There is an interview today on Good Morning America with the Kaufman's.They are suing their sattellite phone carrier to repay the rescue and to buy a new boat.
I can't seem to get the article or link to post.

I'm sorry. I find them to be just horrible people. Ick. There is video of them on yahoo news. The way the wife rolls her eyes around in her head when the interviewer dares to ask why they brought two babies on the trip? Ick.

I'd love to slap the stupid right outta that one.
I'm a pacifist, but I think I could make an exception for her;)

Are we yesterday's news yet? Has society found something else to entertain themselves with?"

:waitasec: Maybe society would find something else to entertain themselves with if y'all would quit whoring yourselves out to national media outlets and making all your ridiculous antics public fodder. Deal?

Wonder how much they got paid for that interview?

It began with a fever, then a rash and then Lyra became lethargic. That was when the couple used their satellite cell phone to call a doctor. He advised them to begin treating Lyra with the antibiotics they had stored in the sailboat's well-stocked medical locker. When the antibiotics did not work, Eric Kaufman, an experienced sailor, called the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard told him to keep the satellite phone on and said they would consult with a pediatrician and call them back. The call never came.

Kaufman noticed the phone was showing a SIM card error. He tried everything to restart the phone. He soon realized they were "in a really dangerous spot." He said he had no choice but to activate the sailboat's emergency beacon. "We've left the land of this is an adventurous trip with the family, and we've gotten into this is life and death now," he said.

Within 12 hours, paramedics had been airlifted to a spot near the Rebel Heart.

It turned out all Lyra needed were more antibiotics.

idiots - then he goes on and blames the satellite service:

"I think a lot of people think we grabbed a six-pack of beer and hopped in a boat and headed to Tahiti, fates be damned, let’s do it, and that wasn't the case at all," said Eric Kaufman, who added that every safety measure was well thought-out. Everything but the satellite cell phone, which the Kaufman's say had been deactivated by their provider, Whenever Communications, LLC.

"I think the evidence clearly represents that they did what they did and that was the action that ultimately started a chain of events," said Eric Kaufman. His wife added that the satellite cell phone company's recklessness led to the family losing their home.

Deactivated AFTER he called a doctor, the the coast guard?? Maybe he used up his minutes...

Oy, there were on ABC news tonight (don't know if it was a repeat from GMA this morning).

They plan to do this again with the children!! They should be stopped. Let them go, but they should not be allowed to AGAIN endanger those children. They're lucky the little one is still alive. Such stupid and selfish people. They haven't learned from their close call.

boodles, are you serious? Certainly some one interested in the children's welfare can intervene! this couple is bs crazy.

Here's the long version of the video. No one ever says why their satellite phone was deactivated. Regardless of the phone working or not, they still don't get it. smh

The satellite provider shut their phone off for "billing issues", AFTER they made 2 phone calls - one to a doctor, the other to the Coast Guard.

I posted that above with a link.

Here's my question: are they suggesting that the satellite provider shut their phone off INTENTIONALLY after their two calls? Or are they saying that, even if it was shut off for billing reasons, that the company should have left it turned on because it was emergency calls?

I'm sorry if I sound cold, but...they didn't pay their bill (suggested possibility), and they're getting on the phone company? Please explain to me how there is sunny negligence there on the part of satellite company.

I like how he threw in the statement about the government bring reimbursed (when they sue satellite company). Pretty sure they can't sue on behalf of the govt and I don't picture the govt joining into their suit!

Here's some blog posts that Eric made, showing that his boat wasn't in perfect condition...which is why he CHOSE to sink it, instead of sail it back. Here's one quoted post.

Eric/Rebel Heart:

The disadvantage is that the motion is brutal, especially when you do it day in and day out. Last night before sundown I visually checked the rig and saw three slide cars (slugs) had disconnected from the mainsail, on top of course. No big deal, I'll just drop her down (already double reefed), fix, and re-hoist. So now those big beefy eight foot waves with breaking crests we got to plow into for a few minutes in order to get the sail down and up.

Problem solved, sail rehoisted. Three hours later (midnight or so) I look up with a flashlight to admire my handywork and notice they are all popped off again. Cool.

The yankee (our outermost jib) has suffered a bit of damage from some flogging during sail changes but fortunately it seems to be limited to re-enforced areas. Three cheers for sailmakers and the smarts they employ of knowing where problems will develop in advance.

Why tip toe around the "billing issue"? They talk about everything else, so why be cryptic about it? EK said it happened to someone else, too (phone deactivated), implying it was a wider carrier issue.

Did they fail to pay the bill? Did they overrun their allowance? Did the phone company screw up somehow?

I suspect the K's are using the phone deactivation as another excuse for why nothing about this is their own responsibility. But if they're gonna throw stones and use the media to do so, they shouldn't be shying away from why they're blaming the phone company.

Regardless of the phone issue, it was still negligent and endangering for them to take a baby and a toddler on a lone trans-ocean sailing trip. IMO. Duh.

BBM- I'm afraid to say that I think they have actually been emboldened by it! This guy has a lot to prove to the world... apparently his wife does too.. never a good reason to do something- especially when you are obviously not well prepared. These two almost seem hell bent on cutting of their noses to spite their faces... that sort of thing. I won't even say what I think of the two of them, it's not nice- not nice, at all!

apparently eric is altering and deleting posts/comments from forums/blogs... it is being discussed in the CF i linked yesterday. does that not scream fraud? scam? liar? !!!

that forum also mentioned something about eric knowingly being sent a new SIM card for the phone but taking off to sea before it arrived... if that is the reason the phone stopped working then the fault lies solely on the kaufman's. also, eric posted somewhere that "sat phones are fluky" (don't work consistently)... so if he already knew that, he knew they could never be 100% reliable in an emergency situation.

these two are despicable!

I would imagine someone, somewhere has screenshots or copies of all of their blog posts.

Can he delete posts from the cruising and sailing forums he posted on where he admitted things and blasted others? Anyone know?
