took him to "the airport". Can you point me to a link where it says it wasn't the main airport? (It's a detail that would be very helpful.)

If you've moving a body into a mineshaft, daylight is best. There's not a lot of traffic out in those areas.
If he needed a better vehicle, wouldn't he rent one?

I don't think the body, if in a mineshaft, is far off a road.

Helper, helper. Neighbor, friend?

Powell rented a car at the Salt Lake Airport for the day, according to ABC News. West Valley Police Captain Tom McLachlan said “We do know a car was rented in his name and several hundred miles were put on it. Unfortunately, we don’t have any GPS data. The company that rented the car doesn’t store that data.”

I can't find the original article, but I believe it was the brother-in-law, Graves who drove Josh to the airport for the rental. Then the neighbor Peterson drove him to drop off the rental and to pick up the van from the police station if I am remembering correctly.

Two days after Susan was reported missing, police confiscated the family’s van to search for evidence. During this time, police say Joshua went to the Salt Lake Airport and rented a car – a move that caught them by surprise.
"We were unaware that he had gotten a rental car and was on the move," West Valley City Police Captain Tom McLachlan said in an interview with wjbf.com.

I didn't realize that the police did not confiscate the minivan immediately upon his return home.

They did not have the GPS data from the rental, but they did have the mileage. So having the number of miles he traveled would give them the ability to map out his various possible destinations.
I bet that Ely fit that scenario perfectly.

The thanks button is not enough to show my gratitude! Thanks for giving me the visual perspective of your scenario route. I am a visual person, lol!

When we traveled thru in '08 I remember how rugged and desolate the terrain is out west. It is more difficult for me to get my bearings in this part of the USA which is foreign to me!

BBM, seriously, I always wonder how parents can be so blind to things. I know if I was in JP shoes, my fathers house is the last place I would show my face! He would have more questions than ANY detective if I had lost my partner and wasn't searching night and day for them.

I could be way off, but I was thinking along the lines of someone coming from a different area like North or West and meeting up with Josh to locate where the body was, and then "helper" could move it to another location.

I just think a rental car business would really remember if the car came back smelly or soiled beyond normal use.

thank you so much for this post, this is exactly what i was asking about yesterday. Did they do this yet? I was wondering what if any mines fell within that radius. And so far have the police followed up with a report about the searches or is that it and we are left to wonder? Humm very unusual..

I'm thinking he probably didn't move the body in the rental car, but if he did have OCD traits, like his neighbor alluded to about Josh having a fit about dirt on the carpet - then he may have returned to the scene of where she was left to ensure that it was okay.

I wouldn't be surprise if he has been back to the area on vacation - just to make sure it looks right, kinda the way some people check on if they remember to turn off the stove.

Can someone explain to me the events of the last few days? I am still at a complete lost as to why the media was allowed to come along on this "search".

you know what is bothering me? The rental car or van, I think JP did that to throw of investigators. I think he went the opposite direction. I know he isn't the brightest bulb but you would have to be mental challenged to make that much of a blunder. I don't know with his cocky smile on the interview it just struck me that he knew they were not going to find anything there.

The only thing I can think of as to why he would do something like that is if remembered he left something critical there and he had to take that risk. Could it be to remove her wedding ring? Is that worth risking doing that?

I wonder where his father was during that time?

Any helper would have to be a pretty darn close friend. How many friends do any of us have that would help us to hide a dead body? I guess my DH would if I had a good enough excuse, like self defense. I think that's it.
