I wouldn't be impressed either. I'm sure special considerations have been put in place. Then this last minute! And now I "might" come. Lordy! Make up your mind dude.

I am a feminist. It would seem apt that nobody "gave me away," but it wasn't. It happened that way against my wishes. It was, for me, not about being "given away," but about a parent walking with me, being there for me. It may be based in an archaic notion, just like taking a man's last name was about ownership, but that doesn't mean that the meaning hasn't changed or is different for some. (Personally, i kept my name.) Thankfully, in feminism, we understand it's about individual choices and that we are all welcome to create our own meanings out of things and form our own traditions.

I am not understanding this wedding thing.

What is this father giving the daughter away all about? Seriously. Time to get rid of that crazy notion now,

I was married in 1973 and did not have that. What an archaic idea. The father owns the daughter or what is the meaning of that?

I also hate the bridal veil. So much like the burqa to me

Time for women to do what they want and for other women not to shame them for it.
Time for women to say that they belong to no one. If it is about a strong bond, then a mother should do just as well or if none of those, a neighbor, etc.

Actually I have heard/read several reports over time the Queen has quite a sense of humor. That Phillip has the crusty edge.

I'm getting whiplash from the back-and-forth: He will. He won't. The focus should be on Meghan and Harry, not her father. Whether or not it's intentional, sadly, that's what's happening here.

Hm. I keep my opinion just like we women had in the 60’s that said we were no longer going to be second class citizens. Maybe someday it will happen.

To me who had nice parents and my kids who have fabulous in laws, I can say this drama is ludicrous. In this day when everyone knows everything instantly, the ugliness cannot be hidden.

Her father worked in Hollywood, home of all kinds of antics. He is no shrinking violet or he would have been replaced with hundreds of other people who wanted his job.

He is not a child who can keep changing his mind. He is a full grown adult.

What kind of disgusting is this? Playing games with photographers. Probably pretending to be sick. Yes, no, yes.

Does he have his plane tickets because a last minute will be pricey. Of course, Meghan will pay so it hardly matters.

Where was his suit made? Tried on? Arrangements to brought to the plane and picked up in London?

Practice time? Dinners or whatever other festivities?

For someone who is supposed to be so reclusive, he is quite the center of attention. Come on, get some dignity here.

Agree human.

The daughter who's been giving all the interviews said the other evening on tv news that her father was basically penniless and was waiting for a $$windfall to be sent so he could buy plane tickets. She mentioned how he drove
his old, beat up car up to Ca. and was waiting for the money. So maybe Meghan did call and offer him more $$.
I wonder if the royals especially Harry are second guessing this family. They should be, IMO.

Well I love it that the father gives away the bride. It has nothing to do with owning the daughter, never heard of that before. I also love a veil. To compare it to a burqa is ludicrous. I hope he comes.

How can he be penniless? He would get Social Security and wouldn’t he get a pension? How long did he work in Hollywood?

He got her into the movie industry. If it weren't for him she would not be where she is. I hope she offered him money.

There are plenty of Royal shenanigans including Harry’s own. Meghan seems to have a good head on her shoulders.

I am sure that he would have First Class tickets to London. She certainly can afford it. Harry might even kick in some. Why not? I am sure they would pay for a fabulous suit and shoes for him as well. Nice accommodations and someone to chauffer him around in London and nice meals would be provided as well.

That's how the tradition started. It was about transfer of ownership. Why do you think it's called giving away the bride?

Also, quit talking about the wedding to anyone but Meghan and a liaison from Kensington Palace. Don't talk to any media, any papparazi, or even his own children who have already proven that they can't be trusted to act mature in this matter.

Plane tickets, suit, a hotel, or even a room in a royal-owned house in the country, should have been organised by Kensington Palace. Meghan's family aren't millionaires like other royalty or even Kate's family. I think they should have had him over here by now, shut in a country house and not allowed out without a protection officer who could steer him clear of photographers. They should have taken away his phone and had all calls through the house circuit so that callers could be screened, and they should have banned him from talking about all these things happening!

I'm not even comfortable with Meghan's mum talking to Oprah, though I do think Oprah probably has a bit more nous for how to do things in a less trashy way.

Learning moment again as to British terms :giggle:
Nous-
BRITISHinformal
common sense; practical intelligence.
"if he had any nous at all, he'd sell the movie rights"

And no, I didn't make up that sentence! It was part of the Google search for the definition! Lol

I don't think they can do all those things to a private US citizen without his consent. He may not have agreed to any of that.

And the royal family are notoriously hostile to anyone giving interviews about them, trashy or not. The Queen Mother, along with the rest of the royals, famously disowned their faithful nanny who'd been with the family for generations and raised both the Queen and Princess Margaret because she gave a very harmless, non-controversial interview with a respectable newspaper. Their attitude hasn't changed any since, they like to be in control of their own press.

Look at the speed with which Diana was divorced after the Panorama interview. I think Megan's mother can expect a frosty reception.
