Possible lead in Susan Powell case, 8-18-11

To me, if a subject is still talking, a journalist should let them talk, just like the police do...sit back and listen, you never know what you will hear...and it is not as though "journalists" of late come up with such stellar questions that they should be cutting off the subject, IMO...
(Jane Velez Mitchell and Nancy Grace are famous for not letting people finish a sentence, but I hesitate to use the word "journalist" in the same paragraph as either of them.)

It sounds to me like the searches of the Ely mines would be physically risky.I don't think they would be used as part of a ploy. JMO

I agree, and I stumbled upon this randomly, and not sure if its been posted again, but it was from an old thread, talking about JP saying he would use a mine to hide a body...or something to that affect, however, I do not see the actual video any longer.

From the old thread...(and SIA if this is not allowed for any reason)

Video - Josh Powell was obsessed with crime shows and tells friend a mine shaft is the best place to hide a body

Josh Powell's friend reports, via telephone, Josh said the following during a 2008 Christmas party: "Basically it would be deep and it would go straight down and for someone to find something down that would be literally impossible. I couldn't believe I was having this discussion with him about this type of thing and I just couldn't believe it."

I'm sure it's been said many times but this guy systematically thinks his answers out to disprove each point proven. Sociopath...jmo you always feel that oddness about his answers.

eta, an example

“You don’t go camping in the desert in the summer,” Powell said. “You go in the cold.”

I totally agree. He seems to think he is outsmarting everyone and it appears to me he is gloating over his superior intelligence. He wants his answers to be odd imo, like a puzzle that only he can put together.

Exactly what I thought. The "hamburger" comment too, which sounded to me to be a bit, I don't know, threatening? Why would you put out a veiled threat to your missing wife? So she'll come home? That statement really creeped me out. Actually, it physically made my stomach lurch.

He thinks he can outsmart the cops. He wants total control over the FBI interview. He thinks he is important enough to have that control. Susan's friends also have stated that he was very controlling of her. Classic, CLASSIC sociopath thinking and behavior. And just the fact that he really thought he could get away with his ridiculous camping alibi shows how cocky and really un-self aware he really is (I think he'd be pissed to hear how textbook I think he is). I say, let him continue to think he's smarter than everyone else - they all eventually get taken down by their missteps due to overconfidence. His words and actions as indicative of his personality for me are more evidence than any tangible physical evidence.

And the defaming of his wife by publishing her schoolgirl journals? who DOES that? and what does he hope to gain from it?

I believe if he keeps talking and he will, he'll give more away than he intends. He will want LE to know how smart he is and in time he will slip up! Wish we had someone on here who could watch his interviews and give us some feedback on his body language.

Just my op but he's worried. I like that. xoxo

To me his dad seems more worried than the son does.

hi Girly ! I started following the case early on and then the Casey Anthony case got ahold of me which i regret now and so i lost touch. Also I cant help but notice how little info there is on the Powell case and how much overkill of info there is on the Cassey case. Doesnt seem right to me either as that Powell case should be plastered all over the tube like the Anthony case and maybe that would help bring thing to a head. I hope that Josh is questioned every day of his life. I asked just now and I would like to know if you found any info about his car rental? Did he give an answer for why he did that>?

I remember JP making statements about how he had to go shopping because he had to replace items LE took in the search. Bedspred, phone, etc. But, I can't remember if that would have been in his car or the rental.

Today we are doing a honk-and-wave campaign," said Susan's friend Kiirsi Hellewell. "We constantly try to do whatever we can every day to try and find her."
The timing of this campaign was scheduled months ago and the schedule of the Ely search was totally coincidental.
"We had this planned before the Nevada news broke and we had no idea that was going to happen," said Hellewell.
But the new investigation this weekend is stirring up a lot of emotions for friends who just want some closure.
"I saw an interview last night with Josh where he said if you ask anybody who knows me they'll tell you I am not a violent person and I could never hurt Susan--I don't think he's asked anybody here in Utah or people who've known him a long time in Washington because he does have violent tendecies and there are alot of witnesses who are close friends of Susan and Josh's who will tell you some pretty bad fights," said Hellewell.

I have to comment on this. While I wouldn't wish JP to be married to my enemy, this is the first time I have heard about JP being really violent. If anyone can show me where this was stated by anyone in her family...or her friends since 12/7/09, please link...and I'm sure it would have been plastered all over the media, if it had been. TIA

Doesn't it get chilly in the desert overnight during the summer? I am thinking about the boy scout who recently got lost in the desert and covered himself with dirt to stay warm. I can't remember if it was in Utah.

Josh statement that winter is the time to camp in the desert doesn't make sense to me.

OT my internet is moving sloooooowwww today!

Did Josh ever give an excuse for why he rented a car and drove wherever? I cant find anything about if he was questioned about that or any statements? Anyone know?

He did talk to LE twice I believe before hiring an attorney the following Monday and skipping the next interview. He also gave a DNA sample.

Oh brother...

When asked Saturday how someone might find his wife, Powell answered: “Beauty supplies. Get serious about beauty supplies.”
Susan Powell enjoyed cosmetology, liked to help people style their hair and bought lots of beauty supplies, Powell said. He suggested federal agents post his wife’s picture in beauty supply stores across the country.

........................... He really sounds as though he resented her a lot, he thinks he is saying nice things about her, but the undertone of how he belittles her comes through. She likes to help people (by styling their hair), but doesn't mind hurting people like her sons, family and friends by leaving without any explanation. Also Steven Powell said something during the honk and wave confrontation about considering a "50 faces of Susan" on their website.

For about a decade Steve Powell told Julia that he had been in love with and obsessed with Susan.
“Susan was the focal point of the songs he wrote and that are posted on the Steve Chantrey website. Those are but a few of the many more songs written about Susan,” Julia said.
“He is pining for a love he never could have,” she said.
“Steve was very proud of his stash of 🤬🤬🤬🤬 magazines he kept in a locked cabinet in his bedroom. He showed them to me when he lived at his previous Puyallup home,” Julia said.
Last fall Julia said Steve boasted that he still had the pair of Susan’s very sacred Mormon Temple Garment underwear that he stole from the dirty laundry when she and Josh lived at his house at the beginning of their marriage.
“Not only did he stash her underwear in his locked bedroom cabinet, he said he stashed her pictures, journals, and 🤬🤬🤬🤬 in there too,” Julia said.

Josh's sister, Jennifer Graves, was not only Susan's sister-in-law, she was her very close friend. Jennifer said Sunday, "While in WA early in their marriage, Susan had a disturbing encounter that she related to me later. She was in the car with my dad. Josh was not in the car. While they were alone, my dad proposed to Susan that he and Josh ‘share’ her. Susan was very upset and called and told me about it. It was soon after that that they moved to Utah."
Susan told close friends of her concerns about her father-in-law. “Susan talked to me on many occasions about her father-in-law, Steve Powell,” her best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell said Sunday. “She confided in me that she could not stand Steve.
“She told me that when she and Josh were newlyweds and living in Steve Powell’s home to save some money, she caught Steve trying to watch her get dressed one day. She also said that other things happened but one day Steve Powell tried to kiss her.”
“She told me that one big reason she and Josh moved to Utah was to put as many miles between her and Steve Powell as possible.

......................sheds new light behind Steven Powell's comments about Susan's sexual behavior, sort of like men who sexually assault women and call their victims 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 or 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

sunny, thanks, tho I was referring to older posts. This was the first I've heard of his bad violence, iirc. Kiirsi makes it sound like it was well known....by many....and it just surprised me because I would think she would have brought that forward..as well as others much earlier. I'm asking anyone who knows of a link from the beginning of the case stating this to please let me know. Like I said, that info itself would have been all the news and we would have discussed it in length...which I don't recall happening.

ETA: The mental and emotional abuse, yes; along with the controlling behavior.
