How do lie detecter tests work? Can you convince/delude yourself are innocent and pass a test?

For example if JMK was to take a test, given how deluded he is what would be the outcome.

Also, what was asked of Patsy and John when they took theirs and how long after the murder happened was it?

If you believe what you are saying, you can pass a lie detector test. i.e. if you believe you are Napolean, you can pass a lie detector test.

You can also be innocent, but harbor feelings of guilt, and fail the test.
